Obituary: Dr. Gary John Channer, D.D.S. passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his wife, Patti on May 17, 2013. Gary, the middle child of Alverna and Charles Channer, was born on 23, 1947 in Rockville Centre, New York. receiving his DDS degree from SUNY at Buffalo, he went on to specialize in Pediatric Dentistry at the Buffalo Children's Hospital. Upon completing his residency in 1975, Gary and Patti moved to California where he was a LCDR in the Navy serving as the Pediatric Dentist for the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base. In 1977, Gary and Patti moved to Ventura where he associated with Dr. David Ashrow, the first Pediatric Dentist in Ventura. Dr. Ashrow retired, Gary opened his new office on Victoria Avenue. a wonderful 27 years, he retired in 2004 leaving bright smiles from patients and staff who still love him. Gary and Patti were married for 41 years and although they were never blessed with children they were a loving aunt and uncle, godmother and godfather to many. "Gary the Golfing Gardner" truly loved the life he created. An active member of the Pierpont Racquet Club since 1977 and an avid student of Tai Chi, he was a fixture at Saticoy Country Club and could also be found tending his rose garden and his Audi S5 which he called his ultimate toy. Shortly after his retirement, he became a volunteer with the LMVNA Hospice of Ventura where he brought happiness and compassion to all those he cared for. An avid supporter of the Arts and everything Ventura, one would often hear him say that "the people are the soul of the City". His wife, and life partner, Patti will forever carry his heart in hers. He also leaves behind his brother Wayne Channer (Alison) from Manhattan, NY and their children Grace and Ian; his sister Kathi Filonuk (Rich) from Greenlawn, NY and their children Richard and Leah; niece Jennifer Channer (Giancarlo) from Huntington, NY and their children Gabriella, Anna and Cristian esi; as well as all the members of Pattis family who loved him as their own. Gary's passing has awakened a community as stated so beautifully by a dear friend: "Let us all continue to rejoice in the privilege of knowing this amazing man and wrap our hearts around the ray of light that has always been Gary, the brightness of his smile and the gift of his friendship. The sun will not shine as brightly when Gary is no longer with us". Patti would like everyone who cared for Gary to know how grateful she is for the love, attention and compassion shown to her "wonderful guy". The outstanding staff at both the UCLA Medical Neuro-Trauma Unit and the Ojai Valley Community Memorial Hospital, along with all the Angels of their community of friends both here and afar. We honor you for your support and the love that carried us through and continues to nourish. A Celebration of Life will take place on 27, 2013, 5:00pm - 8:13pm (sunset) at Saticoy Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring the life of Gary may be made to the Hospice Program/LMVNA, 1996 Eastman Avenue, Suite 101, Ventura, CA 93003 and the Ventura Botanical Gardens for the Dr. Gary Channer Memorial Fund, PO Box 3127 Ventura, CA 93006 to establish a place in the garden to rest and remember Gary. are under the direction of the Ted Mayr , 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura |
