Obituary: Zdzislaw (Jack) W. Zajaczkowski of Inverness, Florida died on , 17, 2010 at Citrus Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Jack and his wife Emily lived in Paramus, New Jersey prior to their relocation to Florida. Jack was born in Lodz, Poland on , 9, 1928. He was the only son of Wladyslaw and Zofia Zajaczkowski. The family moved to Warsaw when he was five. Jack was 11, when Poland was attacked by the Germans. Jack remembered how his father, a veteran of WWI had been summoned to defend Poland. At age 12, Jack was wounded by shrapnel in his legs. During the 44 uprising, he was captured and sent to a work camp in Hanover, Germany. Upon release by the American Forces, he was told they could go back to Poland. The group met refugees returning to the American lines. The Russian Army was coming towards them and relieving the refugees of their shoes, clothing and whatever they had. The group returned to the American Sector, where they were warmly greeted. At age 17, he went to work for the Third Zone, American Graves Registration Command, European Theater Area, U.S. Army as a PFC. He worked on a crane burying American G.I.s in Belgium, France and Luxemburg. also, guarded German prisoners. A Catholic charity from New York City came to their camp and signed up 300 Polish young men to come to the States. But before they came, they took part in loading the planes during the Berlin Airlift. arrived on Long Island to work on the farms. a year of their contract, they were able to go on their won but, were told if a war broke out, they would be taken back in the U.S. Army. Jack returned to the Army in 1951 and was shipped back to Germany. He served with the 43rd Infrantry Division, artillery unit on the German-Soviet border. his discharge from the Army, he married and continued his education. His last place of employment was Material Research Corporation in Orangeburg, New York as a Senior Designer of precision equipment for the computer industry. Jacks parents are both deceased. He never saw his parents after 1944. Survivors include his wife, Emily Zajaczkowski of 57 years, two children who they adopted from Poland; Joseph of Paramus, New Jersey and Maria from Hackensack, New Jersey; three grandchildren, Michael and Katie Zoch and Haley Mysliwiec. Jack was a member of the following organizations; American Legion Post #0077 in Inverness, Florida, American Legion of Florida, Citrus Veterans Coalition, Share Club, Life Member of the Knights of Columbus #6168 of Beverly Hills, Florida, Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club, Citrus Hills Civic Association and Clearview Estates Property Association, all in Florida. He was a lifetime member of the N.R.A., 43rd Infrantry Division Veterans Association of Hartford, CT, a member of the V.F.W. Memorial Post #6699 of Paramus, N.J., a life member of the D.A.V. Northern Valley Chapter #32 of Bergenfield, N.J. and the Loyal Order of Moose in Lodi, N.J. He was also, a Director and President of the Polish American Club of North Jersey Inc., a member of the Kosciuszko Foundation in NY City, a member of the Polish Childrens Heartline Inc. Jack was a parishioner of St. Scholastic R.C. Church in Lecanto, FL, where he served as an usher. services will be held in New Jersey. are being made by Fero of Beverly Hills, FL. Church service with Father Thaddeus Stasik will take place at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on Patterson Avenue in Wallington, NJ. Entombment follows at St. Joseph Chapel Mausoleum in Hackensack, NJ. In memory of Jack, donations may be made to Polish Childrens Heartline Inc., 177 Broadway, Clark, N.J. 07066.
