Obituary: Alma (Westphal) MachnicBeloved wife of the late George Machnic, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, passed away peacefully into the presence of our Lord on , 6, 2016. She was born on 13, 1923, in North Tonawanda, NY to former Tonawanda City Alderman, the late Albert Westphal and Emma (Lobien). She had one sister, Gladys (Westphal) Ferris (deceased). was a member of the Tonawanda High School Class of 1941, and a lifelong member of Salem United Church of Christ, where she was baptized and confirmed. Growing up, she worked on her father’s campaigns, enjoyed ice skating at Ives Pond, and played high school basketball. She attended Buffalo General Hospital School of , graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1944. Friends she made during nursing school remained with her for life - yearly updates from ‘the kids from training’ were cherished. later met and married the late George Machnic in 1948. He would be her devoted companion for nearly 50 years until his death in 1997. Together, they would build and operate Machnic’s Food Store from 1952 until 1986. Their store is still remembered by many Tonanwandans as a required stopover on the way to or from Kohler Pool and the many schools in the area. sending her youngest to kindergarten, returned to her early passion for nursing. As a dedicated nurse at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, she spent over 25 years caring for patients on the post-surgery recovery floor, “3 East.” Yet ’s greatest pride and joy always remained her children, John (Jan Carlyle), Richard and Michael (Stuart Keeler), her 2 Grandsons; Evan (Tiffany Broadwater) and Ethan (Erica Seery, Fiancé); and her 3 beautiful great grandchildren; Payton, Camden and Evie, whom she adored deeply. Through the large celebrations they loved to create, and George were touchstones for their family and community. Family reunions, weddings, anniversaries and graduations were cause to gather relatives, friends, and neighbors to share in the day’s long preparation leading up to the traditional chowder party, served from the wood-stoked 30 gallon cast iron kettle in the backyard. Likewise, many in the community enjoyed the Machnic ‘Cottage’ as their home base for the annual Tonawandas’ Day outing to Crystal Beach. The family cottage was the idyllic setting for many cherished memories and the best summer home for retirement. Retirement winters were eventually spent in Winter Springs, Florida, where finally moved in 1999, but her heart never left Tonawanda nor her Crystal Beach cottage. In Florida, enjoyed her new friends at SALT, the Seniors’ Group at Willow Creek Church. kept busy with ‘The Seniors’, her twice-weekly exercise at the YMCA and staying in touch with friends in Tonawanda. She loved her ‘projects’; whether needlepoint, embroidery, crochet, or painting, she was always finishing up the next gift for a friend or grandchild. In addition to ’s immediate family, she is also survived by several close cousins, nieces and nephews. will be missed for the many gifts she created, her sense of fairness and always seeking to do the right thing. We have been blessed by her beautiful spirit, the love she so freely gave, and the example she set through her energy and grace in answer to the process of life – in her words, “I’m just gonna keep moving.” A visitation with the family will be held for relatives and friends on ( 22) from 4-7 PM at JOHN O. ROTH FUNERAL HOME INC., 25 William Street (between Morgan and Broad Streets) Tonawanda, NY. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on ( 23rd) at 11AM, to be held at SALEM UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 114 Morgan Street (corner of Main and Morgan Streets) Tonawanda, NY. Immediately following the church celebration of ’s life, all are welcome to join ’s family for the graveside service at ELMLAWN MEMORIAL PARK, 3939 Delaware Avenue, Kenmore, NY, where will be laid to rest between her husband, George, and her mother, Emma.
