Obituary: David Fredrick Dionne was a modest man, quiet and observant in his ways. He was trustworthy and traditional in his approach to his life and in his relationships. He was tough-minded with the kind of stick to it attitude that earned the respect of all who knew him. He was also a man who was meticulous, carefully disciplined, and orderly in virtually everything he undertook. Realistic about life, he was always at the ready, prepared to take on responsibility. David was born on 30, 1945 at St. Josephs in Pontiac, Michigan. His parents were Theresa and Joseph Dionne. David was raised in Pontiac, Michigan. He was brought up to be self-confident and dependable. These were traits that would serve him well throughout his life. Growing up in the Dionne household was a bit different than most homes. There were good times to be had, but just as often there was a fair share of challenges as well. However, David was able to work through the usual family problems when they appeared, and he was the one person in the family who seemed able to keep the stress at bay. David was raised with three siblings. He had two brothers, Joseph and Robert, and one sister, Joanne. David was constantly involved in activities with his brothers and sister. David and his siblings may have had the typical rivalries while growing up but David was always consistently loyal to his family. As a young child, David was never someone who needed to be the center of attention. He wasn pushy and never forced his way into games or other activities. David developed a variety of interests, though, and the things he enjoyed doing he did well. He was always curious about the world around him and was often eager to explore it. David took part in baseball. In his spare time he liked hunting and fishing. However, what David enjoyed most was simply playing and spending time with his many friends. Always considered to be a solid friend, David was fortunate to have numerous acquaintances and several very close friends during his life. Since he disliked making generalizations about people and preferred to draw his own conclusions based on direct observation, David was able to see beneath the surface of relationships and became a true friend to those who knew him. He was committed to his friends and valued the trust he placed in them. It was not uncommon for David to go beyond the call of duty for others, and friends frequently sought him out for advice because he had a knack for coming up with practical solutions to any type of dilemma. Later in life, he became friends with Jessie and Jose (Happy Vans). On 11, 1964 David exchanged wedding vows with Lucile Mae Olson at the Justice of the Peace in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Compassionate and devoted to Lucile, David held endearing, traditional values about marriage and family life. He took the responsibility of marriage to heart, giving it his total commitment. He was a source of strength to Lucile and using his gifts at nurturing one-on-one relationships, he worked hard to make his new family happy. David brought the same traditional values in his marriage to bear on how he raised his children. He was a good parent to them, always firm yet fair in his dealings. He would always listen carefully and think things through before he acted, even when it was an adverse situation. David was also a walking schedule, always seeming to know what everyone in the family needed to do, where they needed to be and when they needed to be there. David was blessed with two sons, Michael David and Brian James. He was also blessed with two grandchildren, David Michael and Monique Elizabeth. David greatly enjoyed what he did for a living. He was a hard worker who expected the same in return from his co-workers. He was skilled at working effectively in small groups and in one-on-one situations as well as handling solo assignments efficiently. David enjoyed dealing with concrete ideas and could penetrate any amount of fuzzy information to reach the essential facts. Always able to attend to the task at hand, David was excellent at meeting deadlines. He was an efficient worker, one who paid careful attention to detail, allowing sufficient time to complete one task before moving on to the next. His primary occupation was as a business owner. He was self-employed for 17 years. David worked hard to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done. David liked to experience things first-hand as well as learn about them. This trait carried over into his hobbies, where he was very methodical in how he organized his activities and categorized things. Since he enjoyed his private time, David always tried to allocate a specific time for working on his hobbies. His favorite pursuits were carpentry, landscaping, and golfing. David was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others. David found pleasure in sports. Being a person who was comfortable making win/lose decisions throughout life, he could appreciate that athletes made those types of decisions in sports. He applauded those who won, and he enjoyed the statistical data and sports facts and could find himself wrapped up in those details. Recreational sports included golf and bowling. He would watch his favorite sporting events whenever he got the opportunity. Tops on his list were football, baseball, and golf. Many organizations were grateful to have David as a member, since he always brought with him a stick to it attitude and a high degree of common sense. Using straightforward methods to successfully complete the job, David was a great planner who was incredibly well organized. It seemed that he was able to schedule any event or activity with ease. He always seemed to know exactly continued... |

Obituary: On the afternoon of 24, 2016, Carolyn Smith De Dionisio passed away peacefully at her assisted living residence, The Kensington Sierra Madre, after a brief illness. She was 97 years old. Born Carolyn Dorritt Smith in Berkeley, CA on 17, 1919, Carolyn was one of two children and the only daughter of the late Joseph Burritt Smith and Esther (Olin) Smith. Carolyn experienced a life full of hard work and adventure. With degrees from Cal State LA, UCLA, and USC, she was a natural-born researcher and artistically inclined in countless ways. 35 years as an elementary and middle-school teacher for LAUSD, she volunteered in a variety of capacities alongside her husband, the late Carl Lawrence De Dionisio, who served as a combat medic in WWII and Korea. Carolyn was also an active participant in the DAR. Married in Okinawa, the De Dionisios made their home in California, first in Van Nuys and then Encino. In retirement, the pair traveled the world, and visited all of the contiguous 48 states in their RV – beloved dog and cat in tow. In 2013, they moved into senior living. Carolyn and Carl were married for almost 66 years, until his death this past . Besides her husband, Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Glenn Olin Smith, and by many dear friends. Carolyn is survived by her family in Arkansas: sister-in-law, Janie F. Smith; niece, Bonnie Smith Turner and her husband, Stephen; nephew, Steven Smith and his wife, Danielle; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. On her husbands side, Carolyn is survived by a plethora of nieces and nephews, including Carls godson and nephew, Gordon Walk, and by Carls great-grand nephew, Joshua Chase and his wife, Elizabeth Carlton Chase, who served as family advocates for the De Dionisios during their twilight years. Carolyn left behind many friends, old and new. All who had the privilege to know her adored her. The family wishes to express special thanks to all those who provided love and support throughout the years, including most recently Carolyn and Carls caregivers and friends, Rosenda Rendon and Mariano Blanco, and the staff of The Kensington, including Julie Lacey, RN, and Michael Gurevitch, MD. Carolyn will be permanently memorialized at Oak Hall Memorial Park in San Jose, CA, and at Calvary in Erie, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Junior Blind of America at www.juniorblind.org. Condolences and personal comments may be sent to PO Box 1304, Monrovia, CA 91017. |
