Obituary: James Jim Roger Dutra Jim Roger Dutra passed away at Dominican Hospital on , 29, 2016. He was 69. Jim was born in Watsonville, California on 23, 1946. He was raised on the family farm by pioneer farming parents of Portuguese decent. Jim was multi-lingual, speaking English, Portuguese and Spanish. His parents, Manuel and Mamie Dutra, farmed on Carlton Road in Watsonville where Jim continued his parents legacy until the day the Lord called him home. Jim leaves behind his companion of 22 years, Susan Petersen McBride. He was blessed with two children and two grandchildren all who reside in Watsonville. Jim leaves behind his son, Jimmy Dutra, his daughter Lori Dutra, his son-in-law, Efrain Arellano and his grandsons, Carson James and Xander Cruz. Jim leaves a sister, Marilu (Dan) Phillips and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind three very loyal amigos, Randy, Chuy and Ramiro, that cared for both private and business affairs day in and day out for years on end. Jim was an avid collector since the age of five years old. He adored his family, exploring new places, traveling (fun fact: the only state in the U.S. Jim had not visited was South Dakota), cooking, and entertaining his friends. Jim was the kindest man with the gentlest heart and soul. Jim was a true country boy and called Watsonville home his entire life. He truly loved his hometown. Throughout Jims life he was a member and volunteer of many community organizations including: Santa Cruz Farm Bureau, Ag History Project, Santa Cruz Fair Heritage Foundation, Elks Lodge BPOE No 1300 (past Exalted Ruler), Knights of Columbus, Pajaro Valley Rod and Gun Club, I.S.T.W., Boys Scouts of America, 4-H and FFA, Little League Baseball and Watsonville High School Boosters. Jim will be greatly missed. A Mass and celebration of Jims life will be held at Valley Catholic Church (Our Lady Help of Christians) 2401 E. Lake Ave. Watsonville on , 8, 2016 at 10 am. Burial will follow at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Ag History Project (2601 E. Lake Ave. Watsonville) or a charity of your choice. Mehls Colonial Chapel was entrusted with funeral arrangements. |

Obituary: When someone is identified as a natural leader, certain images come to mind. First thoughts are of a strong, tough-minded, dedicated and disciplined person. This description accurately fits Frank Dutra who was indeed a born manager. He will be remembered as being highly organized, practical and realistic. He was a person who always carried a strong sense of duty with him throughout his life. Possessed with traditional old school morals, Frank was an individual who clearly communicated to those around him just who he was and what he was all about. Everyone acquainted with Frank knew him as a well-respected man who was a stable force in his community. Frank was born on 23, 1934 at home in San Jose, California. His parents were Frank and Mary Dutra. Frank was raised in San Jose, California. Even as a youngster, Frank learned to be objective and decisive. His faith in the principles of authority and dependability was something that he carried with him throughout his life. As a young boy, Frank was able to put his natural abilities to work. He was a bit like the sergeant of the family, helping to make sure that the others did what they should do and that they avoided those things they weren supposed to. In other words, he liked to organize and direct. Frank was raised with one sister, Mary. Frank had an inborn appreciation for the order in the family, allowing for the oldest members to be the most respected and to take on the most responsibility. For Frank, this was a natural order of life, one he gladly embraced. Franks matter-of-fact attitude about most things was developed during his childhood. As a young boy, Frank enjoyed being part of teams, and organizations and groups of other kids who shared similar interests. In his spare time he liked playing the saxophone and raising animals. Frank was sociable and approachable. Because he was always so straightforward in how he approached relationships, friends and family knew that what they saw was always what they got. He enjoyed the camaraderie of being with a group of friends. When Frank was a member of a group, his interaction worked to keep the others grounded. He wasn afraid to confront his friends and, when necessary, he challenged them to stick to the task at hand. Those close to Frank came to expect his high standards of performance. While growing up, some of his best friends were Charlie Barb, Stanley Edward, and David Soito. An objective and conscientious individual, Frank reveled in the security of his family. In 1961 Frank exchanged wedding vows with Maria a Cardoso at Assembly of God of Sacramento, California. One of Franks most endearing qualities was his uncanny ability to remember important dates and anniversaries, and his unending enthusiasm for organizing a celebration for his family and friends. Frank was ever watchful of his children. He worried about them and was deeply concerned for their development as they grew up. He maintained a firm hand in their upbringing. Frank would give his stamp of approval to their requests, as long as he could see how they might benefit. He also had the ability to enforce the rules as needed to ensure that his children were properly raised. Frank was blessed with two children. He had a son and daughter, Frank and Rosemary Dutra. were also blessed with four grandchildren, David, Shawna, Michael, and Kristie. Being a hard worker who praised efficiency, Frank was always striving to make improvements where they were necessary. He was able to analyze situations and problems, keeping everything and everyone on track. An excellent project supervisor, Frank was a person who could quickly make decisions based on the information available. He worked cooperatively and expected the same from his colleagues. In both his personal and professional environments, Frank upheld his standards. His primary occupation was as a welder. He was employed for 32 years at F.M.C. Frank was a team player who certainly lived out the motto of give me a job, and I will get it done. Frank was a U.S. Army veteran. His sense of duty helped lead him into the military where his understanding of rank, his willingness to abide by rules and regulations and his desire to follow orders was admired by his fellow service men and women. He was stationed in Italy. Through his hard work and dedication, he achieved the rank of Private - SP4(T)(E4). He received several awards recognizing him for his heroism, including a marksman award and Good Conduct Medal. Frank approached his leisure time in the same manner that he approached his life. A person who enjoyed being neat and orderly and one who understood the nature of things, he appreciated the hours he was able to devote to his various hobbies. His favorite pursuits were fishing, camping, and spending time with family. Frank was content to enjoy his favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share his interests with others. Faith was important to Frank. He held high moral standards and was worried about the moral decay he saw around him. For that reason he held deep spiritual beliefs that he was willing to share. He was a member of Calvary Community Church. Before that, he was a Deacon at the Portuguese Assembly of God Church and a saxophone player in the church orchestra. When it came time to travel or take a vacation, Frank used his scheduling expertise to make sure everyone and everything was ready to go. That also meant that he made certain no single person was overworked in putting the trip together. Frank had a knack for making sure that everyone who was involved had their specific tasks and that those tasks were completed. Favorite vacations included camping in the Sierras. When Franks retirement finally arrived in 1984, continued... |
