Obituary: Wayne L. Woodard was born at home on 18, 1925 near King City, Missouri. His parents, Adelbert O. (Delbert) (Del) and Jennie L. (Gibson) Woodard lived on a 40 acre farm in Empire Prairie, located in Andrew Missouri. Wayne was the 5th child born to Jennie and Delbert in their 2 story farmhouse. Marthaleen, Robert, Glenn, and Byron were his older brothers and sister. One more sister, Mary, would be born in the same farmhouse in 1928. Wayne's family worked the farm, through some very tough times, including the "Great Depression" and severe weather including one of the worst winters on record in 1936. Delbert and Jennie made the decision that they wanted to move the family "west". Delbert considered Alaska, but they decided California would be their destination, and a better life. In 1936, Wayne was 11 years old. His father put the farm up for sale. Delbert bought a flatbed truck, modified it to hold two adults, 6 children and minimal household possessions to start a new life, the truck was full!. headed to California. When they reached Denver, Marthaleen decided she wanted to return to Missouri to marry her boyfriend. several stops along the way to visit friends, they finally made it to Washington State. As they were crossing Snoqualmie Pass an oil tanker ran into the family truck. While the truck was being repaired Delbert and Jennie made friends in North Bend Washington and decided to stay in the area for a while. ( never did make it to California.) The family lived in quite a few homes in the Redmond/Kirkland area before the boys reached high school, which may be why Wayne lived in the house he bought for 63 years. The brothers attended Redmond High School. Then WWII broke out. His brothers enlisted in the Marine Corps. Wayne followed them and enlisted in 1943, he was 17 years old. His high school diploma was sent to him while he was in boot camp in California. Wayne completed boot camp and was sent to the Philippines. He was assigned to the VMB-611 Marine Bombing squadron stationed at Moret Field, Zamboanga. On the troop transport Wayne was a cook and enjoyed pie making ever since. the war was over, he received an honorable discharge and returned to civilian life. He worked at various jobs on the west coast. He worked for the phone company in California, did construction work in Orting, Washington, unloaded bananas from freighters in Seattle and various other jobs. One night, when he was living in Seattle, Wayne went to the Trianon Ballroom with some friends, and met a girl from St. Louis, Missouri named Barbara Louise Boyette. Wayne and Barbara double dated with other couples, fell in love, and decided to get married. were married 12, 1952 at Ronald Methodist Church and lived in an apartment in the Fremont district of Seattle. 1n 1953, they purchased a home north of Seattle, now the City of Shoreline. In 1954 their first child was born, a girl, and they named her Susan Lynn. The following year their son was born, Thomas Wayne. Wayne started work at Kenworth Truck in 1955. 33 years later, in 1988, he retired as the machine shop scheduler. Wayne had many hobbies. He played tennis in high school, fished, built furniture for his home, grew dahlias from bulbs that his father had started, maintained his home and car himself. Barbara and Wayne enjoyed taking their family camping and exploring the northwest and Canada. retirement, they also enjoyed visiting Hawaii and taking cruises to Alaska, Fiji and the Caribbean. Barbara passed in 1999. Wayne continued to travel to visit relatives. He also became an avid mystery book reader. Wayne passed quietly on May 13, 2017 at the age of 92.
