Obituary: Frank Michio Yatsu, aged 79, died peacefully in his home on , 9, 2012 in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Michiko, of 56 years, and their daughter, Carolyn Libby Elizabeth Hsu and her husband, Benjamin Hsu; their grandchildren, Katie and Sophia Hsu. His older brother, Lawrence Yatsu of New Orleans, Louisiana, also survives Frank. Frank was born on 28, 1932 in Los Angeles, California to Frank K. and Iwao Yatsu. He was the youngest of four children. Then in the mid 1940s, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio after the internment camps of World War II were disbanded. Franks biggest break happened as a Boy Scout in Cleveland, Ohio. He received a full scholarship to the prestigious boarding school, Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. There at Andover, he quickly became popular with his gregarious sense of humor and his wit. He was even referred to as the walking dictionary. While he was there, he was elected President of the Student Council. He was also active in sports and was on the Varsity Wrestling team. graduating in 1951, Frank, because of his wrestling talents, was granted a full four-year scholarship to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. In his freshman year, he was awarded a championship trophy from the New England AAU. He graduated in 1955 with a major in English. That same year Frank and Michiko Yamane from Cleveland, Ohio were married on 10, 1955. He also started medical school at Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio that fall. He graduated in 1959 and took a year of residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. This step led to a two-year residency in Neurology at The Neurological Institute of New York (Columbia University). From 1965-1967, Frank was a Lieutenant Commander (Neurologist) for the United States Navy in Great Lakes, Illinois. serving for the United States Navy, Franks career as a Neurologist began flourishing. From 1967-1971 he was an Assistant Professor in the department of Neurology at the University of California Medical . In addition, from 1969-1973 he was the Chief of Neurology Service at the San Francisco General Hospital. In 1975 he was promoted to Chairman of Neurology at University of Oregon Sciences in Portland, Oregon. Frank was especially interested in stroke which continued throughout his entire career. During those years in San Francisco, Frank and Michiko welcomed their daughter, Carolyn Libby Elizabeth, in 1971. From 1969-1974, Frank was appointed as a Trustee of Brown University, the first Asian American in the history of the university. In 1982 the family moved to Houston, Texas where Frank was appointed Professor and Chairman of Neurology at University of Texas Science . He also had the opportunity to have two sabbaticals abroad in Oxford, England and Lausanne, Switzerland during his tenure. He was very active in stroke research and awareness as Chairman and following as Chairman Emeritus. Frank became Director of the World Organization and Treasurer of the World Stroke Organization from 2001-2004. Up until his untimely passing, he continued to be involved in patient care, colleague mentoring and international conferences. This past marked the fifth annual Frank Yatsu Day at University of Texas Science . On this day, the Neurology Department organizes a symposium on stroke related topics opened to the UT Medical School faculty and staff. The Yatsu family and the entire Neurology Department at UT hope this tradition continues. On a personal note, Frank was a supportive and loving husband, dad and grandfather. He had a love of learning, and he read multiple books at a time, not to mention his favorite newspaper, The New York Times. He was also the best emailer I know. As his daughter, I speak for many when I say that he was very good at keeping in touch. Relationships were very important to him, and he showed that through phone calling, emailing and dining out with friends. Frank loved all forms of the Arts, from symphony and opera performances to museum visits both locally and abroad. He could spout off interesting, likely unknown, facts about art, math, science or whatever and then in the next moment talk about his latest and most interesting travels or conferences he attended. His week would not be complete without dining out with Mich and having dim sum. Houston has their fair share of good restaurants, but Frank would vouch that Yank Sing in San Francisco is the best. He will be greatly missed. He has touched so many lives - both medically and socially - and will be forever remembered for his love and care of others and for the remarkable life he lived. In lieu of flowers, there are two funds set up in honor of Frank M. Yatsu. both represent Franks passion for education and medicine. If friends and family would like to donate, checks can be made payable to: 1). Trustees of Phillips Academy for the Frank M. Yatsu Scholarship Fund Phillips Academy 180 Main Street Andover, MA 01810 2). Annual Frank Yatsu Day Symposium Endowment c/o the Department of Neurology University of Texas Medical School 6431 Fannin Street, Suite 7.044 Houston, Texas 77030 |

Obituary: Benjamin Akira Yatsu, 15, was born in Austin Texas on 13th, 1995 and was the first born child of John and Becky Yatsu. Ben was a gorgeous "Buddha Baby" with a very good appetite! Bens arrival designated him as the first grandchild of Pat and Stan Briggs and the first grandson of Yoshi and Taku Yatsu. He was baptized at St. Davids Episcopal Church where he would later serve as an acolyte and where we will celebrate his life in memoriam. From early on Ben was a friendly soul. Making friends and being generous with others began in preschool in Miss Lauras class at St. Davids Episcopal School. He liked to help others with their problems even as a preschooler and was compassionate to his core. It was when he was in preschool that his parents were first told that Ben was an "out of the box" thinker and learner which later proved to be a very accurate description of Bens style. On 5, 1997, Ben welcomed his baby sister Katie and as the two got older began to be each others "partners in crime." Besides being Katies big brother, Ben enjoyed swimming, riding bikes, playing soccer and doing gymnastics at Crenshaws. Going to his grandparents lake house was one of his most favorite past times. He enjoyed water skiing and tubing from their boat with his friends. In elementary school Ben attended Highland Park Elementary where he had some fantastic teachers who nurtured his sweet spirit. He had many friends there especially his Cub Scout Den Pack 59. In Middle school Ben attended Kealing where he was able to take Japanese as his language. He took great pride in learning about his culture and heritage under Mr. Nishida. He traveled to Japan with his parents, sister and grandparents Yoshi and Taku, visiting with cousins and meeting his extensive family. A special person to Ben and his family at Kealing was Nancy Miloy, the guidance counselor who really clicked with Ben and guided him through the rough waters of middle school. We constantly referred to her as "his angel." While Ben was at Kealing he made some wonderful friends like Jefferson, Edward, Shraven, Stryker, Alex, Eduardo and so many others. He began his musical instruction on the piano with Ms. Southhall, and played trombone in the Kealing band. Ben took up Sitar lessons with Dr Amy Maciszewski who shared his love of the Beatles. He joined Boy Scout Troop 399 and had some great and unforgettable adventures not the least of which was a summer New Mexico trip trekking though newly fallen snow with his dad and friends!! He was able to go back to New Mexico under better conditions to trek Philmont Scout Ranch the next year. Under leadership of Mr. Marshall, Mr. Heinan and Mr. Mauro he rose to Life Scout rank which made Ben proud because his dad never progressed past First Class scout. Ben attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree 2010 in celebration of 100th Anniversary of Scouting in the US capping his scouting experience. He attended McCallum and Huntington Surrey High schools where he made many more friends with whom he enjoyed chilling at Zilker Park and Barton Springs with music and friends. All who knew Ben felt his joyous peaceful spirit. Ben is survived by his parents Becky and John, his sister, Katie, his grandparents Pat and Stan and Yoshihiko and Taku and his aunt, Grace Halamek and husband, Peter, his uncle, George, as well as his cousins, Stephanie and Christopher Halamek, as well as many other cousins. Most importantly, Bens spirit lives on through the donation of his organs to those in need. Like the 8 month old in need of a new liver and 26 year old in need of his strong and loving heart. Such that his spirit will continue to "smile and bless" those he encounters far longer than anyone could have imagined. As John Lennon wrote in Bens favorite song, "Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say that Im a dreamer. But, Im not the only one." Now, Ben you have become more than one. Spread your joy and peace to those you will continue to help grow in their lives. Special thanks to all of Bens friends including Shraven, Jeff, Xyla, Jaden,Terra, Julia, Lucius, Lacey, Rotem, Eduardo, Edward, Alex Lewis, Spencer, Eliza, Cooper, Ruby , Laura Cole, Mason and so many more for the friendship and love you gave Ben during his earthly lifetime. It means so much. Hes smiling now and forever. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six oclock until eight oclock in the evening on , the 15th of 2011, at Cook-Walden , 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. A Memorial Services will be conducted at one oclock in the afternoon on , the 16th of , at St. Davids Episcopal Church, 304 East 7th Street, Austin, Texas under the direction of Cook-Walden .
