Obituary: Phyllis Wolkins Yon, 85, passed away peacefully on , 5, 2015, at Advent Christian Village at Dowling Park in Live Oak, FL. Phyllis was born Phyllis Louise Wolkins on 1, 1930, in Washington, IN. She was a graduate of Memminger High School in Charleston, SC in 1947, and The of Charleston in 1951. Phyllis was a lifelong Christian and her life reflected her faith in God. She was the organist and choir director at the Episcopal church of St. Luke and St. Paul in Charleston, SC, where she met and married the love of her life, Vernon Klien Yon, on 16, 1951. She traveled with him while he served his country in the US Air Force. Upon her husbands retirement from the Air Force in 1972, they moved to Tallahassee, FL, where Phyllis obtained her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from Florida State University and became an elementary school teacher, teaching at Lillian E. Williams Elementary in Attapulgus, Georgia and Southside Elementary School in Cairo, Georgia. She was a member of Killearn United Methodist Church in Tallahassee for over 30 years and found great joy and fulfillment leading the childrens choir and singing in the sanctuary choir for many years, and through the fellowship of her School Class. their retirement, both Phyllis and her husband Vern delivered Meals on Wheels for many years in the community, until his death in 2008. Phyllis is survived by her son, Stephen (Linda) Yon; daughter, Kathy (Chris) Cauley; four grandchildren, Michael (Jenny) Yon, Kevin Yon, Angela and Katie Cauley, and two great grandsons Brandon and William Yon, all of Tallahassee. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Vernon Klien Yon; son, Scott Andrew Yon, and one sister. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on , 9, 2015, at Culley's MeadowWood on Timberlane Road. A worship service celebrating Phyllis' life will be held on, , 10, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel at Culley's on Timberlane Road.
