Obituary: Commander Cornelius Harrington “Skip” Yates III, USN (Retired) died 8 2016 from severe complications following a relatively minor medical procedure in at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Hospital, Columbia. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. , 16, 2016 at the VFW Post 280 located at 1509 Ashley Street, Columbia. Service for the celebration of Skip’s life follows at 6 p.m. at the same location. From a Columbia Tribune article published May 28, 2004, we learn that “As a Navy helicopter pilot in Vietnam, C.H. "Skip" Yates flew through enemy fire and over jungles, mountaintops and water to prevent downed pilots from becoming prisoners of war. "If they got shot down, they were going to be captured," he said. "You had to get to them within 30 minutes or they were gone." Yates rescued 11 airmen by the end of the Vietnam War. He escaped injury, but his helicopter was hit by gunfire several times, once leaving a hole the size of a football that he patched with duct tape. Yates wasn't interested in exchanging fire and used the machine gun attached to his aircraft as a last resort. "You can't be rescuing people and playing war games at the same time," he said. "That was someone else's job." Yates joined the Naval Reserves as a high school student in South Carolina. a failed attempt to get a chemical engineering degree and a gig as a bartender in Atlantic City, Yates returned to the military and completed flight school with plans to go to Vietnam. "I had a Hollywood vision of it," he said. flying 155 combat missions, Yates was less than enthusiastic about Operation End Sweep, an effort to neutralize mines along the North Vietnam coastline after the cease-fire. "It was a boring mission, slow and low. If there's anything an aviator hates, it's slow and low." What seemed boring would draw worldwide attention. On 9, 1973, Yates triggered the only mine detonated during Operation End Sweep using a sled-like device his helicopter dragged through the Haiphong Harbor. Until then, the North Vietnamese were reluctant to release prisoners because they weren't convinced U.S. forces were clearing mines, a condition of the peace treaty. The rest of the mines had self-neutralized without explosion. "The North Vietnamese didn't understand that," Yates said. "That one mine made a difference. That explosion essentially got our POWs home." A camera attached to the back of Yates' helicopter caught the blaze on film, and the picture made front-page news around the world. Yates received scant mention. For his contributions in Vietnam, he earned a handful of medals — "but they aren't high ones." Yates, who would spend three decades in the Navy, said praise never interested him. "It was my job," he said, "and I got flight pay." Yates recalled his participation in Vietnam with little emotion, taking long drags off a Salem between memories. He's been retired from the Navy for about 15 years but keeps his hair in a military buzz cut. He has no use for words like "hero," at least when talking about himself. "There were a lot of heroes," he said. "I'm not one of them." Eleven airmen might disagree.” Skip Yates was born 8, 1940 in Camden, SC to Cornelius Harrington Yates Jr and Katherine Lottie Etters Yates. He married three times to: Foye Thompson; Martha Bunch; and Sandra Jagger. He is survived by: his sister Sloane Kane of Lottsburg, VA; three sons Jeffrey Thomas Yates of Columbia, SC; LT Christopher Harrington Yates, USN, of Pensacola, FL and Jonathan Shepherd Yates of Rocheport, MO; grandchildren Aaron and Morgan Yates of Columbia, SC; nephews George Emery Biles of VA and Spencer Yates Biles of Maryland; great nieces/nephews Calle, Alec, Maisie and Stella Biles; and numerous Etters and Yates cousins scattered around the world. Highly respected for his piloting skills, Skip was known fleet-wide as an Aviator’s Aviator. He amassed well over 3000 flight hours, many of them as a combat helicopter pilot during three tours of duty in-country Vietnam and as a naval flight instructor. His duty assignments included: Director of Safety, Naval Air Systems Command; Deputy Director of Operations, Joint Electronic Warfare , San Antonio TX; Deputy Commander, HelTacWing ONE; Air Boss USS Guadalcanal (LPH-7); Wing Maintenance Officer, HelSeaConWing ONE; Maintenance Officer, HM-16; NATOPS Officer, HM-12; Head, Rotary Wing Section, NavSafeCen Accident Analysis; Flight Instructor VT-2 and HT-8; Combat SAR, HC-1 and HC-7; Vietnam '67, '68, and '69 CSAR; and '72 OPERATION ENDSWEEP minesweeping Haiphong harbor. Skip earned the following awards during his 30-year naval career: Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Air Medal (3 single/8 strike flights); 4 Navy Commendations with Combat “V”; Air Force Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Medals; Good Conduct Medal; Vietnam Service; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea); Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Air Gallantry Medal (with Gold Wings/11 stars); Presidential Unit Citation; Navy Unit Commendation; Meritorious Unit Commendations; Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendations; and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. Though he displayed a tough persona, Skip loved music, particularly the classics and opera. Skip was also a voracious reader of all things historical with emphasis on the Civil War, WWII and Vietnam operations. He devoted many hours each year in continued service to uniformed men and women as a Casualty Assistance Officer, helping families with burial plans and ceremonies. He stayed current of changes in military policies and procedures, and authored numerous articles and emails to officials and friends addressing the effects of those changes. Additionally, he made his farm available for countless ROTC and military functions and enjoyed meeting those young future leaders of the military. But Skip’s largest achievement in life was his three sons of whom he was extremely proud. He was often heard at Perche Creek Yacht functions bragging about Jeff, Chris or Jonny. He will be sorely missed. |
