Obituary: Tsuruko Arakaki Dauz (Oba) was born in Nakagusuku, Okinawa, Japan on 25, 1931. She was the 3rd daughter of 4 brothers and 4 sisters of the late Kamasei Arakaki and Haru Henna. Tsuruko was preceded in death by her parents and eldest brother Zenko Arakaki. Close friends and companion from Okinawa included Oba Haruko Sanchez and Lolo Fernando Sanchez Sr. Tsuruko passed away early morning 8, 2015 after a long battle with COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease that lead to her sudden cardiac arrest. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Eliseo Sr., sons, Eliseo Jr. and Ricardo, grandchildren, Michael, Nathaniel, Samantha, David, and Weston, daughter-in-law, Annie, granddaughter-in-law, Nancy, and her 2 siblings here in the United States Sue Troup of Baltimore Maryland and Yaeko Blas of Dallas Texas and 5 remaining siblings, Teruko, Zenji, Jensan, Jenshiro and Tomiko of Okinawa Japan. In 1937, when Tsuruko was six years old her, her family were uprooted and relocated from Okinawa to the mountains Miyako because of World War II. By 1950, she moved back with her family to Okinawa. At 19, she found a government job to help provide for her family as a typist at a U.S. Army base. It was at this job she met her husband, Eliseo, who was a Filipino National civilian employee with the U.S. Army. fell in love and were married in 1952. Shortly after their first son, Eliseo Arakaki Dauz Jr., was born in 1952 in Naha, Okinawa. In 1959, Tsuruko moved to the Philippines with her son. Her husband was unable to join them due to work responsibilities keeping him in Okinawa until 1964. Later that year her second son, Ricardo Arakaki Dauz, was born in Bislig City in Surigao Del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines. During her time in the Philippines Tsuruko had to overcome a lot of adversity being an immigrant in a new country and unable to speak the language. A moment at the local market in Manila motivated her to learn Tagalog. The vegetable merchants knew she was not a native and took advantage of her and hiked up the prices, charging her twenty cents for vegetables worth five cents. She hired a tutor to learn the language and focused her energy in raising her two sons. In 1962, Tsuruko and her family returned to Okinawa because she got sick and had respiratory and lung illness. Although she was seriously ill, she fully recovered with the loving support from her husband, children, parents, and siblings. In 1964, with her husband and children, Tsuruko returned to the Philippines. Her focus was being a mother to her two handsome sons. During their 16 years in the Philippines, she worked at a shopping center and then transitioned to become a language interpreter. Focused on her sons well being she decided to put her children in private school. In 1980, Tsuruko immigrated to the United States with her husband and started to create a life in their new country. One of her early and proud experiences in America was passing the driving test to get a license. The gentleman who facilitated her driving test was an American who spoke English too quickly for her. At one point during the exam she told the man, Me don speak English that well, please speak slowly. The man graciously agreed, and Tsuruko passed her driving test on her first attempt. She worked as a barista at a coffee shop at the San Jose International Airport, which consisted of her waking up at 4AM to get to work on time. She transitioned into her final job at the Duty Free Store until she retired 14 years later at the age of 67. During her retirement she had a group of friends she would meet once a month for lunch. She also liked to maintain her physical fitness by walking, riding a stationary bike, maintaining garden at home, or walking around the mall. Her role shifted from mother to grandmother as her sons we e having children of their own. The grandchildren called Tsuruko, Oba which means grandma in Japanese. Oba would cook her grandchildren omirice, Japanese rice omelet, whenever they would visit her. She looked forward to and was excited every time her grandchildren would visit. She was the matriarch of the Dauz clan and used food to bring her family together. During special holidays/events she would spend the day preparing to cook sukiyaki, a Japanese dish that is cooked at the table consisting of thin beef, vegetables and broth. Tsuruko lead an amazing life that brought her all over the world. She overcame many adversities and raised two wonderful sons. Those who came in contact with her will remember her selfless attitude, caring heart, and lovely laugh. Her unconditional love of her grandchildren will stay with them for the rest of their lives. |
