Obituary: FILIPINA WIFE, MOTHER OF 3 PASSES AWAY PEACEFULLY By Jason Cardema Fe Custodio Cardema was a compassionate and caring woman who left her home country to find a new life in the United States. She was a wife to Romeo Cardema for 36 years; a mother to Jason, Andrew, and Christine Marie; and a grandmother to Francis (4) and Amelia (2). Fe was born in Manila, Philippines in 1941 to Juan Custodio (33, laborer), and Salome De La Cruz (24, housekeeper). She has an older sister, Ofelia (nicknamed Eya). A few years after Fe was born, their mother died in childbirth--along with who would have been her younger brother--and her father was killed during the second World War. Orphaned at a young age, Fe and Eya were adopted and raised by their fathers sister, Enriqueta Custodio (nicknamed Pin). She graduated from the University of the East in 1961 with a degree in business administration, and received her Certified Public Accountant credentials in 1964. Her first job was as an auditor for the Philippine Sugar Administration. She decided to apply to work in the US, and received a green card in 1973. She traveled to San Francisco with her friend Fely, and they became roommates. She was a secretary for the Bechtel Corporation until Pacific Bell offered her a position working on The Yellow Pages in 1974. She continued working for Pacific Bell (which later became AT&T, then SBC) as administrative support, and eventually moved from the San Francisco branch to San Ramon after she started her family. She retired in 2007 after 33 years of service. In 1974, she met Romeo Cardema in San Francisco at a party through a mutual friend (Juana Salud Garcia). Five years later, they both returned to the Philippines to get married at the Don Bosco Parish Church in Makati, Manila with a reception at the Manila Hotel. honeymooned in Baguio. , Fe and Romeo settled down in San Jose, California and had three kids--Jason, Andrew, and Christine Marie. She always thought about her family back in the Philippines--regularly sending them care packages full of American household supplies, toys, and clothes. She flew back to visit often, and funded the building of an apartment complex in Malate, Manila where her older sister Eya now lives. In 2010, Fes first grandchild was born--Francis Dodd Cardema, to Jason and Joanna Cardema. A few years later, her first granddaughter, Amelia, was born. Fe was a good grandmother, and spent a few months at Jasons house to help take care of the new baby. She returned again after Amelia turned one year old, but after a few weeks, Fe was complaining of back pains and a cough that would not go away. In the summer of 2014, doctors found that Fe had Stage 4 breast cancer, and the tumors had spread to her lungs and bones. hearing this news, Fe was not depressed, but thankful for having lived a good life. In the fall of 2014, she began the first round of chemotherapy--it seemed to be working, but after the second round of treatment (radiation therapy), she became weaker and weaker. Throughout this time, her loving husband Romeo cared for her, along with help from Andrew and Christine who had moved back home. Fe began hospice care the weekend after Mothers Day. Three weeks later, she died peacefully at her home on the afternoon of , 05 , surrounded by her immediate family--Romeo, Jason, Andrew, and Christine. She held the hands of Andrew and Christine as she took her last breaths. Fe was 73 years old. Her services will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose with a viewing on , 10 from 9:00 am -- 9:00 pm and the service on , 11 at 10:00 am in the Chapel of the Roses, with a burial to follow at 11:00 am. |
