Obituary: Writing a eulogy is neither fun, nor easy. When I started writing my mothers four months ago, I wrote about her strength and the problems she had to overcome. My wife Lynne pointed out that I had lost the Anne who was playful, teasing, and simply fun. So I wrote a new eulogy. With my dad, I was determined to not repeat the mistake. Lynne looked at it, and then said she thought some parts of Joe were missing. I reassured her that I planned to add them - after all, it was only 5 pages long at that point! The next morning, the day my father later died, Sabine Maresco, one of the Chaplains at Providence, was praying with us at Joes bedside. Over the days in the hospital we had talked at length with her about Joes life. In her prayers, she said we offer thanks for the many peoples lives made better because Joe walked among them. It hit me. I was still writing about where and what, not about the core of Joes life: family, service, concern, compassion, and a strong sense of humor. Time to start again! My dad Joe was born 86 years ago in Chicago. He was the middle of three children, with an older sister and a younger brother. Life was difficult for his family, particularly during the depression. His father had several chronic illnesses and had difficulty holding down a steady job. Dad also had some health issues, including problems with his left arm that left him unable to straighten it. At age 8, out of necessity, he worked on a horse-drawn ice delivery truck. To help the family, he left high school after two years and went to work for the Art Publishing Corporation, the biggest distributor of decorative mirrors and prints in the country. By age eighteen he ran the shipping department, with twenty-two employees. There he met Anne Wojnarowski, who worked in the mirror department. Her forelady was Joes mom. That meeting began a 68-year relationship, interrupted by the war, but crowned by a 62-year marriage. At age 19, in 1943, my dad enlisted in the army. That began two years that altered his life forever. From Normandy to his final wound in Germany in of 1945, my dad managed to be in the thick of the worst fighting. One battle, well known to military historians, but largely unknown to the general public, was the battle for Mortain. In many ways, it was where he came of age. In a surprise attack, four German armored divisions supported by infantry units attacked his division. His battalion was surrounded by German forces for six days, cut off from supply lines. In those six days, Joe emerged as a leader, commanding a key roadblock that was repeatedly attacked. He repeatedly infiltrated enemy lines to recover airdropped medicine and supplies, receiving the Silver and Bronze stars for his bravery during the battle. In the aftermath of the battle, his lifelong sense of rebellion, lack of respect for mindless bureaucracy, and compassion for his comrades also came to the fore, revealed, as it often was, in a humorous way. what became know as The Lost Battalion was relieved by counterattacks, they were pulled into a rear area for rest, re-supply, and replacement of lost personnel. As one of the senior surviving NCOs, dad was given the task of leading the men in morning calisthenics after reveille. He was also to tell them of the limitations on their R & R. To say that he thought this was all brass-hat BS imposed on exhausted troops is an understatement. So . . . he had them awakened by the bugler at 7:00 AM, a very un-army time. Then, having them lie on their backs, he led them in the exercises. Raising each arm in turn, they bent and straightened their index finger 10 times. This was followed by reading the restrictions on R & R: The town 2 kilometers away was restricted, Officers Only. The nearest enlisted R & R town was about 12 kilometers away, and no transportation was available. Joe then turned away from the men and started walking towards the woods on the side of the men opposite the road to the town. As he did so, he loudly ordered, I don want to see any of you trying to sneak into the Officers town. Ignoring the pitter-patter of GI boots running in the opposite direction. So . . . he was reduced in rank, not for the last time. My dad was wounded 5 times, three times seriously enough to warrant awarding a Purple Heart. His mother received reassuring telegrams about those three. We regret to inform you that your son was slightly wounded . . . . Slightly wounded. A hole the size of his fist blown in his back by a mortar shell. Shot in the head while leading an attack. Machine gun bullets shattering the bones in his right hand and right elbow, the little finger of the hand amputated. That last wound changed his life, and brought out the inner strength that carried him through the rest of his life. Told he would never be able to do a physical job again, that he would never have useful dexterity in his hand, he approached his rehab like it was as much a battle for his life as anything in combat. And as he fought the new foe that his body had become, he became an unofficial morale officer for other wounded men at Wakeman General Hospital in Indiana. He would talk to them and encourage them to not give up, to struggle to improve and recover. Given what the doctors said, he made the only logical move - he applied for and talked his way into a job as a letter carrier. This was 1947. No carts to pull, no park and loop where you only carry a few handfuls of mail at a time. continued... |

Obituary: Anne Zaraza, 86, died at Portland Adventist Hospital shortly before midnight on 5th, as a result of Congestive Heart Failure and kidney failure. Born in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Katarzyna and Jan Wojnarowski, immigrants from the Zywiec region of Poland. Anne married Joseph Zaraza on 2nd, 1947, living most of her life in Chicago. From 1963 to 1975 she managed a card and gift shop, which allowed her to share her love of crafts with others. She used her artistry to brighten the lives of many through the gifts she created and distributed to family, orphanages, and nursing care facilities in the area. In 1998 she and Joseph moved to Oregon, initially living in Gresham and belonged to St. Therese parish. In 2005 they moved to St Margarets Villa, where they lived until health considerations necessitated their move to St. Anthonys Village Assisted Living facility in of 2009. Anne is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph, her son Ronald and his wife, Lynne Wehrman, and her grandson Derek and his wife, Jennifer Lanning. A Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am, , 12, 2010 in St. Anthonys Catholic Church, 3618 SE 79th Ave, Portland. Remembrances to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. EULOGY: While I was choosing pictures for my moms online memorial, I was shocked to see how quickly she changed in a short time these last few years. Realizing that most of you here have only know her a short time, or only met her a few times, I thought I would try to give you a broader image of the woman whose transition to eternal life we celebrate today. Anne was the middle child of 5 born to two Polish immigrants living in Chicago. Born in 1923, she was to experience the Great Depression as a member of a large, blue-collar family - an experience that shaped her attitudes for the rest of her life. Her mother, only 4 8 tall, was the strength of the family, nurturing and providing the security. Her father was what we would now call a high functioning alcoholic. This brought even more insecurity and fear into Annes life, with sometimes debilitating effects later in life. It also developed in her strength and determination that matched her mothers and kept her going through difficulties, her own and her familys, later in life. That may also have been what produced in her a very special characteristic. In Native American cultures, the coyote is seen as the trickster - playful, rather than malicious, but always playing practical jokes and letting a little air out those a little too full of themselves. Anne was clearly a Polish coyote. From age 5 or 6 until the last few weeks of her life, a twinkle would appear in her eyes as she would tease someone. She couldn resist it. No one was immune. When she worked at Arts Publishing in Chicago, where she met my dad, she constantly teased her forelady, as they were called then. Her forelady, Martha, who was Joes mom! That teasing went on for more than 50 years. Family, friends, a doctor, or the waitress at a restaurant, all were suitable targets for a gentle nudge, a clever trick. To the rest of the world, Anne seemed to be a somewhat reserved, dignified, and always appropriate lady. But, like the doctor who, during her hospitalization in , told her she had to stay at least one more day, never realizing shed stuck her tongue out at him as he turned and left, most never knew the Anne who loved fun, playing tricks, and just generally stirring things up. That playfulness marked every aspect of her life. It was probably what made her so good dealing with kids. As I watched her playing with my son Derek, making up stories and games, getting down on the floor with him, my mind went back to the memories of her doing the same thing with me. All of my cousins had the same experience, and continued to have a very different relationship with her than with their other aunts and uncles. She was always the big kid in the group, with the playful joy of life. She, like my dad, was also a natural teacher. I was sick a lot in first and second grade. Extreme tonsillitis and every common childhood illness crammed into 20 months. Somehow, I never fell behind in school. That was because, when Id be home in bed, my mom always would ask me what I was studying, and would go to school to get worksheets and assignments. When I was in second grade, I missed three days when the class was learning borrowing in subtraction. My mom hadn gone in that time, but decided it was time I learned it, so she taught me. When I returned, the teacher gave the class a test on it and told me I didn have to do it. I said I would try. Out of 63 kids, only 3 passed the test. I got a perfect score. The teacher thought I was a math genius. I never told her I had a better teacher. Whatever she was doing, whether crafts , math, or writing, she had a knack for teaching others to do it. Doing craftwork was a lifelong passion with her, ranging from making plastic artificial flowers long before they were sold in stores, through a period where her kitchen doubled as a candle factory, then making hundreds of Christmas ornaments (most of which she gave away), through every imaginable craft. Every holiday there were hand-made gifts from Anne. Those crafts were an expression of her creativity, but also a way of reaching out and helping others. For years, always at Easter, but often at Thanksgiving and Christmas as well, my mom would plan a project. She would make hundreds of woven plastic Christmas gifts, or Easter baskets, continued... |
