_______________ FRIDAY FEBRUARY 4 2000 , community remembers professor Winternitz
Ryan Olson, managing editor On 5th, 2000, the Colorado community lost a tremendous teacher, mentor, and friend, as Biology professor Barbara Winternitz passed away after falling victim to cancer. She was 68. A consummate scientist, outdoorswoman, and source of inspiration to so many with whom she interacted, shockwaves from her unexpected passing still seem to reverberate throughout the biology department, the student community, and all of those with whom I had the pleasure of speaking.
Though I never had the privilege of taking a class from Professor Winternitz, through a great many interviews I feel as if I have gained some small window into the life of a teacher the likes of whom students remembered long after their classroom. experience had passed. I can only hope to do justice to someone so liked, admired, and now so dearly missed.
Students have lost the experience of being in the field with her. Each of us is unique; Barbara is unique [and] her special gifts as a teacher, friend, and colleague are going to be missed by students, Biology Professor Alexandra Vargo explained. When I first heard about it I went into shock, Vargo added. I have lost a good friend and colleague...we shared a lot, both being female biologists. We both loved animals...when you have friends whom you have things in common with, you feel better about yourself.
Winternitz, who joined the CC faculty in 1972, fought through adversity and numerous hard times in her life before her tragic death. She saw both of her children pass away. But if there is a word to characterize how she lived her life, perhaps an appropriate one would be dedication. Dedication to her field, her surroundings, and everything else that she wed.
getting married and raising her two children, Winternitz decided that she wanted to return to school and complete her education, so she began taking classes at UCCS, and eventually earned her PhD in the early 1970s after doing additional work at CU Boulder.
She knew the Pikes Peak region like the back of her hand, mentioned biology Professor Ken Andrews, Winternitz was active in groups such as the Springs Beautification Committee and Southwest Studies here at CC. Of the people at this college, hardly anyone worked as much in the city as Barbara.
In addition to working with open spaces she also helped such projects as the minimalization of climber impact in Garden of the Gods, as Andrews elaborated. She was a kind and gentle lady that people liked, and a great role model for women in the sciences.
She was a wonderful woman and a wonderful professor, explained senior Chris Forristal. She had a lot of passion for what she did, and you could tell. She was very good about encouraging her students in what they were interested in doing... whatever people got excited about, she found a way to help them explore their own passions. Winternitz was scheduled to teach an eighth block class this year; Forristal poignantly mentioned that he eally wanted to have her as [his] last professor here at CC.
She was an amazing person, thinker, and scientist... and a great example of how to be a good naturalist, senior Sarah Schuster mentioned. Universally described as a quiet, gentle lady with a passion for her work, Winternitz will be missed by all of those who had the fortune of enjoying what she brought to CC and everywhere else she worked.
But it is undoubtedly the great memories of lost friends that help them live on, in a sense, after they have passed away, and I had the honor of having so many share their thoughts with me. I only wish that I could find the space to share all of them.
Shes not gone because each of us has memories...I like to think that in her ecological approach to life she is still here; if you think of everything that she made you aware of, then shes very alive, added Chemistry Professor Sally Meyer, who spent 10 years teaching summer classes with Winternitz.
She had a quiet way of making you think - a very insightful way of helping you see lifes fireworks on your own and giving you the patience to go look for them, concluded Vargo. In remembrance of a woman whos legacy is far from over, we celebrate the life and work of Professor Barbara Winternitz. -Reflections-- She taught me more about teaching than anyone whom Ive ever worked with...I would have never stayed here had it not been for her. -Sally Meyer, Chemistry She was a most generous person with her knowledge and her friendship...and a superb fly fisherwoman -Marianne Stoller, Anthropology Professor Emerita She got away from the idea that you have to be staring into a microscope to be doing science...there is a humanistic approach to it, and thats the way it was with Barbara -Ann Van Horn, Associate Registrar Remembering Barbara Winternitz
