Obituary: Grant Valentine Wickard was born on Valentines Day, 14, 1918, in Sisseton, South Dakota, to Lena and Albert Wickard. He was the third youngest of 11 children: five boys and six girls, and is survived by his younger sister, Esther. Grant completed 8 grades in a one-room school house in South Dakota. At age 17, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and was paid $30 a month; $5 he was able to keep and $25 was automatically sent home to his family. The family survived the Dust Bowl and Great Depression of the 1930s. At age 19, Grant left South Dakota to live in Illinois with some of his older brothers and sisters. He worked in Illinois on farms and in factories until joining the Navy in , 1941. While in the Navy sailing the Pacific Grant read and studied many items of self-interest during his off-duty hours. It is interesting to note that Grant went aboard ship as an apprentice seaman at the pay of $21 a month and by the end of the war, he had advanced to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. nearly six years in the Navy, Grant left the Service in 1947 and came to Denver, Colorado on a vacation. He liked Colorado and never left. Grants first job in Colorado was at the Denver Federal as a steam-fitters helper. He ultimately told his boss, Take this job and shove it! From there Grant went to the Veterans Administration to inquire about job training. Following a battery of tests, including the GED, the counselor told him that he qualified to attend college. Grants response was, I haven even gone to high school, how can I go to college? However, his test scores were high enough to allow him to attend college without ever attending high school. Grant enrolled in the University of Denver and later transferred to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, graduating in 1951. Grant was recruited by the Denver Public Schools starting in 1951 at East High School teaching wood shop and social studies. He earned his Masters Degree from the University of Denver in the following three years by attending school during summer vacations. In 1961, Grant was assigned to Denvers newly opened George Washington High School as a er and Counselor. From George Washington Grant went to the Denver Public Schools Administration Building and held several positions until his retirement in 1981. Grants varied and interesting career was also matched by an equally varied and interesting personal life. Grant was a loving man. Grant married Luella and they had one son together, Bob. He subsequently married Betty and they raised two children together, Greg and David. As Grant began his retirement he married Anna and inherited her two children, Craig and Theresa, and a whole bunch of relatives. In his late years Grant enjoyed his many grand and great- grandchildren. His extended clan and especially his grandkids and children brought him love, joy and laughter and together they created many fond memories that will live on in each of us. And lastly, as most everyone already knows, Grant enjoyed Colorado and the outdoors. He became an avid fisherman, big-game hunter, and ultimately became interested in golf, mountain climbing, and skiing. In his mid 50s, at the urging of his good friend, Don Sorensen, Grant took up skiing and became extraordinarily proficient at the sport. He participated in amateur ski racing, competing in many local ski races, usually finishing first or second in his age group. In 1998, he was second in the nation in the NASTAR Competition for his age group. In his mid 60s (after he had retired) Grant chose to climb all of Colorados 54 mountain peaks that are over 14,000 in elevation. Ultimately, with tongue planted firmly in cheek, Grant came to tell people when questioned that Colorado was not that great of a place and that folks should probably find someplace else to relocate in order to ensure more room for himself in the mountains he loved. Grant Wickard, 92 of Denver passed away Nov. 8, 2010. Husband of Anna Wickard; father of Bob (Ellen), Greg (Edy) &; David (Judy, deceased); brother of Esther Ringler; also survived by numerous grand and great grandchildren. Memorial service, , 15, 2010, 6pm, Olinger Crown Hill, 29th & Wadsworth. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the DPSREA Scholarship Foundation, 2408 S.
