Obituary: Michael Karl Kalphat was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on 6, 1937, and passed away on , 26, 2014. He was the son of Henry Michael Kalphat and Lucille Khaleel. He attended Wolmers Boys School also in Jamaica. He was very proud of having been in business with his father with Caribbean Shoe Factory where, at a young age, he traveled to Germany and England to purchase all the manufacturing equipment for the factory. He learned shoe design and manufacture in Lynn, Massachusetts. Later he became a sales and production manager at Caribbean Metal Products. In 1962, a fortuitous chance of fate would change his life forever. On a trip from Jamaica, Michael met Maria Beatriz on a double blind date. With his sisters approval, he proposed to Maria and they married that 1962 within 4 months of their first date. He was proud of the fact the their first kiss was when he put the engagement ring on her finger. That first year of his marriage saw an additional 2 Major Life events for Michael-- not only the death of his beloved father which devastated Michael, but the birth of his first daughter Henriet Michelle 9 months later whom he named after his father. Exactly one year and one week later was the subsequent birth of his second daughter Jackie followed by his third daughter Natalie a year and 7 weeks after that! All 3 were born in his land of Jamaica. Perhaps because of that and to be closer to his mother, Michael made another life altering decision to move his family to the states. moving his family to Miami in 1968, Caroline- his 4th and last daughter-- was born. With 4 young children (all under the age of 6) and a VERY young wife, Michael realized quite early on that a working day job would not be enough to further himself and his family in this country. Having no college degree at the time, Michael began the challenging journey of attending college at night to earn his Bachelors degree Accounting and eventually continuing on to earn his Masters in Business Administration at Barry University and his C.P.A certification. He accomplished all this while working full time as a Sales Manager at Endure Products and supporting his sizeable family. On the family side, this made things much easier by the fact that as the only male in an all female traditional household, he ruled with absolute authority-- no questions asked. The fact that his daughters weren dating yet really helped! He eventually became a stock broker with Paine Weber; then a Real Estate Broker, and eventually, a self-employed C.P.A. For a period of 5 years in the 80s, he taught accounting courses at Barry University, a job he truly loved. He retired from private practice in 2012. In the intervening years, Michaels 3 eldest daughters married and bestowed upon him first born male grandchildren for his blessing and enjoyment. He was predeceased by his parents and by his eldest grandson, Joshua Kalphat-Lopez. He is survived by wife Maria, daughters, Michelle (Will Gregory), Jacqueline Losego (Clinton), Natalie Kalphat-Sills (Greg Sills), and Caroline Kalphat; grandchildren, Danielle Kalphat-Lopez, Elias Losego, Michael Kalphat-Lopez, Jacob Losego, Kathleen Losego, Katya Fulford, Samuel Kalphat-McDaniel, and Jedidiah Kalphat-McDaniel. Sisters Carole Hadeed (Russell), and Joan Mahfood. Although MIchael seemed all business most of the time, he would regularly enjoy some of his favorite pastimes such as golf, bird shooting, and poker with his Jamaican buddies. Michael was known and will be remembered for being a strict father (and husband); the poster boy for the economical use of financial resources; and a passionate promoter of physical fitness. He was a strong, wise, ethical and honest man. A good husband, beloved father, and a loyal friend. No matter what life put his way, Michael always knew and accepted that it was God's will. Dads favorite and often time quoted words of wisdom to his daughters were: If you hoot with the owls, you can't soar with the eagles. Those who don't listen, will feel --that seemed his most often repeated one! Early to bed, early to rise, makes you healthy, wealthy and wise As daughters it was easy to respect Dads leadership, because he always practiced what he preached. He walked the walk and will continue to into eternity. |
