Obituary: JOAN THERESA CONROY UHAR Joan Theresa Conroy Uhar passed away at the Spruce Creek Assisted Living Facility in Port Orange on 28, 2016 under the care of Halifax Hospice and in the presence of her two daughters. Joan was born in Far Rockaway, New York, on 18, 1927, the first of seven (7) children of James J. Conroy, Jr. and Helen Conroy. Joan went to Western High School in Washington, DC then Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA where she received a degree in music. At Duquesne she met Robert David Uhar, a hometown boy back from the War in the Pacific, where he served as a medical corpsman on the USS Mercy. a wonderful courtship, they married in Clarkesville, MD on 24, 1950. Joan and Bob raised their family of six children in Cheverly MD. Joan taught for many years at St Ambrose Catholic School in Cheverly MD. Joan loved the many students she taught at St. Ambrose, her fellow teachers, the nuns, and the parent-teacher interaction. Joan went back to school later in life, receiving a Masters of Education from George Washington University while teaching at St. Ambrose. Joan and Bob moved to Florida in 2002, where they spent many happy years golfing in the morning, enjoying the beach in the afternoon, cooking and entertaining family members and making new friends. Joan was a member of the Ponce Inlet Garden Club and a parishioner at the Catholic Church of the Epiphany in Port Orange. Joan was an adventuresome traveler who loved visiting her children wherever they lived including Egypt, Jamaica, Indonesia & Panama. the death of her husband in 2011, Joan continued her walks to the beach for a few months before breaking a hip enroute to the beach. Joan subsequently moved to Brookdale Yorktowne Assisted Living Facility (formerly Emeritus) in Port Orange, with many extended trips back home when her children & grandchildren would visit. Prior to her 88th birthday, Joan broke her left arm and left hip requiring surgery and extensive rehabilitation. The family would like to thank all the wonderful people Joan met at Port Orange and Rehab , Brookdale Yorktowne, Solaris Daytona, Spruce Creek Assisted Living Facility and Halifax Hospice. Joan Conroy Uhar was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her brother Robert (Bobby) Conroy. Joan is survived by her siblings Helen, James III, Peggy, Kathy & Michael. Joan leaves her six children: Robert Jr (Margaret), Ann (Mauro), Mark (Julia), John, Roger, and Faith (Jim) and ten grandchildren: Ian, Aidan, Emily, John, Mark, Claire, Kit, James, Jack and Isabel. Joan Theresa Conroy Uhar will be remembered for her warm smile; her keen curiosity to continue learning; and her love of music, sports and the arts. Joans ever-positive outlook on life and the ability to see good in all people continues as a beacon to all who knew her. Friends of Joan from Florida are invited to a reception in her honor this on , May 14 at 75 Rains Ct, Ponce Inlet 32127 from 4-6 PM. A funeral mass will be held in Cheverly MD on 18 at St Ambrose Catholic Church. Internment with her husband at Fort Lincoln will follow.
