Obituary: "The Steps of a Good Man are Ordered by the Lord" Psalm 37:23
Notes on the life of Max Young, by his daughter, Karen Walker. 1, 2014

My dad was born on 14, 1918 on a 160 acre farm in Fulton, Michigan. His Dad, Walter, was born into a second generation German family. His mother, Bertha (Guthrie), could trace her ancestry back ten generations to the Plymouth colony in 1645.
Walter lost his right hand in a saw mill accident before Dad was born, so Bertha and Dad helped him with the farming. used farm horses instead of tractors, and lived in a home without plumbing or electricity. Grandma cooked on a wood stove. The farm produced corn, pigs, chickens and dairy cows. The Young farm sold eggs and milk. Grandma Young grew a beautiful garden full of both vegetables and flowers.
Dad's brother, Lynn was born when Dad was five. were as different as two brothers can be. Dad was serious and quiet, while Lynn was outgoing and fun-loving. both attended a one room school house for the first eight years of their education. For many of those years Dad was the only child in his class. Their teacher invited Dad to church, where he learned about God, and accepted Jesus as his Savior. Grandpa had attended church as a young man, and often sang hymns while milking the cows, but Grandma was not happy that her son had become a Christian. Nevertheless, it was a decision that established the direction and the purpose of Dad's entire life.
Dad met Mom, Caroline Smink, when her family bought eggs from the Young farm. She spent her visits playing with Lynn, but she really had eyes for Dad. But she was almost three years younger than Dad, and he didn't pay her much attention. Dad attended Athens High School and rode a horse to school one year, and used his dad's car after that. He became class president, and graduated in a class of 26 at the age of 16. One of his classmates was Mom's brother, George. One time Mom asked George about Max, and he told her that they would never get along. He is too serious and quiet - definitely not her type.
graduation Grandpa Young offered Dad a choice: He could stay at home to help and eventually inherit the farm, or go to college. In school Dad had read a book entitled "The Romance of Engineering," and he chose college. It was another of those choices that changed the direction of his life.
He attended the University of Michigan, and graduated from Western Michigan University. While he was away at college he finally became aware of Mom, and asked George for permission to court her. He wrote her letters from college, which he illustrated with beautiful pen and ink drawings.
were married in George's apartment on 8, 1940. Thus began a path that they would travel together for 73 years. Dad was still serious and quiet, and Mom was energetic and outgoing. But together they formed an unbeatable team. The secret to their success was the third person of their marriage - the Lord Jesus Christ, whom they both loved and served.
Dad's work as a heating engineer took him to work in Muskegan, MI; Akron, OH; Grand Rapids, MI; and finally to Kalamazoo, MI. He wanted to enlist for WWII, but at that time he was working in Akron, refitting Naval war ships with boilers, and his work was classified as necessary to the war effort.
While they were living in Ohio, Mom and Dad were befriended by an older couple who were deeply involved in lay ministries. It wasn't long before the Nelson's had Dad preparing devotionals for a nursing home they visited each week. Mom and Dad began teaching School, serving on boards, and finding many ways to use their talents for the Lord. That training served as another path that they embarked on for the rest of their lives.
Joyce Elaine was born to them in 1944, while Dad was working in Ohio. She remained their only child for seven years. Finally, believing they would not be having more children, they decided to adopt a little sister for Joyce. Instead, they adopted a 9 year old boy, Roger Lynn, who had been in foster care for most of his life. By the time the adoption was completed Mom realized that she was pregnant. Karen was born in 1951 and the family of three became a family of five. We made our home in Kalamazoo, MI, and attended Calvary Bible Church.
Mom and Dad continued serving the Lord at Calvary. had a monthly commitment to preach, sing and feed folks at the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission for many years. Dad taught adult School classes, and served on the Board of Elders, Building Committee, and Missions Committee. He also served on the board of Gull Lake Bible Conference for a number of years. Mom taught children in church and in Child Evangelism Good News Clubs.
While Dad was teaching a series on the subject of "Fear", his oldest daughter, Joyce, passed away at the age of 23. She left an infant daughter, Wendy, and a grieving husband. Dad continued to teach that series in the midst of grief, and when he was in his 80's he compiled those lessons into a book entitled, "Must Fear Prevail."
In 1978 Karen and her family moved to Orlando to begin a servicemen's ministry near the Naval base. Dad retired, they moved to Deltona, to be closer to their growing grandchildren, Lisa and Tory. built a house and became involved with Fellowship Baptist Church. had planned on travel and relaxation. Instead they became so involved in the ministry in Deltona, that they put their trailer up for sale. Dad was able to use his woodworking skills to build bookshelves for the offices continued...
