Obituary: Anton “Tony” Dobre was born on 19, 1928 in Galati, Romania to loving parents Constantin and Elena and his older brothers Aurel and Vasile (“Sili”). Back then, the hospitals marked their birth certificate with the current date, rather than the actual date of birth, so his records indicate he was born on 21, 1928. His birthday was always celebrated twice as a result. Tony attended college at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, where he studied engineering and graduated at the top of his class. He worked for 45 years in the field he loved, electrical engineering. In 1980, at the age of 52, he immigrated to the United States to give his teenage son a better life. first lived in New York and at his first job there, Tony had a two-hour commute each way to work, which involved taking different forms of public transportation and walking two miles each way. He then moved with his son to Minneapolis in 1982 and lived there for three years, before finding employment in warmer weather. In 1985, he moved with his son to San Diego and has called it home ever since, often referring to San Diego as the “best city ever.” Tony is survived by his son Otto, daughter-in-law Mel, sister-in-law Adela, niece Mihaela, nephew Costica, great-niece Sabina and relatives Anthony, Eileen, Cecilia, Rodica, Alina, Ken, Raluca, Ron, Andy, Celia, Teo, Adi, Stefan and Nora. On May 4, 2016, our dear Tony joined his parents Constantin and Elena, brothers Aurel and Vasile (“Sili”) and many other relatives at rest with our Heavenly Father. Tony’s wish was for his ashes to be scattered in the San Diego Bay. His memorial service in the Bay will take place later this month. |
