Obituary: Donald Graham Wood, an outstanding farmer and long-time resident of Beverly, passed away 22, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born 27, 1919, in Lost River (Hardy ) WV, the eldest son of Arthur A. and Ruth Chrisman Wood. On 14, 1943, he was married to Annie Sara Hannah at the Hannah farm in Arbovale, WV. had celebrated 68 years of marriage. Surviving are their four daughters: Linda Conners and husband, Bob, of Beverly; Anita Gordon and husband, Jack, of Chadds Ford, PA; Ann Keeney and husband, Steve, of Corliss, WV; and Dawn Swecker and husband, Arden II, of Beverly and special friend, Dr. Paul Lewis, who he mentored and considered part of the family. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; Lisa Clute (Jeff) of West Chester, PA; Jill Malkoun (Dan) of Stamford, CT; John Keeney (Celena) of Corliss, WV; Sarah Doerner (Brandon) of Hurricane, WV; Melissa Green (Will) of Ruffs Dale, PA; Amanda Reese (Matt) and Hannah Fincham (Derek), both of Beverly, WV. In later years his 16 great grandchildren were the light of his life. are: Kacey, Dustin and Skylar Green; Abby and Adam Clute; Finn and Zoe Malkoun; Katie and Aaron Doerner; Sam, Ben and Luke Keeney; Ethan Reese; and Eva and Grady Fincham. Don was the last surviving member of the immediate Wood family. Preceding him in death were his lovely wife Annie, two brothers, Eugene Wood, Denver, CO and James Wood, an airborne pilot killed in action in World War II, and one great-grand daughter, Karissa Renee Green. Don was a 1938 graduate of Elkins High School and went on to further his education at D&E and WVU. At each of these schools, as well as the Army Olympics in Japan, he was an outstanding track athlete. Soon after Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the Aviation Cadets and later served in the Armys 97th Infantry Division, 303rd Field Artillery Battalion in the European and Pacific theatres. He attained the rank of 1st Sergeant. World War II, Don returned to the family farm in Beverly. He established himself as a dairy farmer and initiated the Producers Coop Dairy in Elkins. He was President of each the Randolph Farm Bureau, the WV Artificial Breeders Association, and the WV Dairymens Association. He was given the county and regional Farming for Better Living awards, Master Conservationist (county and regional) awards and in 1955, runner-up Master Conservationist for the State of West Virginia. In , 1959, Don decided to go into politics. Always an outgoing person with a ready smile and a desire to help those in need, he was a natural. He was elected as a Commissioner on the Randolph Court, taking office in 1960. In 1961, Don left the Court and dairy business to better provide for the family and the daughters educations. He began an 18 year career with the USDA as District Director of the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service. He supervised 31 counties in WV and retired in 1979. Throughout his ASCS career, Don was always a farmer. He shifted from dairy to Murray Grey beef cattle, blueberries, and grapes. Over the years he was known for the sweet corn, strawberries and tomatoes grown at Hanwood Farm. He was twice recognized as WV Strawberry King. He won many farming awards and in 2007, he was inducted into the WV Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame at Jacksons Mill. At the age of 40, Don picked up his first set of golf clubs. He was left-handed and sliced the ball, resulting in many balls ending up in the Tygart Valley River. Finally he settled on playing with only a five-iron, which gave him two Hole in Ones and other wins. At age 91 he hung up the clubs, but he did love that game! In the 1980s and 1990s Don started crafting knives with leather sheaths (over 450 in all) which he sold or gave to friends and family. When the hands got tired, he started reading books—over 300 in recent years. Don was an active member of the Beverly Presbyterian Church since 1946. He was a Trustee of the church and had served as Elder and Treasurer. He was also a longtime member and supporter of Kappa Alpha Fraternity (WVU), a Tygart Valley Lions Club member for over 50 years, and a life member of both the VFW Post 3647 and BP Order of Elks 1135. His family gratefully thanks the four wonderful people (Nikki, Patricia, Terri and Liz) who helped us care for him, as well as the special employees of Hospice , Corp. Mr. Woods request for cremation was honored. The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb of Elkins from 4 to 7 PM, . A Memorial Service will be held at the Beverly Presbyterian Church on , 28, 2016 at 1 PM with the Rev. Dr. David Bower officiating. A Private Graveside service will be held at the Maplewood at Elkins, WV where the WV National Guard Honor Guard Program, the H. W. Daniels Post # 29, American Legion, and the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors .
