Obituary: In Loving Memory of Carol Callaway Carol Champion Callaway, age 88, of Sun City, Palm Desert passed away peacefully 25, 2017 in Palm Desert. She was born on 11, 1929 to Donald Bartlett Champion and Frances Lundberg Champion in Los Angeles. She married Daniel Blayne Callaway on May 28, 1955 in Santa Monica. She worked for many years for the Los Angeles Rams and for Corpus Christi Church in Pacific Palisades, but her greatest commitment was to her family. She is survived by her five children: daughters Cathleen and Cynthia and sons, Daniel, John, and James; eight grandchildren Alec, Annie, Jacob, Michael, Glenn, Rachael, Benjamin, and Luce; a large extended family; and friends in Pacific Palisades and the desert. Obituary: Milton Callas, teacher and father of four, passed away 30 surrounded by his children at his home in Pacific Grove, where he had lived since 1962. He was born 8, 1921, into a Greek and Sicilian family in Pittsburg, California. His father, from Constantinople, was named Tom Callas, aka Anastasios Miltiades Kalegeropoulos. Milton served as a machine-gunner in the Marines during WWII and saw action on Eniwetok and the Pacific islands. He graduated from the of the Pacific (now UOP), where he met his wife, Constance. The story told is that they met on a bus in Stockton while he was on leave. In his long career as an English teacher at Salinas Union High School, he most enjoyed teaching Steinbeck and film classics including Dracula and Ben-Hur. He spent a lifetime struggling as a novelist, working with stories from his early years as a teacher at Soledad prison, and completed a book, Castle in the Sky, about his years working as a guide at Hearst Castle during summers and school vacations. He was an avid gardener and reader, a docent at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and volunteered at local historical adobes. He is survived by a sister, Barbara Allenbaugh of Benicia, and two sons and a daughter: Brian Callas of Pacific Grove, Kendall Callas of San Francisco, and Lynette Callas Webber of Phoenix. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Constance, who died in 2013 after 67 years of marriage, and his eldest son, Craig, who passed away in 1978. She had five grandhcildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many others who called her "Grandma." Obituary: James Callas, more affectionately known as Jim, Dad, Papou, and Uncle Jim to those who knew him best, passed away , 30, 2015 after 91 vibrant years of life. The son of Greek immigrants, Jim was born of 1923 in the City of Los Angeles. Though raised with deep ties to his Hellenic roots, he was a proud first-generation American and served as a B-29 top ball turret gunner in World War II. Upon his return to the U.S., he moved to the Antelope Valley where he raised his family and opened a local market with his brothers Nick and John, under the Callas name. Jim fulfilled his lifelong dream to be close to the ocean, moving to San Diego at the ripe young age of 89. Jims family remembers him fondly as a man who could make friends wherever he went. He never failed to captivate a room and make cheeks blush from his delightful and, at times, irreverent humor. Jim often quoted Satchel Page, Never look back. Someone may be gaining on you. Just don stumble. He was a man of determination, a man of vigor, and a man of many words. But more than anything, he was a man who lived life heartily and without regrets. So to that, we pour out a little scotch and toast to Jim the way he would for us \ with a broad smile and a big pat on the back. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Elene Callas, son, George, his wife Denise Callas of Rancho Santa Fe, and their daughters, Nicole and Kelly Callas, and daughter, Barbara Callas, her husband, Paul R. Gurian of Pacific Palisades, and their daughters, Alegra and Camile Callas Gurian. James sole surviving sibling is brother Nicholas George Callas, 95, currently of Oak Park, California. Sisters-in-law, Martha Tavoularis Callas and Thayus Rojo. He was loved and will be missed. The rights of the Greek Orthodox Church will be given at a private family service. |
