Obituary: KING, Shannon Denise, 44, of Tampa passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and close friends on , 18, 2014. Shannon was born in Tampa on May 20th, 1970. She attended St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School and graduated from Plant High School in 1988. She then went on to Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia where she was an active member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, the same sorority that both her mom and sister belonged. She then proceeded to attend the of Charleston in Charleston, SC and completed her education from the University of Tampa with a degree in Elementary Education. It was then that she found her true calling in life, working with children! Her teaching career began at Egypt Lake Elementary in 1994 but in 2001 she found her teaching home at Roosevelt Elementary, where she currently taught third grade. In her 20 years of teaching, over 1,200 children were fortunate and blessed to have been in Ms. King’s Class. In the midst of teaching she earned her National Board Certification in 2006. During her time at Roosevelt, Shannon led several committees. She was Team Captain of the Roosevelt Group of the Relay for Life fundraiser, and was proudly honored as “2014 Teacher of the Year”. Shannon was a member of the Junior League of Tampa and also a lifelong member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, a 1990 Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla Debutante, a 1992 Maid on the Gasparilla Court and an elected Sponsor of the MerryMakers Club. Despite all of her accolades, Shannon’s true passions in life were her family, friends and students for whom she devoted all her time and energy. Her favorite pastimes were watching her nieces and nephews in their various activities, teaching and volunteering at Roosevelt and spending time with her many lifelong friends. Her eternal optimism, genuine heart and giving nature will be sorely missed. Shannon is survived by her loving mother, Carole Tarnow King, brothers Mark and Rusty (Cyndi), sister Melinda Cashin (Greg), her beloved nieces and nephews Peyton and J.R. King, Steven, Alexandra , and Mark Cashin, Uncles Paul, Don and Jerry (Kathleen) Tarnow, Aunts Polly Tarnow, Nancy Read (Alan) and Martha Jean Ball (Jim) and her Godson Will Neely, plus several devoted cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Mark E. King, her Uncle Tommy Tarnow as well as her maternal and paternal grandparents. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 509 North Marion Street, Tampa, Florida 33602 on 23, 2014, 10:00A.M. The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude for the compassionate care given to Shannon at the Tampa General Hospital by the Critical ICU unit. In lieu of flowers for those who wish to make a contribution please send donations in memory of Shannon King to Roosevelt Elementary School, St. Andrews Episcopal Church Foundation or Tampa General Foundation. |
