Obituary: Jean Roberta (Berry) McClelland died peacefully in her daughter and son-in-laws home (in Cocoa, FL) on 23, 2017 at the age of 94. Born on 31, 1923 in Barnesville, Ohio to Lewis Everett and Ruth Alpha (Outland) Berry, Jeans name came about (as she would tell it) ecause I was supposed to be a boy named John Robert, so Jean Roberta it became. Three generations lived under one roof and she enjoyed baking, sewing, crocheting, and making paper dolls with her Grandmother Adda, and dancing during Christmas celebrations. Sitting upon her fathers lap she enjoyed him telling stories, and she marveled at her mother having gone to Business School. Her brother Everett allowed her into his Boys Only Club; and as the only girl member - and for her wit, humor, and laugh - she came to be known as Laughing Water. Delighting in her mother telling tales about an ancestor from the Revolutionary War, General Anthony Wayne; also known as Mad-Anthony for his daring assaults, she also enjoyed her parents sharing details of the family originating from Great Britain and how they came to America to escape religious persecution and poverty; and later in life, Jean traced her familys roots back to 1787! As a baby Jean met Bette, who became a lifelong best friend, and they found it a privilege to spend time together. One of their favorite haunts was down by the railroad station where they would collect old glass to gift to their mothers. Through their schoolgirl years they learned to play the clarinet and enjoyed travelling for games and festivals. The two remained best friends throughout all of their days. Growing up in the Methodist Church, evenings was devoted to youth activities. She particularly loved the summers spent at Robinsons Cottage where she attended special classes to strengthen her faith. Jean was quick to share the most important lesson her momma ever taught her. Love is nurturing. Having lost her mother, Jeans father married Gladys Crow in 1953. Gladys was a Economics teacher, who was remembered fondly as a wonderful women who was a friend, and a mother. Upon marrying Rex (Griffith), whom she grew up with, they had their first daughter - Margaret - in 1943, and soon after they moved to Milan, Michigan, and gave birth to their daughter Jane in 1947. having worked in the Ypsilanti State Hospital Laundry Room, it became apparent she had a gift at connecting others and was quickly promoted to Communications Director; she retired after 15 years of service. In 1963 Rexs job transferred him to Jacksonville and the family relocated to Florida. In 1967 Jean moved to Clearwater, to be closer to her parents. In 1973, at an Oceanside bar, she met a gentleman named Jim who told her she has pretty legs, and soon after she became Mrs. James McClelland. Over the next 20 years they enjoyed travels to Mexico, Wyoming, Nevada, and more, as well as boating and fishing upon the Gulf of Mexico, and playing golf regularly. In the 1980s they purchased a timeshare in Sky Valley, and it quickly became their most treasured vacation spot; she often said, I love it with a passion! Upon her marriage she became a mother to Judy and Jimmy and always enjoyed visiting them at their homes in Colorado and Alaska. A life-long believer in educating ones self, Jean took classes in American Sign Language, Spanish, and on how to play the organ, all the while continuing to treasure everything in print, and staying sharp by completing many puzzles. Not always a fan of the fast-pace differences the world came to be, she remained astonished that she traveled to Europe, Egypt, and Israel - which she would describe as magnificently interesting. In 1991, at her 50 Year High School Reunion, she re-met a childhood classmate - Don Helms. became fast friends and fell in love. Over the past 26 years they traveled to one anothers homes (she in Florida, he in Arizona), spent countless hours on the telephone, mailed letters, and cherished their love of faith, family, adventure, and one another. Jean is survived by 2 daughters, Jane (Garland) and Margaret, step-daughter Judy, 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren, all whom she would constantly encourage, love unconditionally, and pray for each to ealize their full potential. She is preceded in death by her parents Lewis and Ruth, step-mother Gladys, sisters Marian and Edith, brother Everett, husband Jim, and step-son Jimmy. Jean sought for each who came after her to understand that, we are all children of God and within each of us is a divine presence, whether we know it or not. The family would like to express their thanks to Vitas for their care and compassion. There will be a Celebration of Jean's life on , 5, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Brevard Memorial in Cocoa.
