Obituary: Mrs. Gwendolyn (Gwen) Martin Thompson, age 89, of Tallahassee, FL, formerly of Toccoa, went home to be with the Lord on , 12, 2015. Gwen was born in Detroit, Michigan an 17, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Pierce R. Martin and the late Eunice (Griffin) Martin, both from Georgia. Within the first year of her life, her fathers work transferred him back to Georgia. From then, most of her life was lived in Georgia until her marriage. In 1945 she met Robert G. Thompson and they were married in 1946, and made their home in Atlanta, GA. While living in Atlanta, the Lord blessed them with a son to carry on the family name. Three years later, in 1950, Bob and Gwen felt God was calling them into the ministry. then moved to Nyack, NY to enter Nyack Bible for a four year course. Gwen helped with finances by doing odd jobs. She also helped other students by typing test papers and etc. Her lifes goal was to be a pastors wife and she felt their life there was good training. graduation, they were called to their first church in Florida under the Christian and Missionary Alliance. As ten years went by, missions was still on their hearts. Since their age was over the limit for overseas ministry, they entered a rural Missions organization known as Village Missions. believed that God opened that opportunity for them, and they moved to N. W. Nebraska to pastor 3 churches at the same time. served as rural missionaries for 8 years in Nebraska and Oregon. While in Nebraska, God gave them a precious little daughter, Dixie Dee, through adoption. that 8 years, they felt led to return to the C&MA, pastoring Alliance churches, located in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. Gwen also served in each church with her husband as his secretary, church pianist and organist, and childrens worker. Gwen delighted in working with the womens missionary groups also. She organized 3 age group nurseries as the congregation grew, and she was instrumental in starting a day care school because she and her husband loved the babies and little children, and saw a need in the community. The churchs congregation was a very loving and caring people to work with and she gave God the praise for all that was accomplished during their ministry there. Through the years of their ministry, Gwen rejoiced with her husband over several young couples who became missionaries and pastors. Her lifes goal was realized and completed as they pastored their last church in Florida before retiring in 1991. retiring, they returned to Toccoa, GA and became active members of the church they had pastored there before. Gwen was predeceased by her daughter, Dixie Dee Wade; her brother K. P. Martin; and her beloved husband, Rev. Robert G. Thompson. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth R. and Linda Beck Thompson; grandson, Ron Thompson and his wife Michelle; grand-daughter, Kristin Maloney and her husband Brian; great-granddaughters, Ansley Maloney and Brianna Maloney; a former son-in-law, Ron Wade of Toccoa, GA.; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Martin of McDonough, GA.; and three nieces and a nephew of GA.; also many loving and caring relatives and friends. Gwen was loved and greatly appreciated as a pastors wife and a friend to everyone. To God be the Glory. services will be held at ten oclock , 17, 2015 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary. Burial will follow at Roselane . The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 6pm - 8pm , 16, 2015. Memorials may be designated to Alzheimers Research, or Toccoa First Alliance Church building fund. Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. |
