Obituary: Rodney Wallace Wilson, age 93, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully on 17, 2015, of kidney and heart failure while at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington as a patient of Delaware Hospice. He was a long-time resident of Chalfonte in North Wilmington. Born 1, 1922 in West New York, N.J., as the only child of Joseph K. and A. Ruth Wilson, Rod lived several places in North Jersey during his youth and graduated from Teaneck High School in 1938. He attended Bergen Junior until he received a presidential appointment to enter the United States Naval Academy in 1940. With the outbreak of World War II and the increased need for naval officers, Rods class of midshipmen undertook an accelerated course of study whereby he gained his commission in 1943. As an ensign, Rod reported to the destroyer USS Nicholson (DD 442) which was deployed to the Pacific in 1944. Rod served as assistant gunnery officer on the Nicholson during the New Guinea campaign when the ship delivered shore bombardment during a series of coastal assaults. In 1944, the Nicholson was directed to draw fire from an enemy battery during the attack on Seeadler Harbor in the Admiralty Islands. Rod was in his role as a gunnery officer when the destroyer was struck by a Japanese shell that hit in one of the ammunition handling rooms killing several sailors and wounding others. The Nicholson responded by destroying the enemy shore position. Rod stayed with the Nicholson for the duration of WWII, eventually becoming the ships executive officer. He remained a in can sailor in his next assignment as an officer on the destroyer USS Flusser (DD 368) which participated in the first nuclear weapon tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1946. Moving to the Atlantic Fleet, Rod became commanding officer of the minesweeper USS Wheatear (AM 390). In his last assignment in the Navy, he served as navigator on the heavy cruiser USS Newport News (CA 148) which was the flagship for the Mediterranean Sixth Fleet during that period. Rod decided to leave the Navy in 1954, with the rank of lieutenant commander, and he embarked instead on a career in business. He obtained his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1956 and soon after was recruited to join DuPont. He worked for many years in the companys Fabrics & Finishes Department during which time he managed sales and marketing for DuPonts line of automotive additives and car care products. He retired in 1985 after 28 years with the company. While he was making etter things for better living . . . through chemistry in his work at DuPont, Rod found his own better living through the chemistry he had with Nancy Snyder (Wilson). married in 1955 and joined many other young Wilmington couples who were starting families and living in the old Monroe Park Apartments. Rod and Nancy, who survives him, raised three children: Darla, Tyler and Rodney over the course of several DuPont relocations between Delaware and New York. Rod and his family finally settled in Chalfonte in 1970. Rod was a devoted husband and a caring father and grandfather. He was a person who tackled every responsibility and pursued every interest with enthusiasm and diligence. Helping with homework, serving as a chief in the YMCA Indian Guides, tossing around a baseball or football with his kids after work, coaching at his grandson Zanes birth and playing a significant role in his upbringing, and providing a loving and supportive environment at home were all the types of activities at which Rod excelled. His lifelong interests included golf at the DuPont Country Club, oil painting, gardening, and San Francisco Giants baseball. He picked up his first pair of downhill skis when he was 48 years old and skied with his family every winter until he was 84. He waited until he was 64 to begin Nordic skiing which he did with Nancy in New England and in the Rockies. Rod and Nancy traveled extensively in the United States and internationally after his retirement. Rod was an avid supporter of numerous environmental, social justice, political reform and other progressive organizations. He was particularly committed to helping bring about improved educational opportunities and living conditions for Native American children and elderly adults. Perhaps because he was born during the Warren G. Harding Administration, Rod was a longtime Democrat who never missed his opportunity to vote. In addition to his wife of nearly 60 years, Rod is survived by: Darla F. Wilson of Wilmington; Tyler J. Wilson and his wife, Ann D. Blakey, of Arlington, Va.; Rodney L. Wilson of Mays Landing, N.J.; and five grandchildren: Sarah, Zane, Adrien, Nina and Martin. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Patricia A. (Bouchard) Wilson. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 pm on , 22, at Chandler , 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Del 19803. An interment will be held privately and at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Rod would have suggested a donation to: Soaring Eagle, A Public Charity which supports the Heritage Living for northern Cheyenne Elders in Ashland, Mont. at the following address: 922 Wyoming Avenue, P.O. Drawer 879, Billings, MT 59103 (ph: 406-256-8500) or www.soaringeagle.org. |
