Obituary: Beatrice was born 30, 1916 at 4 Violet Lane in Nottingham, England. She quickly acquired the nicknames Trix and Trixie. Trixies father was an ardent fan of opera and theater, so when Trixie was older he told her that she was named for the character Beatrice in Shakespeares Much Ado about Nothing. This was no doubt a tease, since her aunt who served as godmother had the middle name Beatrice. When Trixie was two, the family which included her mother Grace, father Edward, older sister Gladys, and Trixie, moved to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. There Edward took a position as head of soap and perfume making for a local company. As Trixie grew she became interested in outdoor activities. The climate was ideal. She swam, surfed, played tennis, hiked, picnicked, and chased around with her pals. A baby brother, Reg, arrived when Trixie was 11. She didn talk a lot about her early years in Australia, and a fire claimed the family home with most of the childhood photos, when a neighbor lost control of a bonfire in his back yard. the equivalent of secondary school Trixie agreed to attend business school to study secretarial science, if she could continue swimming and tennis. Her soft hearted parents agreed. She excelled in typing (over 100 wpm on a manual typewriter) and shorthand. Smith Corona chose her to demonstrate their latest typewriter in a filmed promotion for Australia. When school finished, work began at the Orient Line. a few months of training in Sydney, Trix returned to Brisbane and took on administrative/secretarial duties for the shipping operation. Her sister Gladys went to England to further her nursing training. When WWII started in Europe, most of the Australian forces went to North Africa to support Britain. So when Japan came into the War in 1941 the Aussies considered themselves sitting ducks. mobilized what they could. Trixie and her friends did their part. joined the Womens Reserve of the Emergency Naval Service (WRENS) as volunteers. work they drilled to learn morse and semaphore code so they could relieve naval personnel to do other duties in an emergency. also provided needed provisions like socks and tobacco to service clubs. Trix commented that she learned to get by on about 4 hours sleep during this time. She admitted that after about a week she had to take a day to catch up on sleep. Fortunately, when MacArthur was driven from the Philippines the US Army elected to make Australia their new headquarters. American supplies and troops started arriving. Among them was Frank Woracek, a mechanic with the Quarter Masters of the US Army Air Corps. Trixie and Frank met at the beach where she was having a week end break and he had a pass for R&R. A year or so later they married on 7, 1944. a brief honeymoon, Frank returned to service. Frank evacuated to the US on a hospital ship in 1945 because of a back injury he sustained in the service. He was discharged in late . Since the war had ended he sent for Trixie to join him as soon as possible. She steamed into San Francisco, where Frank met her and they drove to Tacoma where they started life together. On 1, 1947 the family grew by one with the arrival of David. Both Frank and Trix were looking for more opportunity and adventure so Frank took a job with Montgomery Ward in Longbeach, California, in refrigeration maintenance. lived near one of Franks army friends and his Australian bride in a trailer court. Housing was in short supply after the war. Henry and Enid, and Frank and Trix formed a lifelong friendship. The cost of living was high and even though the wages were higher than in Washington State, they didn match the costs, so Frank and Trix decided to return to Washington where many members of his family lived. settled in project housing in Seattle. Henry and Enid returned to Australia to seek their future. Frank started his own refrigeration repair business and was making steady progress. His injured back from the army was a concern. Living near them in the housing project was another GI bride and her husband and her mother. She was a lass from Yorkshire and her mother was a widow of a career Black Watch soldier from Britain. The GI was an Army Air Corps Major, Maj. McColler. The two families became friends. The McCollers had two children, a boy the same age as David (about 3) and a baby girl. Grandma Frier took care of both. Trix was itchy to go back to the business world so she took a job with a Dutch shipping company in Seattle. David acquired a new grandma. In 1952 one of Franks acquaintances, John, worked on him to move his business to northern Idaho where the need was great. John would run an appliance sales business and Frank would do service. The opportunity looked good and Frank and Trix moved. Unfortunately, John lost interest and went on to other things. Frank and Trix started the sale and service business and called it Kellogg Refrigeration, after the town where it was located. Frank did the service and Trix helped run the store, did the books, and answered the phones. The business was meager at first but they slowly built it and added television to their product line as that new phenomenon started to bloom in Spokane. a couple of years and a new partner to handle the TV portion they decided to change the business to service only. The appliance sales were not contributing much and there was friction in the partnership. With the sales business gone Trix was at loose ends so she went to the local mining and refining company, Bunker Hill, and found work as a secretary for the industrial engineering department. A few years later her talents were noticed and continued... |
