Obituary: Donald Bruce Umiker, 71, of Brandon, FL passed away peacefully , 30th, 2013 at his daughters home in Clearwater, FL surrounded by family. Donald went by Don or Donny by his close family and friends. Don was born 13, 1942 in Binghamton, NY to Erwin Sam and Arlene Umiker. He was raised on a dairy farm in Berkshire, NY along with his 3 siblings until he graduated from Newark Valley High School at 16 years old. Upon receiving a scholarship Don left the farm to attend Cornell University. college Don was a middle school science teacher in upstate New York. Eventually Don moved his wife and daughter to Florida. He was general manager of Grandway and J.M. Fields retail stores until he bought a couple of nursery schools that kept him busy. He really enjoyed driving the nursery school buses. Don was a proud member of the Rotary Club of Clearwater. When Don wasn working he was spending time at family gatherings, vacationing in New York, hunting, fishing, farming, helping others, and just for the fun of it he got his pilot license. He was predeceased by his niece, Sherri Lynn Aversa. He is survived by his loving daughter Cindee MacLaren and husband Peter, beloved grandson Malcolm, brother Gary Umiker and wife Sharon, sister Janet Aversa and husband Alex, and brother Tom Umiker and wife Julie, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. For taking care of Don through the years and especially in his final months a special thank you to former wife and friend until the end, Patricia Umiker. The family would also like to thank all the caregivers and thank all his wonderful family and friends that visited him, called him, sent cards, and sent prayers. Dad, I will miss your sincere boisterous laugh and big hugs until we meet again. Hugs and Kisses! Visitation will take place , 12, at 1 PM and memorial services will follow at 2 PM at Wells Memorial Chapel in Plant City, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation www.fastercure.org or Suncoast Hospice Foundation www.thehospicefoundation.org. |
