Obituary: It is with great sadness that the children of Clarence Ole Munch, Sr. (Chet) announce the passing of their beloved father on May 22, 2017. Chet was born in Claremore, Oklahoma on 3, 1930. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy of 46 years and is survived by his four children, Sandra Munch, Jim Munch, Megan (Munch) Nelligan and Clarence Ole Munch, Jr. (Chet). He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Chet served his country during World War II and the Korean War. He was a very active member in his Veteran’s group. Chet was proud to be a Veteran and made a great effort to speak to every Veteran he came across. Chet also enjoyed rodeos and anything related to the old west. Anyone who knew him knew about his great sense of humor and liked nothing better than to hear a joke, play a joke or be part of one. However, his family was his pride and joy and very much loved by him. He will be missed by all of his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send a donation to any reputable Veteran association or your favorite charity. The family thanks you for your love and prayers at this difficult time. |

Obituary: Joan Christine Schwochert De Munbrun Can you imagine? In her 101-year lifespan, Joan De Munbrun was a beautician, photographer, soldier, accountant, artist, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In her later years she was widely admired for her strength, longevity, commitment to service, and her indomitable spirit. Whenever she would tell the tales of her life, she would often punctuate her story with the words, Can you imagine? It was an expression of wonder and amazement at everything she had seen, good and bad, over her long life. As one of the first women to enlist in the Womens Army Corps, Joan was a pioneer, serving proudly from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. A devout Catholic and passionate patriot, Joans life-long devotion to God and Country found its greatest expression in her 67 years of service with the American Legion. For more than 45 years she was a delegate to their state conventions, and in 2002-2003, when she was a mere 90 years old, Joan was named California Legionnaire of the Year. (Can you imagine?) She came into the world Joan Christine Schwochert on 15, 1913, the fourth of seven children born to John Emil Schwochert and Martha Sluszewski. She began life out on the midwestern prairie near Ross, North Dakota, where her parents were scratching out a living on their homestead farm 14 rough miles from the nearest town. There she learned the frugality, practicality and quiet independence that would characterize much of her life. One of her most treasured photographs was one she called A Man and the Land, taken of her father standing straight, stern and alone in a potato field, the dirt furrows trailing off to the horizon behind him. Joans life was nearly cut short at the age of three when she developed a high fever. Her mother packed her in ice and her father rushed her to town in a horse-drawn wagon. (Can you imagine?) She was diagnosed with a ruptured appendix and given little chance to survive but, responding to her fathers pleas, the doctor drained the infection and she was put in the care of a local nurse, who brought her back from the brink over the course of three months. A few years later, after the family had moved to a log cabin in the woods of northern Minnesota, tragedy struck. Joan was only 10 years old when her mother passed away and she was sent to live with relatives in Wisconsin. At 15, she saved her money from a job at a summer resort and hitch-hiked to Minneapolis to go to beauty school, eventually opening her own beauty studio. From her wealthy, society clients, she learned about the glittering world beyond the hardships of the rural life she had known. All that changed in 1941 with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Her customers husbands and boyfriends were all signing up and she grew restless on the sidelines. In 1942 she closed her shop and was one of the first 125 women to be inducted into the newly formed Womens Army Auxiliary Corps. (Can you imagine?) basic training in Iowa, she was sent to a flight school in Eagle Pass, Texas, where she was taught photography, a skill that became a lifelong passion. She photographed the young soldiers as they entered the school, and whenever one of them died in a crash during training, it was her sad duty to develop those photos and send them to family members. (Can you imagine?) Later she taught the operation and maintenance of aerial cameras in Denver, Colorado. Sergeant Joan Schwochert was honorably discharged on Thanksgiving Day 1945 and headed back to Minneapolis where, after only six weeks in the bitter cold of another midwestern winter, she opted to head for Los Angeles and use the GI Bill to enter a two-year course at the Fred C. Archer School of Photography. Her love for photography never abated. Even well into her nineties she loved to teach classes in What the Camera Sees. graduation, Joan accepted a position as the first staff photographer for Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. It was there she met Roland De Munbrun, a student who would soon become her husband. In 1948 they had a son, and named him Ron. When Ron was only about nine months old, the trio moved to Palo Alto, California where Joans husband continued his studies. Sadly, the couple parted ways only about a year later, and Joan moved with her son to Los Angeles, where she took a job as an accountant for a world-wide construction firm, the Ralph M. Parsons . Initially they stayed with a dear friend, an army nurse from World War I named Jennifer Tetraula. But it wasn easy being a single mother, especially during the 1950s, when attitudes were more judgmental and few support services existed. On top of that, she was earning only a fraction of the salary her male colleagues enjoyed. But she persevered, and in time they had an apartment in Glendale. There she became friends with a widely-known and respected painter named Joseph Frey. On weekends Joan and Ron would often join Frey and his wife in Palm Springs, where the prominent artist would paint and Joan would take pictures. (Can you imagine?) In time Joan took up painting herself, beginning another life-long hobby. When she retired from Parsons after 25 years, she happily pursued that hobby with artist communities in Morro Bay and later Hemet, all the while participating in service activities with her church and the American Legion. Meanwhile, her son Ron served in Vietnam, returned to attend college in Los Angeles, and then moved back east to begin a very successful career in federal government service, which continues today. Joan was justifiably proud of Rons accomplishments and of his fine family, which includes his wife, Lee, two daughters and continued... |
