Obituary: She was lovingly known to many as Anita, Mom, Auntie Nita, Grandma, and "Graham-Cracker Grams" -- and to her husband she was my sweet baboo." Anita was the youngest of four children born to Arthur and Rose Martin, on 5, 1930 in Seattle, Washington. As a young girl she lived in Bothell, Woodinville, and Seattle, graduating in 1949 from Queen Anne High School. A member of the Girls Club, with a fondness for Frank Sinatras Somewhere in the Night, she aspired to be a successful seamstress. In her final weeks she could still sing the Grizzlies fight song. As a young teen, she worked at various jobs to help her family, including waitressing at the Frederick & Nelson Tea Room and as a telephone operator. At each job, her boss would ask for documentation showing she was 16 years of age. She would put them off for as long as she could. When they finally insisted she provide proof, she would resign and search for another job. As a young woman, she worked at Washington Escrow and Capretto & Clark Real Estate Services. At the end of World War II, she caught the eye of her older brother Wills best friend, Roger Wilcox. When a group of Rogers friends invited him to move with them to California, he said, I think Im going to stay here and wait for Anita. were married in Seattle on 9, 1951; a day with record snowfall. Sister Norma served as matron of honor, Will was best man, and brother George walked her down the aisle. Roger and Anita raised 5 children (4 daughters and a son), first in West Seattle and then in the Renton home where she lived for the past 46 years. While her children were growing up, she actively volunteered at their schools and served as Girl Scout troop leader and cookie mom. She was extremely talented at needle crafts including sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. She enjoyed creating beautiful ceramics with her sister-in-law, Marilynn, and made many treasured holiday decorations, lovingly stamped on the bottom as WilcoxWare. Anita was an avid reader and loved all kinds of games. She enjoyed the challenge of a giant jigsaw puzzle and could quickly place the most difficult pieces. She was also a bit of a card shark, playing hearts, pinochle, bridge, and hand-and-foot with family and friends. At an Elks family picnic, she won a blueberry pie eating contest. She said the secret was to eat a hole in the top crust and then slurp out the filling. In 1974 she began a civil service career in the Army Corps of Engineers' personnel department. She was honored by the Colonel as Employee of the Year in 1984 and retired in 1996. Anita was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church for 46 years. She taught School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was also active in Ladies Guild, OWLS, and served as church board secretary and on many committees. She was a regular blood donor, becoming an official member of the Gallon Club. Her family continued to grow as her children married and started families of their own. She and Roger had 12 grandchildren, who coined the phrase Its always a party at Grandmas house! As some family members moved out of state, it was a big celebration when everyone was gathered together in Renton at The House. A great cook, she was famous for her homemade cookies, lemon bars, watermelon basket fruit salad, and holiday meals. a delicious dinner, Roger would often lean back and say, Anita, youve done it again. Anita and Roger enjoyed trips to Italy, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The family took many memorable summer vacations to Loon Lake in sunny eastern Washington. Favorite memories include hand-cranked ice cream and the big final-day trout fry. There were also annual trips to the "Milk Run in Tillamook, Oregon with the extended Martin clan, as well as excursions to Disneyland, Hawaii, Nevada, and Texas with family members. She served as caregiver for Nell Wilcox for several years, and also for her husband, Roger, until his passing in 2005 after 54 years of marriage. She is preceded in death by her siblings, Will, George and Norma. Her much-loved sister-in-law, Kathy, will carry the banner of the infamous gang of in-laws and out-laws. Having suffered a heart attack in 2004, and diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2006, Anita was cared for in her home by three wonderful caregivers for the past four years. She continued to enjoy family get-togethers and friendships made through her church activities. She would always say, Come early and stay late. Yes, it was always a party at Grandmas house. under the direction of Greenwood , Renton, WA. |
