Obituary: DONALD KEITH ZUCK: OBITUARY

Donald Don Keith Zuck passed away peacefully 20th, 2015 of natural causes at the Twin Falls . He was 90 years old. Don was born 2, 1924 in Kimberly the only child of Leslie J. and Ida Mae Zuck. Don met and married Betty Gambrel in 1947 at St. Edwards Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by Betty in 2009. had been married for 62 years. He is survived by his sons Donald Anthony, David Jon and daughter Diane (Zuck) Fuller, Daughters in law Donna (Obendorf) Zuck, Mary Mundell, and son-in-law, Michael Fuller, and grandsons Christopher and Daniel Zuck.

As a young man, Don was called to serve his country during WWII in the Army from 1943-1946. Dons training included basic medical training, basic auto mechanics, aquatics and life-saving instructor. His service took him overseas to work in a MASH unit where he served in many places including Hollandia Dutch East Indies, New Guinea, Northern Luzon Phillipeans and Japan occupied islands of Kobe and Honshu. He saw combat as well as working as a medic. Upon returning to America, he was suffering from severe Malaria and a broken back from falling down a well. He did not seek nor receive the Purple Heart. Interestingly, he and his father both served in the Army at the same time. actually met at a state side base for a brief visit.

Don worked from 1946 to 1978 as the purchasing agent and material control specialist for Detweiler Bros., Inc. One of the jobs he was responsible for included all the plumbing for the addition and remodel of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Don served and volunteered for numerous organizations. He served the Lions Club as the longest member from 1957 receiving an award for length of service in of 2010. He also received the highest award available from the Lions Club, the Melvin Jones Fellow award in of 1988. The Lions Club is well known for their devotion to eyesight and Don personally delivered corneas to hospitals for transplants coordinated by Lions Club. His other award was the Hallock-Wehmann award for outstanding and dedicated service as District Governor.

Well known for his devotion to conservation, Don was heavily involved with the Idaho Wildlife Conservation who awarded him the Lifetime of Conservation Award in 1991. In 2012 he received from the Idaho Fish and Game a Caught in the Act of Doing Good award. Don was once the head of the Citizens Against Poaching.

Don as an individual contacted and convinced Idaho Fish and Game to purchase islands in the Snake River for conservation and to allow access to hunting. Those islands are still utilized by hunters and fishermen today as a result of his insight.

Conservation was Dons highest priority to preserve areas for hunting and was responsible for beginning the Magic Valley Ducks Unlimited and was the first chairman.

He became a key player in the Rock Creek Park and Rock Creek clean up and restoration, and was the Twin Falls Parks and Recreation Commission Chair from 1966-1982.

An avid golfer, Don and Betty were long time members of Blue Lakes Country Club where he and friend Johnny Johnson won the Midnight league golf tournament.

Don and Betty were both involved in the Miss Twin Falls Pageant, where Don devoted time and coordination and Betty made many of the floral arrangements.

Dons extensive list of service and achievements also include, 1982 Conservationist of the Year award from the Idaho Wildlife Federation where he was the state president from 1977-1978. Also, Don was the Idaho Department of Fish and Game-Boise Idaho Wildlife Ambassador. He served on the BLM Burley district Wildlife Advisory Board and represented Idaho on the Governors Wildlife Conference as the regional representative as well as the Idaho voting delegate to the National Wildlife Federation in Washington, D.C. 1977-78.

Further offices were: Twin Falls Jaycees where he held all major offices,
Veterans of Foreign Wars-was President and held all major offices,
A member of the American Legion for 68 years, Received the Star Award from Boy Scouts and was Troop Leader and Assistant Scout Master and Institutional Representative, and finally a National Rifle Association Life Member.

Don was an avid outdoorsman, camper and fisherman who took many family outings to Stanley Lake. On an elk hunt, Don observed a massive black bear heading directly toward his good friend Bob Drexler who was completely unaware of the animal. As the bear kept advancing he felt his friends life to be in serious danger and at 400 yards shot the bear before it could attack his friend. The bear weighed in at 400 pounds. Don felt that being with family outdoors hunting or camping would keep children out of trouble.

He was a long time member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Twin Falls. A Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on , 12, 2015 at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 161 6th Ave. East with Fr. Mike St. Marie celebrating. Military honors will follow by the Magic Valley Honor Guard and Idaho National Guard Honor Guard followed by a celebration of life across the street at the Parish Hall.
