Obituary: Wendell Douglas Downer passed into Gods hands 18, 2016 to be reunited with the love of his life, Ruby, who had gone before him (2014). Doug was the loving Father of Judith Renteria and a great friend to Ray, her husband. Doug loved spending time with his grandsons Joe and Douglas and their families. He loved going to coffee and discussing Joes inventions with him, just as he loved talking about their mutual military experiences with young Douglas. Visits from Joe and Cindy and their children Isabella and Rodrigo, and from Douglas and Yadira and their children, Angie, Emily and Elizabeth, were among the happiest times in his life. He taught them to laugh at lifes problems and to always be kind. are all very like him. Doug was the third child of 8 born to Ellen and Carl Downer of Oakdale, Massachusetts. He took on the responsibility of caring for the 5 younger ones when his Mother became unable to do so. He was known for his pancakes by his grateful siblings: Orton, Velma, Marjorie, Alden, Wayne, Wesley and Marion. He began working on cars at an early age, and even owned his own garage for a time. He also sang on the radio and did some emcee work off and on. He loved being in front of people. Perhaps because Doug was born on Flag Day ( 14, 1928), he always had a great sense of patriotism. In 1950 he joined the Navy and began a 30 year career aboard a dozen ships from the U.S.S. Toledo to the U.S.S. Camden. He and his brother Wayne sang on the Navy radio. Doug was a storekeeper whose attention to detail, penchant for improving things and wonderful way with people led him up the ranks to E9, Master Chief. He spent three years in the service working at the Pentagon as a detailer. Doug was always fond of his Navy years and proud to serve his country. In 1952 Doug married Ruby Marie Linder who called him her knight in shining armor. never said an unkind word to each other in 62 years of marriage. If they disagreed, Doug would go to his garage and Ruby to her piano, until they forgot about it. always believed you had to put the other persons needs first in a marriage. Stationed in Florida at first, they moved to Downey, California when their daughter Judith Laurie was 3. (A second child, Scott Douglas, died shortly after birth.) God then blessed them with a son, Craig Wendell. Doug and Ruby ensured that Judi and Craig would know the family back east through long road trips to Ohio, Massachusetts and Florida. These trips made the four of them very close and gave them a great love for our nation. As Judi and Craig became teens, their friends found in the family a loving place to hang out. Some stayed for months; most stayed in contact through adulthood, they were all their kids. retiring from the Navy, Doug used his skills and experience to get an autobody degree, and began to teach students at Norwalk High School in Norwalk, California. He enjoyed helping the young people become skilled and thoughtful about their futures. While Ruby was finishing up her career at North American Rockwell, Doug spent time teaching and working on cars with his son, Craig. could always be found in a garage, restoring cars and having a great time. While Judi and Ray finished up degrees and had their son, Joseph Raymond, Craig decided to go to college in Florida, enjoy his cousins, and finish up his Dads Model A Ford. But he never made it back home. Through Gods loving comfort, family and friends Doug, Ruby and Judi survived the devastating loss of their precious son and brother, Craig, from an accident in 1982, just 6 months after Judi and Ray had their second son, Douglas Carl. Having 2 grandsons toddling around at that time was a great blessing to all. their retirements, Doug and Ruby moved to Cherry Valley, sharing a lilac farm with Judi and Ray and sons. Doug enjoyed being a gentleman farmer on his tractor, and giving lectures about their lilacs. found a church home in the Yucaipa Church of God where they had their 60th wedding anniversary. loved Hawaii and made several trips there touring the islands with family and friends. Doug also loved to bowl and they were often off to Laughlin for his tournaments. For years, Dad had been a member of SPEBSQA, and he continued singing Barber Shop Quartet music with the Golden Chordsmen of Hemet. It probably helped that Ruby could play his music on the piano. He drove his Model A Ford in many parades, especially in the Cherry Festival Parades, driving various dignitaries. In his last year he lived with Judith and Ray and looked forward to visits from his buddy, Shawn, and breakfast with Rubys brother Donnie, as well as sister Judy and sister-in-law, Ella. He was delighted whenever the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to see him. meant everything to him. Douglas is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Raymond Renteria; his grandsons Joseph and Douglas Renteria and their families (5 great grandchildren); his brothers Alden and Orton, his sister Velma, 22 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby, sons Scotty and Craig, a great grandson, Gabriel, brothers Wesley and Wayne, sisters Marion and Marjorie. His funeral was 6th, 2016 at Weavers Mortuary in Beaumont, California, with burial with full military honors at Riverside National . Donations may be sent to the Stroke Association of Southern California. under the direction of Weaver Mortuary, Beaumont, CA. |

Obituary: Marguerite Downer 1920 -- 2011 Marguerite Downer, fondly known as Maggie, died peacefully at home on 12th in Carmel in the company of loved ones who had gathered from near and far to comfort her in her final days. A woman of exceptional beauty and strong character, Maggie lived life to the fullest, traveled the world, and accomplished things that caused even her to wonder aloud from time to time if it all had really happened. Born in Mooringsport, Louisiana in 1920, Marguerite Linam at age 16 fell for William Webster Downer, dashing Captain of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. A two-minute service at a town office while on a teenage date commenced a joyful marriage lasting 69 years, until Webs death in 2006. Feminine and glamorous, Maggie nonetheless loved nothing more than to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty, especially on an historic renovation project. In the 1940s, while Web earned a Masters degree at M.I.T., Maggie restored a colonial house on Oxford Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. To this day it is the much-admired birthplace of William Eustis, a state Governor in the 19th century. In typical Maggie can-do fashion, she simultaneously raised two young children and modeled part time for newspapers and fashion shows. She next worked her magic in California. While living in San Francisco, Maggie saved a rural schoolhouse for her familys vacation use; the one-room Red Schoolhouse is now a prize of the Nacasio Historical Society of Marin . While Web was a US Army attache in Belgrade during the 1950s, Maggie embraced the traditional materials and craftsmanship she discovered in Europe, developing an aesthetic which enriched her future projects. Later in Washington DC she was among the first to renovate early American townhouses in the Capitol Hill district that has since been declared an historic neighborhood. Having fallen in love with the Monterey Peninsulas natural beauty and rich history, Maggie moved here in 1961, allowing her career in historic preservation to take root and blossom. She made a local name for herself committing to ambitious projects that many better-educated, more influential players deemed hopeless. She had the confidence of a field marshal, and a gift for motivating others to help her achieve "the impossible, often to the amazement of the nay-sayers. Among the many treasured local buildings Maggie helped preserve are the little red schoolhouse in Moss Landing; the Boston Store and Picket Fence; the First Episcopal Church (now the Mayo Hayes ODonnell Library); the Doud House and Perry House in historic Monterey, subsequently renamed the Perry-Downer House when Maggie and Web gifted the stately Victorian to the Monterey History and Art Association. The Cooper Molera Adobe and the Casa Amesti were restored when she served on the Advisory Committee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Against steep odds, Maggie and Fred Farr successfully spearheaded the preservation of Carmels Tor House, the former home of poet Robinson Jeffers. Her inexhaustible energy and tasteful vision enriched outdoor spaces as well as buildings in historic Monterey. Maggie founded the Historic Garden League, creating such gems as the Sensory Garden and the Casa Del Oro Garden. She also served on the board of the Monterey History and Art Association. Her official honors are too numerous to list here, but highlights include the Laura Bride Powers Award, Outstanding Achievement from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the first ever Living Legacies distinction from California State Parks. In 2007, the Community Foundation of Monterey presented her with its highest honor, the Distinguished Trustee Award. Maggie was equally proud to have been a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, a nation-wide supporter of historic preservation. She will be remembered by many area residents for her infectious enthusiasm for life, her mischievous sense of humor and her passion for promoting her progenys superhuman alents ad naseum to anyone willing to endure it. Maggie Downer is survived by daughter Elizabeth Libby Downer Simpson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and her husband Daniel Simpson; son Charles Downer of Cambridge, Massachusetts; grandchildren Leslie Dunton-Downer also of Cambridge, John Dunton-Downer of London, England and his wife Ana-María Vera; Elizabeth Downer of New York and her husband David Riker; Ahab Charles Downer of Victoria, the Republic of Seychelles and his wife Sophie Downer; and six great-grandchildren: Jordan Tucker Rountree, Leila Riker, Maria Riker, Naira Mar Dunton-Vera, Elissa Downer, and Léander Downer. Maggies friends are invited to a memorial celebration with remembrances which will be held in the garden at The Perry Downer House, 201 Van Buren Street, Monterey, from 3-6pm on 4th. Memorial donations will be gratefully received by The Historic Garden League of Monterey or The Community Foundation of Monterey . under the direction of The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, CA. |
