Obituary: Leroy J. West, 76, Weston, passed away , 1, 2015, at Tender Reflections in Weston. He is already missed by many.
Lee, the son of Harold and Elinor West, was born 8, 1938, in Birnamwood. He grew up in Elderon, where he learned to love the farmlands of central Wisconsin. Lee entered the U.S. Air Force in 1957, serving in post-war Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1960.
He soon met his lifetime sweetheart, Kathleen Kosobucki, and they were married 11, 1964, in a large celebratory wedding in Tigerton. The wedding, which included nearly 1,000 guests, ran well into the following day, with breakfast served for all in attendance.
Lee and Kathy eventually moved to Schofield and started a family. Lee worked at Emmons Office Supply as an office machine repairman. He loved to tinker with machinery and eventually started his own small typewriter-repair business. He later worked for Drott/J.I.Case until his retirement in 1994. During his working career, he also had part-time jobs at Purolator/Courier; the Wausau Police Dept., where he repaired parking meters; and the Girl Scouts, where he helped with camp maintenance. In retirement, he was employed at Sams Club as a greeter and all-around go-to guy.
Lee was a lifetime member of the Elderon VFW Post 8068, where he served on the honor guard. He also faithfully attended the Elderon 4th of celebration, where he marched in the parade, helped with cheese curd frying and just enjoyed hanging out with the guys from his post.
Lee was a family man, raising four children — Suellen, Allen, Amy and Robert — with Kathy. He will be remembered as a quiet man with an even-keeled personality; someone who built pinewood derby cars with his kids, coached Little League and made pancakes for breakfast. He worked hard and gently led his children to become remarkable adults.
He and Kathy enjoyed traveling together, especially to Las Vegas. Lee loved watching the Packers, Cubs and NASCAR, and he played a lot of baseball and softball, even starting an old timers softball team in the Wausau area. He spent hours at the Kosobucki family farm, assisting with fieldwork and farm chores. He made yearly fishing trips to Leech Lake, Minn., with a group of friends and family, and he spent many falls hunting whitetails. But most of all, he loved going through life with Kathy and watching his family grow.
His family will always remember how welcome he made everyone feel. When visiting, the last image anyone saw upon leaving was Lee, standing in the driveway waving.
The door is always open, he would say.
Lee is survived by his wife, Kathy, and his four children: Sue (Paul) Bergh, Plover; Al (Jen) West, Three Lakes; Amy (Dave) Hansen, Fond du Lac; and Bob (Grace) West, Granada Hills, Calif. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Andy and Olivia Bergh; Gabe, Ada and Ben West; Paige and Jack Hansen; and Violet West — along with a sister JoAnne Mills, Tigerton, and brothers Roger (Andrea) West, Lewisville, Texas; Rich (Pat) West, Stevens Point; and Ray (Pat) West, Kronenwetter. Lee was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Bill Mills.
Visitation will be at Brainard — Everest Chapel, 5712 Memorial Court, Weston — from 5 to 7 p.m. concluding with veteran honors by the Elderon VFW. Memorial service will be held , 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 113 W. Kort St., Rothschild. Rev. Louis Britto will officiate. A visitation will also take place from 10 a.m. to time of service at the church. Burial will be held at a later date.
