Obituary: Ivan R. Thompson, 85, passed away on , 1, 2015 in Ocala. He was born in Manchester, Jamaica WI and moved to Ocala in 1993 from Rosedale, NY. Ivan retired from the NYCTA and was a member of the Souls harbor Church. He was very involved in the churches he belonged to over the years and loved photography and gardening. Obituary: BIOGRAPH OF IRENE ETTA BARBER THOMPSON: Irene Etta Barber Rena was born in Tampa on May 24th 1919 to Leo David and Alice M. Barber in the home her Daddy built in Belmont Heights. She was the third of nine children, the oldest daughter. Their home was a simple home with no running water or lights. had an outhouse and water pump in the yard. Renas daddy, Leo Sr. was a Holiness Minister and office equipment repairman while her mama, Alice, was a home maker. Rena was a person of strong family value and a true Floridian that would give assistance to anyone in need. She always made you feel like kinfolk. During the depression, the family was of little means and in 1933 at the age of 14 she dropped out of school to help support the family. School was three miles from home and the children would walk. When the soles of their shoes wore out, they would place a piece of pasteboard inside their shoes for soles. Rena had eight siblings, listed in order are Joe, Rob, Maggie, Buddy, Rosie, Leo, Herman, and Nancy. Then in 1940, Rena went to work for Have a Tampa as a cigar roller and with her money purchased three cows and 100 or so chickens to supply the family with milk, butter, and eggs. Later, during World War II she went to work at the Tampa shipyard painting boats, but soon found out she was scared of heights. She quit and went back to rolling cigars. that, Renas daddy passed away May 19th, 1947 at the age of 54. She was 28. With the passing of her daddy, her Mamas only income was the childrens social security. To keep the family going, Rena continued to support the family. Then on 1st of 1974, after a short illness her loving mama passed away. When Renas younger sister, Rosie, dated and married James H. Allen Sr., Allen introduced Doyle to Rena and the two ran off to Thomasville Georgia in of 1947 and married. Allen and his close friend Edward Doyle Thompson better know as Doyle both worked for Tampa Electric. purchased their home on a dirt road named Sligh Avenue. This home remained the family residence, until their respective deaths. Rena was a homemaker and proud mother. She gave birth to two children Edward Doyle Thompson, Jr. on 3rd 1952 and a daughter, Debra Ann Thompson on 7th 1957. Renas family continued to grow. Her son, Ed has three children, Bethany Betney Gail Thompson, Wesley Edward Thompson, and Sarah Luree Thompson Kaufman and eight grand children Morgan Thompson, Noah Thompson, Isaiah Williams, Malachi Williams, Kailey Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Chandler Kaufman, and Connor Kaufman. Her daughter, Debra has a son Matthew James Wilson. Both Doyle and Allen were active outdoors men and the families spent many weekends at the Shady Oaks fish camp on Lake Kissimmee, camping and fishing in Okeechobee, or quail hunting across Florida. The two families are very close and all of Renas family is very close to this day. Rena was a wonderful cook, the kind that didn need a cook book. If you ever asked for a recipe she would happily recite it from the top of her head. Everyone left her table satisfied. At the Barber Family Reunions held every , she always prepared Chicken and Dumplings, Carrot Cake, Cuban sandwiches, ham and a roast. She loved children and they loved her, too. Their little eyes would light up around her. Rena loved to sing them songs. One of her favorites is the Burglar Man. This song brings fond memories to many of the grown children. Rena was a care giver and nurturer, after 33 years of marriage, at an early age Doyle passed away on 3, 1981 from cancer. She cared for her brother Joe in the final stages of emphysema and later her mother in law, Thetis, suffering from heart disease. Rena enjoyed working and continued to care for many family members, friends and strays. living a loving and vibrant life, surrounded by her devoted family in her final hours, Rena Etta Thompson passed away on 21, 2010 at 3:29 pm. Barber Sr. She was a lifetime resident of Tampa, Florida. Irene worked for Hav-A-Tampa as a cigar roller and in her later years she became a loving mother and homemaker, She was a long time member of the Community Advent Christian Church in Seffner, Florida. Irene was predeceased in death by her devoted husband, Edward Doyle Thompson, Sr. Her parents Leo D and Alice M Barber Sr. two Brothers, Joseph G. Barber, and Robert Barber and two sisters, Margaret Carr and Mildred Musick. Survivors include son Edward Doyle Thompson Jr. (Sabrina) of Alva, Florida, daughter Debra Thompson Wilson of Lutz, Florida, brothers, Leo D. Barber, Jr, (Mary ) of Dover, Florida and Herman E. Barber, Sr. (Linda) of Prattville, Alabama, sisters, Rose Ann Allen (James H Sr.) of Thomasville, Georgia, and Nancy Prall, (Robert) of Tampa, Florida, four grandchildren, Bethany Thompson, Wesley Thompson, Sarah Kaufman, Wesley Thompson, and Matthew Wilson, and eight great-grand children. She had many Nieces, Nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be on , 27, from 6-8 p.m. with funeral services on , 28, at 2 p.m. both services to be at the Hillsboro Memorial , Brandon.
