Obituary: On 20th, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, took Charles Henry Chapman home to spend eternal life in His heavenly Kingdom. It was one day shy of his 90th birthday. His wife, Dellie was at his side. Charles was born on a ranch in Terry, Montana on 21, 1924, the third child of Lee and Phyllis Chapman; four boys and four girls. He rode his horse Buck, to a one room rural schoolhouse during his early school years. When the children spent the winters in town, they walked. high school, Charles was drafted in the Army during WWII as a medic. He was wounded in the hip in Italy and spent a year in military hospitals and received a Purple Heart. Upon recovery, Charles enrolled at Montana State in Bozeman, and then transferred to LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. The traveling bug led him to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tasmania. For a few years, Charles worked on airplanes in Bremerton, Washington. Then he bought a cute cottage on the coast in Pacific Grove, CA and worked in Monterey in his field of mechanical engineering. Since he always had a passion to build a plane from a kit, he bought a house on 26 acres of walnut trees and pasture in Morgan Hill, CA and began his project with a Pazmany 1. The wing span was 35 feet inside the house. During the day, he commuted to Silicon Valley and worked on the plane in the early evenings. The love bug hit him when he was introduced to a local schoolteacher, Dellie. a year of dating, they went on a hike on the land. When Dellie’s dogs disappeared over a hill, Charles proposed marriage and she said, “yes”. were married in 1968 and moved in with her collie, German Shorthair Pointer, and three cats. The airplane wing stayed in the house and Dellie became, “Rosie the Riveter”. In 1970, they adopted three week old, Jason. When Jason was 18 months old, the wing had to be moved outside because of his sensitivity to the noise. Eventually, the plane was moved to the local airport, where it was completed, flown and sold several years later. In 1989, Charles retired from his job, sold the ranch and moved to Atascadero in 1990. He became active in an airplane club, SLO 170. He was the refreshment chairman. Those homemade chocolate chip oatmeal cookies were a hit! During the first years in Atascadero, he began building another kit plane, RV6. He was ¾ done when he couldn’t finish it physically. He sold the plane and enjoyed retirement. For the rest of the 90s and into the 2000s, he enjoyed docent led hikes, as well as walking on local back roads with a dog. Each year he visited his siblings throughout Montana. In 1999, he retraced his steps in Australia, etc… Charles is survived by Dellie, his wife for 46 years; Jason, his son; grandchildren, Serfina and Sparrow; brothers and sisters, Marjorie, Lee, Ruth, and Jerry; nieces and nephews and their children; Elfy, his chosen pound dog; and Miss Kitty Manx. A memorial service will be held on 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Cornerstone Community Church 7920 Santa Rosa Road Atascadero, CA 93422. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to the Cornerstone Community Church Building Fund, Parkinson’s Disease, and Alzheimer’s. |

Obituary: Dr. Charles Edward Stourton Chapman (Charlie, Chuck or Dude), born 19, 1914 in Southern California, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on 10, 2014 in Sacramento, California. Moving from the McKinley for Boys in Burbank, California to a ranch in Montana during the Depression, Charlie earned the nickname dude for his city-slicker ways, but learned early on how to use his hands, appreciate nature, make flapjacks in -40 degree weather and work with others to achieve extraordinary things against all odds. With these experiences, he built a diverse career, loving family and wonderful life of adventure and service that impacted thousands of people throughout his century on this earth. Still in Montana when World War II began, Charlie decided to enlist despite his good draft number. He opted for the new Army Air Corps and was chosen for officer training. a brief stay at Moffett Field in San Jose, California, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and finished the war a major in charge of several thousand enlisted personnel at an air base in Iceland. He was perfectly happy to talk about the comical cadence of Jimmy Stewart as a training officer, but it was with reluctance that he told of the time he carried a woman from a burning church in London after a Luftwaffe raid. Throughout his life, he held close two particular items of advice from his mother: to continue his education and to never smoke cigarettes. the war, this advice helped him make one of the most important decisions of his life, and he turned down a promotion in the Army to earn his Bachelors, Masters, and eventually his PhD from UC Berkeley. Charlies PhD focused on a new concept of education spreading in the U.S. in the 1950s and 60s: community colleges. These were so new at the time that, even though he was a recent graduate with his PhD, he was hired to be the President of a newly formed campus in Barstow, California. Shortly after that, he was invited to interview for the presidency of a new community college in Cleveland, Ohio, the flagship community college for the state. He was warned that they had a budget of only $75,000 and no promise of any more. He risked giving up his job at a growing campus in a growing state for a school that didn even exist yet. But the potential to do more for more people was there, and the opportunity to create something completely innovative that could improve the lives of countless people was too much to resist. Despite strong political opposition and the many challenges of enabling education for everyone during the height of the Civil Rights movement, Charlie persevered and Cuyahoga Community , and the entire concept of Community s in America thrived. Over time, the college system he founded and fought for expanded to four campuses, educating tens of thousands of students. many years, he returned to California and served as the Chancellor of the State Community District in Fresno. Throughout everything, Charlie was a devoted family man, married to his loving and supportive wife, Naoma Ledbetter Chapman for almost 60 years until her death in 2003. He is survived by three children, Diana (Bob) Smith, David (Marilyn) Chapman, and Cindy (Mike) Roof; eight grandchildren, Storey Smith, Cordell (Stacey) Smith, Chad Smith, Christi (Steve) Allen, Tayler Frances Chapman, Abraham (Paula) Roof, Ashley (Eric) Mayers and Melanie Roof, and six great grandchildren. At 99, Charlie lived in his own home, with a beautiful garden, his springer spaniel Lady, and had a lively social calendar. A man determined not to be average, Charlie never was. A lifelong learner who read poetry and philosophy until the week of his death and an avid golfer who managed to golf his age until 95, Charlies zest for life and knowledge inspired those around him until the very end. Services and a military honor guard ceremony will be held at Mount Vernon Memorial Park at 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, California at 10am on morning, 15, 2014.
