Obituary: Eulogy John was the first born child of James and Blanche Kennedy from Belfast, Ireland where James was a carpenter in the shipyards. John had one brother and a sister who died at 6 months of age. His family moved to Canada in order to more easily enter the United States to find better job opportunities for his father. From Canada they moved to Chicago, Illinois because jobs were plentiful in the large hotels in downtown Chicago. There his father worked as a finishing carpenter. John saved as a boy to buy his mother a radio. She cherished this gift from John. She loved music, radio programs and Moody radio. His father was in the carpenters union and met another man who had emigrated from England with his family. This man was Johns future father-in-law. The two men became friends and their families got together when the children were young. Their wives missed their families and homes overseas and met together to vacation at the lake. John was very shy but he was honest and a hard worker. He was even in his disposition from one day to the next. His parents became Christians and took him to church and he became involved in a School class with 7 other boys. He couldn say exactly when, but over time he came to know Christ as his savior. He had several jobs and got a chauffeurs license. His first car was a Model T Ford which he said could be repaired with bailing wire and a pair of pliers. His School teacher helped him find a job in the Tool and Die trade where he learned on the job. As teenagers John and Marion met again and began dating. Their first date was to the Worlds Fair in Chicago. Marion was the only woman he ever dated. 4 ½ years they were married on 5, 1938 with Johns brother and Marions sister standing up in the wedding. had three girls and lived in a house in Forest Glen in the Northwest side of Chicago. attended the Forest Glen Baptist Church in the neighborhood and were active in many roles including the choir, School and the Awana program. John went into business for himself and started by doing his work in the basement of their house. Later he built his own building; half of it for his shop and the other side to rent. He worked for one customer who supplied him with all the work he needed for 40 years. His name was Mr.Triber. Mr. Triber was like a father to John. When the pressures and stress from owning his business made John down in spirit Mr. Triber suggested that he go to Florida to rest. Their first trip, as he suggested, was to Pompano Beach, Florida. He enjoyed the warm weather and found the trip enjoyable and restful. eventually went to Florida each year. When the East Coast was getting crowded they went to Sarasota at the suggestion of Mr. Triber. On their first trip there the weather was cold. John said, lets just drive south until the weather is in the 80s. stopped in Naples, Florida. Marions brother and his wife joined them on these trips and they both invested in property in Vanderbuilt Beach and Naples Park. built a duplex which they rented one side and used the other to vacation yearly. A few years later he retired and sold his business and building in Chicago. built a new home on Egret Avenue in Vanderbuilt Beach and moved permanently to Naples in 1978. became members of the First Baptist Church of Naples and helped with many activities to further the Word of God just as they had at Forest Glen in Chicago. In his life John had served in the church as a Deacon, Usher and worked on the Counting Committee. John was meticulous with his work whether Tool and Die or his hobbies. Over the years he collected stamps, collected coins and created stain glass lamps and toys. He raised a variety of plants, developed new varieties of hibiscus and attended the Hibiscus Society meetings. He built a Grandmothers clock and attended computer classes. He attended investment classes and managed his own investments and finally spent his time creating post cards and cards for Marion who sent many to all she knew. He loved to walk the beach and they took daily 3-4 mile walks. He loved the Lord and team taught a 4th grade School Class with Marion at the 1st Baptist Church in Naples Florida. He also helped Marion in the Awana program at the church. When the church built the school he helped deserving children who were in financial need to attend the school to get a good education. He also helped children in the family with financial assistance with education. He will be missed by all of the people he touched. Expressions of sympathy can be made by donating to the First Baptist Academy Scholarship Fund in Johns name. This is the school at the First Baptist Church where he helped students who struggled financially to receive a Christian education. . |
