Obituary: Ida Elizabeth Whitaker was a modest woman, quiet and observant in her ways. She was trustworthy and traditional in her approach to her life and in her relationships. She was tough-minded with the kind of stick to it attitude that earned the respect of all who knew her. She was also a woman who was meticulous, carefully disciplined, and orderly in virtually everything she undertook. Realistic about life, she was always at the ready, prepared to take on responsibility. Ida was born on May 2, 1917 in Waterbury, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Harry and Wilhemina Murphy. Ida grew up in Columbia and Pitchers Counties in New York. Ida was raised with three siblings. She had one older brother, Harry, and two older sisters, Edna and Hazel. Ida was usually involved in all sorts of activities with her siblings. She and her siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years. As a young girl, Ida had a number of interests. Like most children, she enjoyed playing and making up games. She was curious about the world around her and was often eager to explore it. Idas mother passed away when she was 12 and she became the homemaker for her father and older brother as her sisters were already grown and away from home by then. A typical teenager, Ida had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. She graduated from Roeliff Jansen Central School in 1935. She enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. In addition to graduating fourth in her class, she earned a New York State Regents diploma. On 23, 1937 Ida exchanged wedding vows with Bernard Whitaker at State Street Presbyterian Church of Schenectady, New York. Empathic and loyal, Ida was committed to making her new family happy. Ida worked hard to be a good mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs. Ida was blessed with two sons, David and Richard. Another blessing for Ida was the gift of two grandchildren, Michelle and Marilyn, and three great grandchildren, Marrissa, Isabel and Clara. Fortunately, Ida enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Ida worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. Her primary occupation was wife, mother and homemaker. She lived a quiet life on a farm in the country near Hudson, New York. Ida always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done. Ida enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were sewing, reading and cooking. She was content to enjoy her favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share her interests with others. Throughout her life, Ida was a doer and was always actively involved in professional and community organizations. Throughout her later years, Ida was an active member of the Grange. Idas faith was important to her. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church for 50 years. During that time, she sang in the choir, quilted, worked on church suppers and was a School teacher. At the age of 81, she moved with her husband, Bernard, from the farm in upstate New York to Imperial Beach, California to be near her son, David, and her grandchildren. Even in retirement, Ida continued to stay in touch with her old friends while making plenty of new acquaintances. Ida was active in her new community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities retirement offered her. Ida passed away on 6, 2009 at Windsor Gardens Convalescent in National City, California. Ida suffered a stroke in 2004 that took away a lot of her memory and cognitive thinking. She spent her last years in Windsor Gardens. She is survived by her son David; her grandchildren Michelle and Marilyn; and her great grandchildren Marrissa, Isabel and Clara. Services were held at The Little Chapel of the Roses. Ida was laid to rest in Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, California. Simply stated, Ida was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Ida leaves behind her a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember Ida Elizabeth Whitaker. |

Obituary: Herbert Charles "Corky" Whitaker Old Timber Faller Has Fallen Corky was born 26, 1930 in Knowles, Oklahoma. He passed away 21, 2010 in Eureka, California at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his birth parents Lloyd Whitaker of Oklahoma and Georgia McAtee of Illinois; parents Billie and Lewis McAtee; and siblings Laura Lewis and Glen Whitaker. He is survived by his siblings Mary Hoffman and Florence Roberts of Wichita, Kansas, Nadine Street of North Bend, Oregon, and Pete McAtee of Greenville, California; his children Darell Whitaker of Anchorage, Alaska, Dana Whitaker of Orick, California, and Dennis and Susan Whitaker of Redding, California; and grandchildren Brett, Bailey and Shane. Corky served in the U.S. Navy entering the service in 1947. He later became a timber faller was a very dedicated worker in the timber industry where he worked for over 45 years. He enjoyed deer hunting and was known for his "prankster" personality. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. At his request no services will be held.
