Obituary: It is with tremendous sadness that the sons of Sylvia Dorsey announce the passing of their mother on 26, 2015 in Bakersfield, California. Sylvia was born in Monkseaton Village, in the North East of England, to Stuart and Freda (nee Walker) Cramb. Her early years were happy carefree ones, with many days spent playing in and around the frigid waters of Whitley Bay on the North Sea with her older brother Robert. At the age of 7, the family left England on a Blue Star Line ship, captained by her Father. Their final destination Seattle, Washington, USA. Although the ship was supposed to be part of an armada lead by the British Navy, shortly before they were to disembark, the Navy pulled out and so did the other ships. Stuart asked Freda if she wanted to make the journey and she replied, "yes". So, at the height of Nazi Germany's U-boat attacks on ships in the North Atlantic Ocean, they made their way to Aruba, then through the Panama Canal and eventually landing in Seattle. This would be first of many adventures in her life. In Seattle, they moved into a cute little house on the top of Queen Anne Hill, with a huge picture window overlooking the City. Sylvia attended Queen Anne High School, and then the University of Washington, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Latin America Studies. While attending the University of Washington, she met Ridgely Edward Dorsey, and on 10, 1957, they married. a very short honeymoon in Palm Springs, Sylvia spent the summer living with her parents, as her new husband went off to map oil fields in the wilderness of Alaska. Upon Ridgely's return, they moved to Los Angeles so he could get a Master's Degree. While in Los Angeles, Sylvia worked as a librarian and a nursing assistant at UCLA. Then, from 1959 to 1964 they moved to Houston, Texas; Durango, Colorado; Fairfield, California; Ely, Nevada; back to Los Angeles; Bakersfield, California; back to Ely; Farmington, New Mexico; back to Houston; and then back to Los Angeles - most of these places they only stayed for a few months at a time, living in hotels or renting apartments. Finally, Ridgely and Sylvia moved to Bakersfield, where, in 1966 she gave birth to their first son Edward. then moved to Ventura, where she had their second son John in 1970. Five month later they made the move back to Bakersfield. This time, Bakersfield is where they would call home for the rest of their lives. The family would call the house on La Mirada Drive, home, for 45 years. During those 45 years, Sylvia was an incredible wife and mother. She supported her devoted husband, and raised two loving sons. She was always organized, and ready for another adventure. The house was kept spotless, and the garden in order. Many family trips were taken to places like Yosemite, La Jolla, England, Scotland, Europe, Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest and East Coast. She never missed a swim meet or soccer game during the years that both sons participated in each sport. Sylvia loved to play tennis, play bridge, put together jigsaw puzzles, garden, study history, read and travel. She loved to watch Soap Operas, the Today Show, Night Football, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Grass Court Tennis Championships at Wimbledon. She also loved to swim and boogie-board with her sons in La Jolla, and even in the shore-break at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Sylvia worked for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee prior to and during the Summer Games of 1984. The love of travel and helping to organize details for the Olympic Games, lead her to becoming a travel agent. At the age of 55, she went to work for Kern Travel assisting clients and friends plan trips, and along the way she went on numerous adventures to Africa, Korea, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, Nepal, French Polynesia, and Italy. Sylvia loved to help others, not only by planning trips, but through community service. She volunteered for years at the Guild House, Henrietta Weill Child Guidance Clinic, and Kern Bridges Youth s - where she was President of the Board in 1989. Once she retired from Kern Travel at age 65, she spent most of her time playing tennis, playing bridge, studying history with her friends, doting on her grandson Ridgely, working in the garden and continuing her travels with her husband and family. Sylvia is survived by her brother Robert and his wife Beverly, their daughter Allegra and her son Sabri, her son Edward, his wife Mimi and their son Ridgely, and her son John, his wife Kathryn and their two sons, Parker and Campbell. She is also survived by many friends in Bakersfield, and numerous cousins and their families in England. Sylvia's sons cannot fully express the gratitude they feel towards the staff at Clare Bridge Place in Glenwood Gardens, for the loving care they gave Sylvia while she was with them. We will always remember everything you did for her for the rest of our lives. We also cannot fully express our thanks to the families on La Mirada Drive, for being such wonderful neighbors and watching out for both of our parents in the last few years. We would also like to thank the staff of the Bakersfield Racquet Club, Stockdale Country Club, the Vons on Stockdale Highway and California Pizza Kitchen, for the service and friendship each provided to Sylvia over the years. A memorial service is scheduled for , 1, 2015 at 11:00am in the Chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, California 93306. Anyone and everyone who knew our mother is welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Kern Bridges Youth s, the Henrietta Weill Child Guidance Clinic, or have lunch at the Guild House in her memory. |
