Obituary: Doris Horrell Tant, 87, devoted wife, beloved mother and treasured grandmother, died , 21, 2015.Doris was a born in Rooks, North Carolina in 1928 to her much loved mother, Josephine Rilee Horrell and her father William Edison Horrell. She was one of eight children born to Josephine and Willie, and her fondest memories were of her shared experiences with her brothers and sisters. She married Jerry Tant in 1946 and they were married for 57 years before he preceded her in 2004.A child of the Great Depression, she worked hard her entire life, first in the fields of North Carolina picking berries and tobacco to put food on the family table, and then as a young adult in banking and later with Atlantic Coastline Railroad (later Seaboard Coastline Railroad and CSX). She transferred with the railroad from North Carolina to Jacksonville in1960 and retired in 1987.She lived in Jacksonville for 37 years and was the backbone of her church, Neptune Baptist Church in Neptune Beach, Florida. Jerry and Doris moved to Tallahassee in 1997 to become full time grandparents. Doris was a woman of immense love and great faith. The bedrock of her life was her desire to live as Jesus would: serving others, loving others and doing unto others as her faith prescribed.She lived her Christianity quietly and with intention in every word and deed. She spent countless hours visiting shut-ins, feeding homeless and hungry people, providing company and conversation to nursing home patients, doing weekly grocery shopping for her daughters' elderly piano teacher, even as she faithfully continued her biblical study and church activities. She loved her family beyond measure and was present in every endeavor of her children from their births to her death. She was a home-room mom, school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, girl-scout leader, church activity parent and chaperone for every activity from pre-school to high school.She planned loving, fun birthday parties and was the wheels for every gathering of friends. She was determined that her girls would get a college education and worked hard to ensure that they would, assuring them that they "could do whatever they set their minds to" and they'd better get to it since they would not have an inheritance.She remained the center of her family even as her girls went on to have their own lives and families, riding shot-gun on their every life event good and bad, being present with love and prayer, a shoulder to rest upon, a gentle squeeze of the hand, or a tough love chin up reminder. Doris became a grandmother in 1998 and was named "Gaga" by her grands thus becoming the original Lady Gaga to the Tant/Richard clan.She delighted in her grandchildren and was a part of their life every single day, relishing each development and cherishing every moment, covering them with kisses and adoration from their births until her death. She lived with her grandchildren for the last 10 years of her life providing them (along with their mother) an enduring loving presence, companionship, kindness, wisdom and humor.She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughters Allison Tant Richard and Leanne Tant Beckwith. She will be dearly remembered by Allison and her husband, Barry Richard, Leanne and her husband, Henry Beckwith, and her grandchildren Jonathan, Jeremy, Danielle, Todd, Brooke and her husband Dave, and her great granddaughter Sophie.Doris is also survived by nieces and nephews who were central to her life as she was the last of her siblings to have children, so she became a substitute mom and world's best Aunt. She is preceded by siblings Marie Smith, Lois Woodcock, Muriel Williamson, Josephine Russ, John Horrell, Barry Horrell, Stanley Horrell and Ralph Harrison as well as infant daughter Doris Geraldine along with her parents and husband. The family will receive visitors on , 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Culleys 1737 Riggins Road. A service of thanksgiving for the life of Doris Horrell Tant will be held on , 26 at 11 a.m. also at Culleys at 1737 Riggins Road.In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to KEYS (Keys to Exceptional Youth Success) in care of the Foundation for Leon Schools, 725 South Calhoun Street, Tallahassee, Florida 32301.
