Obituary: Hiroshi was born in Haiku Maui on 15, 1932, the last of eleven children by Tsuru and Shoki Yamauchi. His childhood was spent, barefoot and care-free under the guidance of his older brothers and sisters. graduating from the old Maui High School in 1950, to avoid being drafted, he enrolled at the University of Hawaii and through the ROTC program he went on to serve in Korea. He settled in the San Francisco Bay area working for the Ortho Chemical . There he met and married Judy, a chemist for the competing Shell Development in Emeryville. He then went back to school, earning a PhD at UC, Berkeley in 1968. He then accepted a position at the University of Hawaii, where he remained for over 30 years, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1999. While he was at UH, he was awarded two separate Fullbright Research Fellowships, the first to Kyoto University where he studied water pollution in Lake Biwa and the second to Tokyo University where he examined the Japanese rice policy. While in Japan he was given a top award from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (Nihon Gakujutsu Shinkokai) for his academic contributions. He was invited to numerous universities in many countries, such as China, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Korea, and other areas of the Pacific Basin. In recognition of his contribution to the US-Japan relationship, he was also nominated for an Imperial decoration award, but he declined to be considered because, at that time, Judy was working for the Japanese Consulate in Honolulu. Then in 2003, he and Judy moved to Portland to be near their daughter and granddaughter. Hroshi described himself as a day-dreamer with lofty goals and he often ended up trying to do seemingly impossible things. He especially liked to take on projects which no one else wanted to do \ especially if someone told him it was not a good idea. Hiroshi felt he was living under a lucky star. He would recount the number of times he was in near-fatal accidents or events from which he survived. And he was quick to take advantage of good fortune which often seemed to come his way. Despite all his accomplishments, he was a very modest person, never taking himself too seriously and rarely becoming upset over things. In fact, his wife Judy says that in 50 years of marriage, Hiroshi never once became angry with her. Hiroshis name means broad or wide, which fit him perfectly since he was extremely open-mindedness. He had no hang-ups and was completely non-judgmental of others. He accepted others as they were and he would sometimes even bring people he had just met home for dinner. So it is very appropriate that he has been given a new Buddhist name which means broad-minded which will surely serve him well in his new life. |

Obituary: Fritz Yaklich left all his cares behind when he left this world peacefully on 31, 2017. A Crested Butte native, Fritz was the son of Fred and Leola Yaklich, grandson of Phillip and Frances Yaklich and great grandson of Jacob and Marija Kochevar. As a child, he wandered wild and free as Crested Butte children do- riding horses, building snow caves in winter, imaginary highways to the outside world in Denny's sand pile and "forts" in Ruby Bend in the summer. He helped with the milk cows and with haying at the family homestead, now Meridian Lake development. He attended Crested Butte Schools, graduating as Valedictorian in l963 in a class of four- Jim, Bernice, Ora Lea and Fritz. For two of his school years, after the mine closed, he was the only student in his grade level. He played basketball, was on Student Council and the Yearbook. At that time in Crested Butte, if you wanted a team (or a yearbook) you had to be on it. He had fun in high school, tearing through the hills in the old army jeep and "hunting" at the dump with Paul, Freddy and Tony. graduation he attended the University of Colorado, enlisted in the army, later worked at Keystone Mine and eventually attended Forestry school in Oregon. Fritz later returned to Crested Butte as an adult, with two great loves in his life- acting and the outdoors. He was a superb athlete; climbing every peak in the valley, doing day hikes that lasted for 10 hours and riding his bike great distances over the highest mountain passes. He loved all of nature-animals, trees and the forests of Oregon and Colorado. He was a tireless champion for the environment. Fritz loved the gym and constantly challenged himself with weightlifting. He had success as an actor in movies (Joe Dirt, The Addams Family and others); in national commercials (for Zippo, Nike, Vitamin Water, Chevy and YK Vote); on stage he appeared in "Romeo and Juliet", “Midsummer Night’s Dream", and "The Cherry Orchard" for the Crested Butte Mountain Theater. He did stand-up comedy in Los Angeles as "The Atomic Comic". Fritz was a good and loyal friend. Tuck, Bill Wheeler, Steve Griggs and Igor were special friends in Crested Butte. He had a good and kind heart for those less fortunate than he and would spend an hour picking out the perfect card to make you happy or a gift for a grandchild. He was a thinker, a dreamer, a doer. His greatest gift was his amazingly bright mind. You just could not have a boring, small talk, conversation with Fritz; nor could you not laugh along with his sharp wit and word play. Ian remembers Words never dug ditches" and "drip city" (for rainy Portland) as two of Fritz' many gems. He wrote many challenging, thoughtful and humorous letters to the Crested Butte paper as "Fritz the Cat" or the "Atomic Comic". His greatest pride and joy were his sons: Zeb (Angie), Zach (now deceased), Ian (Nikki) and the grandkids (who called him "Timer) - Austin, Preston, Kesley, Aiden, Sophia and Brady. His friend and former wife, Margaret Horn, provided Fritz with friendship and support through his nine year battle with Leukemia. He appreciated and treasured Margaret; and she considers her greatest gift their sons and grandchildren who are his legacy in life. Fritz is also survived by sister Trudy, Mari (Jeff), Cindi (Dave) and nephew Collin; as well as beloved cousins, aunts, back-in-the-day Crested Butte friends and special California friends (Jeff, Dave and Terza). Fritz was a proud veteran; as he was; we are all grateful to the VA for nine years of outstanding care; as well as Pam and Bee and Kristen, who provided friendship and care in his final months. His sons' words best express our feelings: "Love you dad and thanks for the memories- for being one of the wildest, kindest and most fun dudes to ever walk the face of the planet. From King Crab fishing in the Bering Sea, Hard Rock Mining in Colorado, Being in the movies and on TV; logging and then replanting the same forests of the Pacific Northwest, you survived almost half of the deadliest jobs on the planet and survived longer than anyone else on the treatment you were on. You were larger than life. Your absence in our lives leaves a huge void that we will try to fill by telling the amazing stories that made up your life." Special thanks to Avamere Crestview of Portland, Signature and Hospice and the VA for his outstanding care over the course of his illness. |
