Obituary: Roy Lee Athey died peacefully in his sleep 18, 2013. He was born May 1, 1923 in South Pekin, Illinois to Roscoe Franklin and Laura Elizabeth (Fears) Athey. Roy excelled in sports at South Pekin grade school and Pekin High School, setting records in track and basketball. He joined the US Navy 8, 1941, one day after Pearl Harbor. He was sent to Great Lakes for basic training; San Diego, California to aviation ordinance school; Norfolk, Virginia into a Transitional Training Squadron Atlantic; Banana River Naval Air Station, Cocoa Beach, Florida, patrolling the Caribbean for German subs. This was where he met the love of his life, Geraldine Farrar Johnston. were married in Cocoa, Florida on 6, 1943. Roy was honorably discharged from the Navy as Aviation Chief Ordinance man in 1945. He attended University of Florida, Gainesville, from 1946 through 1948. Roy then worked in the research lab at Caterpillar Tractor , East Peoria, Illinois, where he became interested in the chemistry of metal. Roy went back to school at University of Illinois, graduating with honors as a metallurgical engineer in 1953. The best offer was working for General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio and he was quickly promoted into management. Roy's greatest desire was to spend his life in Florida. The opportunity came 30, 1961 and no one loved his job more at Pratt-Whitney than he did developing powder metallurgy, several high temperature alloys and his crowning achievement named Gatorizing, for which United Technologies built a plant in Columbus, Georgia, to produce it. For this, Roy received the George Mead Award, which is the highest award given by United Technologies Corporation. Roy's passions outside of his wife and career were fishing , boating, golf and family. He fished from Alaska to Key West as well as Canada; golfing whenever and wherever he could; boating in the intercoastal waterway and the Keys. He loved his entire family, but was content to just be with his best friend, soul mate and wife of seventy years, Jeri. He was predeceased by daughter Annette (Athey) Staples, great-grandson Merrick Marshall Benjamin, parents, sisters; Dona Wolfle, Blanche Meyer, Elma Niepagen and brother Frank Athey. Roy is survived by his wife, Jeri, daughters Laura Lee DaSilva (Joseph) and Robin Elaine Zenga (James), granddaughters Heather Ruth Benjamin (Frank Hernandez) and Mary Elizabeth Dashiell (Lee), grandsons, Zachary James and Dylan James Zenga, great-granddaughters Rowan and Regan Ann Dashiell, his sister Marilyn Weise and brother Dale Athey (Darlene) and many nieces and nephews. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, but Roy was at his core a devout Christian. He served on the building committee and as a Deacon and an Elder at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Lake Park, Florida, before transferring to First Presbyterian Church in North Palm Beach, Florida. There will be visitation at Howard - Price , 754 US Hwy 1, North Palm Beach 33408 on , 29th from 6pm to 8pm. A Celebration of Roy's Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in North Palm Beach, with Senior Pastor Walter B. "Lucky" Arnold III officiating on 30th at 2pm. The family will receive guests in the Fellowship Hall following the service. A second visitation will be held at the Crestview , 1623 Highway 109N, Gallatin, TN 37066 on , 3, 2014 from 6pm to 8pm. Interment to follow at Crestview Memorial Park on , 4, 2014 at 11am. The family wishes to thank the faithful caretakers who spent so many years being a part of our extended family, especially Anthioda Charles (Charlie) and Rose Labossiere and to thank Hospice of Palm Beach , 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33407 for making the last days peaceful during Roy's passing. Obituary: Geraldine (Jeri) Farrar Johnston Athey ( 5, 1923 - 23, 2016) Jeri was born in Sumner , TN to Haseltine Hassie Steele and John Thomas T Johnston. The family moved to FL in 1934 and Jeri attended Titusville High where she learned to dive, play tennis and basketball (winning MVP) until T\s sudden death in 1940. While living in Cocoa Beach, FL a year later she met and married the love of her life Roy Athey. Following WWII, they lived in FL, IN, IL, WA and OH until Roy transferred jobs to Pratt & Whitney in Palm Beach in 1961. Using videos, photographs and books Jeri taught herself the principals and physics of diving in order to coach her oldest daughter Laura Lee. Laura Lee became a competitive diver and Jeri became a professional coach. She taught students in public and private schools from Jupiter to Boca Raton. Her divers consistently won regional, state and national medals, with her youngest daughter Robin winning gold in the International Games in Winnipeg, Canada and becoming a U.S. All American diver. From 1961 to 1987 Jeri held many offices with the Florida Gold Coast A.A.U. starting with Sr. Womens Diving Chairman, VP, (the first female) President, Sec., & Treas. She also served as Chairman of Registration for Junior Olympic Diving. She was a delegate to all A.A.U. and U.S. Diving National Conventions, and was elected Co-Chairman of the National Junior Olympics Committee. She was coach/manager of U.S. teams competing in Winnipeg (1977), Stuttgart, GE (1979) and the National Sports Festival (1981). She also chartered the North Palm Beach Diving Team and hosted the Pan American Diving Trials in 1979 held at the North Palm Beach Country Club. She served as a Member of the U.S. Olympic Committee for the Seoul, Korea Games (1988) and was inducted into the International Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame (2003) having served as a Dame since 1966. She coached her grandchildren and great-grandchildren through her retirement at age 80. An avid and competitive card player, Jeri enjoyed her bridge clubs and teaching her children and grandchildren how to play and to win many card games. She was a lifelong and accomplished bowler winning many trophies over the years. Jeri was uncompromising in her principals, had a flair for fashion, designed her own home, was fiercely loyal to her friends and family and was a true Steele magnolia. She was predeceased by her best friend and husband Roy, her daughter Athey Staples and her great-grandson Merrick Marshall Benjamin. She leaves behind her beloved daughters Laura Lee DaSilva (Joseph) and Robin Zenga (James), her grandchildren Heather Benjamin (Frank Hernandez), Mary Elizabeth Dashiell (Lee), Zachary Zenga, Dylan Zenga, her great-granddaughters Rowan and Regan Dashiell and a wonderful extended family and many friends. Visitation takes place Thurs. Mar. 31 from 6 - 8 pm at Howard-Quattlebaum located at 754 US HWY 1 in North Palm Beach, FL. service will take place 1 at 10 am, at First Presbyterian Church of North Palm Beach, 717 Prosperity Farms Rd. Obituary: Athey, Billy Franklin, 84, of Odessa, FL passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on 16, 2014. Preceded in death by his parents, Buck and Nellie Athey of Salisbury, NC; sister, Dorothy (age 4); and his son, William G. (Bill) Athey of Odessa, FL. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Georgia Lee Athey and his daughter, Sybil Ann Bowen (Rick) of St. Louis, MO. He will be greatly missed by many including grandsons, Ryan Athey (Ortheline) of Odessa, FL and Wilson Athey of Tampa, FL; granddaughters, Leanne and Marisa Bowen of St. Louis, MO; and two great grandchildren. Born and raised in North Carolina, Bill has been a Tampa Bay resident since 1971. Bill proudly retired after serving 20 years in the US Air Force and also retired from the US Post Office. He was an avid NC Tarheels and St. Louis Cardinals fan. A visitation and service will be held from 6-8pm on , 21 at Blount & Curry~West Chapel, 6802 Silvermill Dr, Tampa.
