▰ Margaret Zalis

Died June 25, … More Information
Margaret Zalis, born December 5, 1930 left earthly home and passed through the Veil to her Eternal Home June 25, 2014 in Brunswick, Georgia. Margaret was 83. Tags: #Aunt #Marge #Miss #Brunswick #Gladys #York #Rockefeller #Rockette #Joseph #Maspeth #Queens #Polish #Space #Florida #Missiles #Bell #Margaret #Murray #Corporation #Scarlett #Georgia #Briggs #Holmes #Islands #Jekyll #Cumberland #Robert #Civil #Appomattox #Bobby #South #Brenda #Gale #Services #Frances #Catholic #Miller
Obituary: Margaret "Marge" G. Zalis, the at times fierce and fearless, independent but always loving matriarch of a small army of six sons and their extended families, died peacefully at her longtime home in Brunswick. She was 83.

Mrs. Zalis lived a multi-layered life, reflective in how she was addressed: "Marge" by her at times irreverent and challenging sons, Aunt Margaret by beloved nieces and nephews, "Grandma Marge" by her cautious grandchildren, "Mrs. Zalis" by business associates and even others who may have dared cross her, and Miss Margaret by many here in Brunswick. Through it all she was loved and beloved by most, if not all, but always remembered.

Margaret Gladys Briggs was born in New York City on 5, 1930. She was a former dancer and aspiring Rockefeller Rockette, who in 1951, as a stunningly beautiful woman, married the boy next door, Joseph Zalis, in Maspeth, Queens, a Polish neighborhood in New York.

In a few years, with the advent of the Space Age, they moved to Florida where Joseph worked guiding Missiles for Bell Laboratories, and Margaret "held down the fort" of a rapidly growing family while on the side, continued to give private ballet and tap dance lessons. Later, after returning to the New York area, they jointly owned and operated Murray American Corporation, an importer of radio quality quartz, minerals and gemstones. As always, as one of her sons would say, she was the "business brains behind any deal."

Mr. and Mrs. Zalis retired to the Scarlett House in Brunswick, where Margaret's family, had extensive deep, coastal Georgia roots. The Briggs (and Holmes) families were sea and river folk who extended back generations in the southern Sea Islands -- particularly Jekyll and Cumberland Island. One of Margaret's great-great uncles fought beside Robert E. Lee from the beginning of the Civil War to the surrender at Appomattox.

Margaret never surrendered -- no doubt to the dismay of some who may have crossed her -- and not even to a series of strokes over the past years that eventually took her life. One of her favorite nephews, Bobby Sobocienski, a retired New York City policeman who at one time headed the NYC S.W.A.T. team who had "seen it all, once called his Aunt Margaret, "the toughest lady I ever knew."

Margaret was just as well known for her love of sharing good food, (to enter Margaret's house was to be asked to sit at the table ), loyalty, generosity and hospitality -- qualities that easily suited her to life in the South.

She will be missed, but definitely not forgotten.

Margaret is survived by six sons and their wives, seven grandchildren, a great-grandaughter, and two special friends who devotedly took care of her and became the daughters she never had: Brenda Bradley and Gale Smith.

Services will be at Frances Xavier Catholic Church , 28 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be evening, 27, at Edo Miller 7-9 p.m.

Obituary: SALEH A. ZAKI, M.D., PH.D.
1935-2016
_________________________________

Saleh A. Zaki was a cherished father, husband, brother, uncle, colleague, physician and friend. Saleh Zaki, M.D., Ph.D. passed away on 17, 2016 at Emory Hospital.

Dr. Zaki was born in 1935 in Cairo, Egypt. He was a young intellectual, in a closed society and, despite the political consequences, he spoke his mind - often speaking and publishing his views in a subversive yet satirical fashion. He studied medicine and received his medical degree from the Cairo University Faculty of Medicine in 1959 and spent a year interning at Cairo University Hospital in 1960-1961.

He married a fellow medical student, Afaf, and shortly thereafter had a daughter. When he received a British Counsel scholarship to study and train in pathology at the University of Birmingham, England, he took his young family to Britain for four years. He was a pioneer in the study of Rheumatic Heart disease - utilizing electro-microscopy which was the state-of-the-art at that time. For his Ph.D. thesis, Dr. Zaki produced the definitive study on the subject. In of 1964, he was awarded his Ph.D. in pathology.

In 1965 he returned to Egypt where he and Afaf had a second daughter. He lectured in Pathology at the Asuit University Medical School. the 1967 six day war, the political situation in Egypt grew even more repressive. Yet he was undeterred in his public pronouncements. He called out government hypocrisy and propaganda, thereby placing him on an ever growing list of perceived government subversives. As the government was arresting and imprisoning its critics and his friends, Dr. Zaki took his small family and escaped from Egypt. He made his way to Yemen, under the guise of a family vacation. He had less than $10 in his pocket and was unable to take with him any family belongings. He recalls his dramatic escape from Egypt as the one time in his life that he knowingly violated the law (by fleeing the country illegally).

Dr. Zaki dreamed of immigrating to the United States of America, but first he had to flee Yemen, find a safe place to live and a job to support his family. He took a position as a Senior Tutor in Pathology at Queens University Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 1968-1969, Belfast was also a hot bed of violence. Dr. Zaki and his family applied for, and were granted, immigration to the United States. In 1969, the Zaki family settled in Atlanta, Georgia. He became an American citizen in 1976 - the year of the bicentennial.

He continued his pathology practice in the United States and in 1972 he received his certification from the American Board of Pathology. Although he enjoyed and excelled in surgical pathology, by chance and by necessity, Dr. Zaki worked most of his life in the field of forensic pathology. In 1973, he joined the Fulton Medical Examiners office and in 1976 he became the first individual in the State of Georgia to receive board certification in Forensic Pathology.

Dr. Zaki became the Chief Medical Examiner in Fulton in 1988. He was invited to take the position of Chief and initially accepted the position reluctantly. However, when he reflected on his life, he evinced a great pride at the accomplishments of his 10 year tenure as Chief Medical Examiner. As Chief, Dr. Zaki led the effort to create model forensic science institutions in Fulton and throughout 155 counties in the State of Georgia. Dr. Zaki forged partnerships with state and local agencies and spearheaded legislative reforms, including particularly the Georgia Death Investigation Act. He altered the nature of medical examiner services from a mere arm of law enforcement into a diverse team of medical and professional specialists, including anthropologists, dentists, nurses, EMTs and law enforcement. Dr. Zaki advocated for, and instituted, forensic training programs and lead the effort to fund and create a state of the art Medical Examiners facility -the new Medical Examiners building now bears his name. In addition, he championed his staff and fought to provide competitive compensation for the medical examiner professionals. Finally, he continued to teach - by serving as a lecturer and/or faculty member at Emory University, University of Calgary, Alberta Canada, University of Alabama and Morehouse School of Medicine.

He retired in 1998 with plans to pursue his medical interest in surgical pathology, build a lake house and learn to fish. But he never had that chance because his wife Afaf was diagnosed with cancer and he spent the following four years caring for her and loving her. In between her multiple surgeries and chemotherapies, he tried to make her dreams come true. Despite the great sadness of these years, he considered caring for Afaf his greatest accomplishment.

Afafs death, Dr. Zaki was inconsolable. He was, however, blessed with another love. He remarried a Russian physician named Elena. Dr. Zaki and Elena were married for 10 years and traveled the world together.

Dr. Zaki was surrounded by his family and friends when he passed. He is survived by his wife Elena, his two daughters, his brother and many remarkable friends who more like his extended family.

Dr. Zakis family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the WINSHIP CANCER INSTITUTE OF EMORY UNIVERSITY, 1365 Clifton Road, N.E., Building C, Atlanta, Georgia 30322 and/or the ALIF INSTITUTE, 3288 Marjan Drive, Atlanta, Georgia 30340. The family will receive friends , 21, 2016 from noon until 1 at Pattersons Spring Hill Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 in the Pattersons chapel, entombment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.

Obituary: Deppie Zakas died peacefully at her home on 22, 2015. She leaves behind her beloved husband of over 60 years, Lou; her son Dennis and daughter-in-law Martie, whom she loved as a daughter, and her four wonderful grandchildren: Virginia, Page, Ned and Cabell.

Deppie was born in Tampa, Florida on 5, 1932, the daughter of the late Mary and Mathew Matheson. She met Lou on the steps of the Greek Orthodox Church in Atlanta, having just arrived for her freshman year at Agnes Scott . Deppie and Lou were married in Tarpon Springs, Florida on 20, 1954. a brief career as a schoolteacher, Deppie became a stay-at-home Mom, caring for her son Dennis. She was an avid reader, consuming everything from serious literature to trashy mystery novels. She also excelled at bridge and crossword puzzles. Deppie was an accomplished artist. Her beautiful paintings contributed to the relaxed elegance of her home, which she personally decorated. She was a gracious hostess, entertaining countless guests, including numerous visiting dignitaries, on many occasions, in connection with the Centennial Olympic Games.

Although Lou distracted her from her studies at Agnes Scott, Deppie always believed in the value of education. Concerned about Dennis apparent loss of focus at his elementary school, Deppie researched best private schools in Atlanta and determined that Westminster was the best. Not much of a morning person, Deppie nevertheless drove Dennis 16 miles each way, usually dressed in a house robe, in stark contrast with her usual, incredibly elegant and stylish appearance. Lou loved to provide her with beautiful jewelry, clothes, bags, furs and shoes, all of which made her quite happy. Deppie and Lou enjoyed travel, whether visiting their relatives in Greece, Lottie and Tony Stefanis in Tokyo, or Dennis and Martie in New York, or circling the globe in cruise ships.

Deppie was an active member of Atlantas Greek community, having served as a school teacher and participated in organizations such as the Daughters of Penelope. Deppies greatest joys were her husband Lou, her son Dennis, and his family. Reflecting her incredible sense of whimsy, she called herself Granny, when, as Page and Virginia noted, she was the farthest thing from a traditional granny. Deppie was preceded in death by her parents, her Uncle George and Aunt Fannie Kotsoyianis, and her beloved sisters, Sandra Pefinis and Charlotte Demetriades. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Charles Pefinis and George Demetriades, in addition to many wonderful nieces and nephews. The family is incredibly grateful for the wonderful care that she received from her three very special caregivers: Maria Granger, Musu George and Annie Jones, as well as Cicely Ventura.

A visitation will be held night, 25, from 6 until 8 o'clock at H. M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill, 1020 Spring Street, NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30309, Phone: 404-876-1022. The funeral will be held on , 26, at 11 o'clock at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation on Clairmont Road, followed by a graveside service at Greenwood . In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Atlanta History to benefit the care of the Centennial Olympic Games Collection, 130 West Paces Ferry Rd., Atlanta, GA 30305.
