Obituary: Reverend Thomas Duncan Carroll age 87, of Stockton, California died , 5, 2013 from heart-related conditions. His funeral was held at noon on , 16, 2013 at DeYoung Memorial Chapel in Stockton, California. Tom was born on 1, 1925 in his parents home in San Jose, California. He was the second son of Thomas Wesley (a Plymouth Brethren evangelist) and Marion Banford Carroll. He is preceeded in death by his parents, brother Donald Wesley Carroll and niece Nanette McKay. He is survived by his brother Wallace Hector Carroll, age 91, sister Marianne Grace Carroll (Nan McKay), age 85, and his beloved wife of 32 years, Sylvia Roze Carroll and 5 children, Thomas Wesley Carroll, Elizabeth Grace Carroll, Janette Esther Carroll, Rebecca Dawn (Carroll) Franklin, and Judith Christine Carroll, and 6 grandchildren, Rebecca, Michaela, Thomas (Jack), Joseph, Gaelan, and Virginia (Nia). Tom attended a high school in San Jose but later moved to Castro Valley where he attended Castlemont High School. Like his grandfather before him, Tom was a serious and gifted athlete. He broke records in track and field events in the pole vault, gaining recognition by many, including the press who wrote about his accomplishments. Among his many competitions, Tom won a gold medal in the 1948 Far Western Conference in California. In college he was an avid swimmer, competing in the breaststroke. Although he was positioned for Olympic game trials in pole vaulting, Tom was also a lover of Christ and turned his focus away from athleticism to become an evangelist like his father in the Plymouth Brethren, sharing the Bible and Christ with people. It was through a Youth For Christ event in 1955 that he met and married Janice Joan Hayes and eventually fathered 5 children. He evangelized for one year in Goleta, California, another year in San Luis Obispo, and was then invited to evangelize in Toronto, Canada where he moved his family for 2 years. Upon their return to the states they settled in Richmond, California where he continued to evangelize in multiple churches. Tom loved the Lord and he understood the power of prayer. He was open to evaluating various forms of prayer because he believed a relationship with Christ was centered in prayer. He later also became an ordained minister by the Interdenominational Church. As Tom grew spiritually and as he became disenchanted with organized religion, he came to believe that God was not necessarily found in churches, but rather amongst the people. There is an ebb and flow of communion with one another and it is here that Christ lives. He often compared our relationship with one another and to God to a tree and the relationship it has to the sun, growing toward its invisible source of energy, firmly planting its roots into the ground to become anchored against the storms which are inevitably going to come. And by doing so, it grows big, providing a safe haven for the animals, food for nourishment, oxygen to breathe, beauty to look at..........the list goes on. He called it the circle of life. The tree cannot survive without the sun and the sun depends on the tree to help those around it. We are all connected and we were meant to be servants of The Lord. Before becoming an evangelist, Tom got his teachers degree from the University of Minnesota. his work in the churches, he later attended college in San Francisco, obtained his masters degree in psychology and taught in the public school system of Richmond for many years as a home-school teacher, helping neurologically handicapped children of all ages. These were physically, mentally and emotionally disturbed children and Mr. Carroll would serve as more than a teacher to those students in need. He also taught GED (general education degrees) in the evenings. Tom was an active Christian, putting his love into motion. In the 1960s, with racial tensions across the United States, Tom moved his family into a new neighborhood in Richmond that was designed to integrate the races where they participated in getting along with others and making different people their friends. Among his many interests and accomplishments, Tom started numerous Alcoholics Anonymous groups in the Bay Area, designed candy that was shaped like letters of the alphabet to help children learn the shapes of the alphabet, wrote a (unpublished) childrens book illustrating unconditional love of God and wrote many poems, articles, editorial commentaries, and sermon preparations. He had the mindset of an entrepreneur although his focus was not on money, but rather on the riches one would gain from having a relationship with Christ. Tom was a deep thinker who enjoyed contemplative prayer. He made it a daily practice to deeply pray, read the Bible, and think. He loved to analyze the Bible and find he true meaning in it. He also enjoyed reading thought-provoking books written by fellow Christians about their interpretations of the Scriptures. He was a very intelligent man. His family and those who knew him called him a prayer warrior for his faith in prayer. Tom loved people and made it a life-mission to help where he could. He continued reaching out to people by preaching the word of God through a local Stockton TV production called Cross Into Life Ministries, where his ongoing message was to find that relationship with Christ. Tom loved to preach and anyone who has heard him knows his booming voice and his fervor. And he was a great singer with a very strong voice. He was passionate about Christ and a relational God.......a God of love, who wants a relationship with His people. Tom knew his Bible well. He met Cambodians in Stockton and was invited numerous times to be a guest minister to local Cambodian churches, helping them understand the spirit of the Bible, which eventually led to two trips to their country to share the riches of this book. .
