Obituary: Nicholas J. Zappia, a resident of Somers formerly of Yonkers and Surf City, N.J. died 20, 2011 at his residence. He was 84 years old. He was born on 23, 1927 to Luigi and Angela Femia Zappia in Yonkers where he was raised and educated. He studied technical electricity in Saunders Trade and Technical School where he graduated in 1945. Mr. Zappia was an electrician in Yonkers from 1966 to 1989 when he retired. Previously, he was a business owner of the Radio in Yonkers from 1950 to 1966. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local 3 in Flushing, N.Y. from 1966 to 1989. Mr. Zappia served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Brant Beach, N.J. and was a member of the Ocean Acres Country Club and the Pine Shores Art Association both in N.J. He enjoyed fishing, boating, woodworking and golf. He was an avid golfer who shot his age into his 80s. He was also an artist, his many sketches, oil & watercolor paintings were exhibited at local art shows in N.J. On 18, 1959, he married Mary Mangan in St. Denis Church in Yonkers. Mrs. Zappia survives and lives in Somers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Nicholas Zappia of Boston, MA, three daughters, Jean Zappia of Yorktown Heights, Lynne Zappia of White Plains and Lisa Zappia Heanue of Somers and one sister, Antoinette Trapasso of Somers. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Ernest, Dominic and Anthony Zappia and one sister, Mary Zazza. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball on from 4-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on 24th at 9:30 AM. Cremation will follow at Ferncliff Crematory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Judes Childrens Hospital. |

Obituary: Frank J. Zappia Newark—Frank J. Zappia, 87, passed away on , 22, 2021 at Newark Wayne Community Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on , 4, 2021 at St. Michaels Catholic Church, 3 Holley Street in LYONS, NY. A private burial will take place at Newark . In lieu of flowers, memorials in Franks name may be made to St. Michaels Parish, 401 S. Main St., Newark, NY 14513. Frank was born in Newark, NY on 18, 1934, the son of the late Joseph Papa Joe and Rose Rechichi Zappia. Frank graduated from New High School in 1952 and from Alfred State University in 1954. He served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958. Frank (The Scorch) was a restauranteur for nearly 50 years, and he and his wife Patricia built and operated numerous establishments including The PeeWee Diner (1958 to 1962) and Zappias Restaurant in Newark, NY (1962 to 1987), Papa Joes in Sodus Point, NY (1982 to 1989), and The Corner Tavern in Newark, NY (1986 to 2007). Frank is survived by his wife of 59 years Patricia Pat Zappia; two sons Joseph (Marcia) Zappia and Andrew (Tanya) Zappia; four grandchildren Lauren, Joseph Nicholas, Peter and Giulia Zappia; and his sister Joyce Zappia. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Rose. |
