Mrs. Birkhead was of the Baptist faith and she retired from General Electric after forty-two years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Obituary: Janet Taylor Birkhead, 83, of Owensboro passed away , 24, 2008 at the Hermitage . Born 1, 1925 in Chrisney, IN, Miss Birkhead was the daughter of the late Eben and Reba Taylor Birkhead; graduated from Daviess High School in 1943; and completed nursing training at San Diego General Hospital School of in 1946. She worked at hospitals in Hawaii, California, New Mexico, and Wyoming before earning a bachelors degree in nursing from Indiana University in 1961. She then spent 4 years as the Director of at Muhlenberg Hospital and 30 years at Owensboro Daviess Hospital in the Medical Unit. Miss Birkhead was a member of First Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling, visiting most areas of the United States and several foreign countries. She was most proud of her nursing career and work at the church. She was inducted in 2004 into the Hermitage Hall of Fame which honors the contributions of retired community leaders. She was preceded in death by a brother, James W. Birkhead and sisters, Louise Mitchell Rafferty, Ventress Hinds, Rachel Crutcher, Sedalia Montgomery, and Rebecca Dowling. Surviving are nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. , 27, 2008 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Sorgho with Rev. Allen Shouse officiating. The family will receive friends in the Pleasant Grove Fellowship Hall following the service. Glenn is handling arrangements. She was born 4, 1920 to the late Peter J. and Mary Elizabeth Comtess in Scranton, PA. She worked as Executive Assistant at the Family Y and assisted her husband with their farm in Stanley, Kentucky.
