Obituary: Martha (Eastman) Dwight-Covenant missionary to Taiwan, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to many-died in Turlock on , 19. Her life began in Bemidji, Minnesota on 30, 1923. Her parents, Peter and Marie Eastman, were immigrants from Sweden and Norway. Early in her life, her family settled in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Martha was the oldest child in a large and loving family with siblings Margaret, Richard, Alice, Robert, Carol, John, Elsie, and Donald. Life for them was enriched by the close Scandinavian community and especially by their deep involvement in Klamath Falls Covenant Church. Martha graduated with the class of 1941 at Klamath Union High School. high school, she worked as an administrative assistant for a building contractor involved in the American war effort. She impressed her employers with her competence and work ethic and was asked to move to offices in Portland, Salt Lake City, and Spokane. While in Portland, Martha attended First Covenant Church. At that church, while listening to the Reverend Edwin Hallstein challenge to consider Gods call to missionary work, Martha said, I will go. This led to her enrollment at North Park Junior and Bible Institute. At first, she prepared to go to Congo, but in 1945 she met and fell in love with Norman Dwight, who was just returning from World War II. He had been a missionary kid in China. and together they decided to look toward Asia. Martha married Norman in 1947. , along with three small sons, left for Taiwan at the end of 1954. Upon arriving, she set about learning Mandarin and reaching out to people. She built friendships with refugees from China as well as Taiwanese. She had the gift of preaching, though she might call it talking, which she often used at speaking engagements. She also ministered by caring for her family, which eventually grew to six boys, and by serving the foreign community of Taiwan. She had a knack for planning menus, shopping, and cooking for camps and conferences. Martha retired from ministry in Taiwan in 1991, but continued to serve God through her involvement in her home church, Hilmar Covenant, and by extending friendship to people in Turlock. She was a resident of Covenant Village where she used her gifts to encourage and inspire. Norman died in 2011. In her final years, Martha appreciated so much the compassionate and professional care she received from nurses, CNAs, and staff at Covenant Village . became part of her extended family. Marthas six sons (David, Steven, Philip, Donald, Paul, and Timothy), her daughter-in-laws, siblings, 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends will remember her funny, poignant stories, her joy, her kindness, her generosity, and especially her vibrant faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
