Obituary: Stoney Lester DeMent, Jr. was born in Los Angeles but six years later, following the 1929 Stock Market Crash that caused his parents to lose their home and business, the family moved to Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains where a cabin was made available. His father was given 90 days to live following a serious heart attack but, thankfully, he lived 43 years more as a partial invalid. Stoney Sr. and his wife, Jeannette LeGro Smith DeMent, moved there, all they had was the small cabin and some life insurance with disability riders that gave them meager payments. There were only 150-200 people living in the mountain s full time. Also poor, they shared firewood, fish, game and friendship with the DeMent family and other needy residents. By 1933 it was evident to Stoney Sr. that he would outlive his 90 day sentence and they decided to lease the village of Blue Jay from Art and Nora Wixom. then borrowed money from a major California bank and started to build a market in a building that houses other businesses now. It opened in 1934 with Jeannette as manager and postmistress. Stoney Jr. became known by his middle name, Lester, to avoid confusion. He and his brother Donald James lived in the mountains most of their lives where they received their early education. High School education had to be down the hill at the San Bernardino High School where S.L.D. Jr. lived in a boarding house with the Monninger son, Doug and later Mary Monninger, who, years later, became the wife of Joe Matthews who would be an English teacher at the new Rim of the World High School at Lake Arrowhead where Lester was the principal. Following graduation, Lester went on to Occidental majoring in Physics and Math until World War II broke out and he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps where he served in Europe, mostly in Germany. He arrived home in 1946 and married his fiancée, Gloria Gail Thatcher, on May 11, 1946. Returning to Occidental , he finished his remaining two years and welcomed their first child, Stephen Michael, also born in L.A. at Queen of Angels Hospital. Following graduation, the new family moved to Blue Jay where two daughters were born in San Bernardinos St. Bernardines Hospital. Kathleen Mary and then Jane Frances . He was soon asked by the San Bernardino School District office if he could help them keep the Running Springs Elementary School open as a teacher was very ill and nobody else was available. The school would have to close if he refused. He argued that he had no training for eaching little kids but was willing to try his best. He quickly found that he loved teaching, loved the kids, the community and the whole world of elementary education. He taught a combination class of children from 5th to 8th grade. He drove up and down the mountain for university classes that turned his temporary certificate to a full credential and ultimately a graduate degree. Years passed and when the new high school was built, he was hired to be the principal there. Many of his Running Springs 8th grade students moved at the same time and life-long, deep friendships developed, remaining to this day, along with new student relationships. He loved them all. He loved the staff, the community and mountain life. He was also a volunteer fireman and later served as Fire Commissioner. Most of all, he loved his wife and children. He was active in many community and church endeavors. He was also very much involved in the development of Blue Jay, returned to Claremont to complete his Masters degree and did advanced work at UCLA . He retired in the 1970s, was an avid skier, golfer, ice skater, scuba diver and sports enthusiast. traveled every summer with the children to the National Parks enjoying rock hounding and nature studies. Later, Stoney and Gloria enjoyed traveling around much of the world including Natural Environment trips through the U.C. Riverside with two professors and returning participants. learned to create stained glass windows, producing their own for home and doing four windows from Navajo drawings to grace the walls of the Navajo Reservation in Crownpoint, New Mexico where they assisted for years. Having been called Stoney in the U.S. army, when a move was made to purchase a small property in Del Mar, San Diego, he said he would like to be called by his first name there but was comfortable with his mountain and old friends calling him by his middle name. Stoney and Gloria became fully involved as volunteers in the field of dyslexia for 26 years and started The Orton Dyslexia Society branch in San Bernardino . Later they volunteered as Literacy Directors of The Dyslexia Foundation, with Will Baker, Founder/Director. Much later, concerned about language development in infants to age 5, Stoney began The Language Literacy Link in San Diego and the Coachella Valley under TDF where dyslexia and other conferences, golf events, teacher training, and many other activities were provided in California and a number of other states. often attended and participated in private research conferences in various parts of the world with researchers from different countries. It was an enriching, educational and inspiring time which served them well in their work. Regretfully, they realized they had to retire when they were unable to continue their volunteer work because of medical problems. Stoney retired from his Rim High principalship in the late 1970s. Blue Jay sold, Gloria retired in 1985 from teaching and they moved full time to North , San Diego. As the aging process produced more health issues, their doctor urged them to find a 3-4 level retirement facility. exploring a number of places, they chose Redwood Terrace in Escondido where they have been very happy for six years.
