Obituary: World War II Codebreaker Dies at 101 Alice Goodson Hart Woodby 21, 1912 \ 16, 2014 Alice was born in Columbus, Kansas, on 21, 1912 and moved to Warrensburg, Missouri, where she grew up with her older sister Bernice and younger brother Marc. She was one of the women who made great contributions to our nation and was one of the women who continually led the way for professional women. She was the youngest graduate from Missouri State Teachers in 1930 at the age of 17 when she received three degrees: Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Bachelor of Science in Education, and Master of Arts in History. Soon after she became a high school teacher (teaching students older than she was), and taught at various schools and junior colleges until 1943. In summers she did graduate work at Louisiana State University and The University of Missouri. On May 31, 1943, at the age of 30, she walked through the gates of Arlington Hall Station to be sworn in as an Army Cryptanalyst to work on Japanese Codes. She made significant contributions there, being key in breaking the codes that gave us the final disposition of the German forces just prior to the D-Day invasion at Normandy 70 years ago. While at Arlington Hall, she met and married Army Intelligence Officer and Cryptanalyst Lt. Hyman H. Hart on May 13, 1944, at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Washington, DC. Hy was with the invasion of Okinawa, and after WWII left active service, but was called back for Korea. WWII ended, they made their home in Tacoma, Washington. Alice started working in the business world, but came to realize that what she wanted to do was teach, which she did in Tacoma until 1958. In 1958, Alice received two awards from the National Science Foundation, Institute for Teachers of Mathematics, one at the University of Illinois and one at the University of Chicago. The family moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana where Alice completed her advanced degree in mathematics, and Hy received his PhD in English Literature (Shakespeare). Alice was the Director of many Academic and Summer Institutes funded by the NSF for in-service teachers. For five summers she taught at Gallaudet for the Deaf in Washington, DC. Alice was President of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served on several committees for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and was a consultant for the US Office of Education. She was selected as one of the hundred distinguished alumni honored at the Centennial Celebration of Central Missouri State . Her two sons, Bennett and Michael, were both Eagle Scouts and graduated from the University of Illinois. Bennett served in the Army as an Intelligence Officer and in the Department of Defense in the Senior Executive Service. He married Margaret Porento of Chicago, Illinois. Alice has one granddaughter, Elizabeth, who is a graduate of Virginia Tech, and works on Vice-President Bidens Staff at the White House. Michael, who graduated with straight As, served in the Army, went on to found Project Gutenberg, and is credited as the Inventor of E-Books. Alice continued to teach at the University of Illinois (Chicago Circle) and became a Full Professor in 1971. In 1976 she divorced and moved to The Ohio State University. In 1982, Alice married Lauren Woodby, a fellow professor at Ohio State. retired to Niceville, Florida, where Lauren died in 1991. Alice returned to Northern Virginia, to be near family members. She chose the Fairfax Retirement Community for her home and was active in the DAR, genealogy, bridge and helping others with computers and the challenge of working through health billings. Obituary: Charles E. Woody Woodbury, 67, died unexpectedly, 14, 2016. Born, 24, 1948, he was the son of Charles and Bessie Matteson Woodbury of Castleton, VT. He was the oldest of seven children, grew up in Castleton, VT and was a 1966 graduate of West Rutland High School. Woody was well known in the automotive tire community in both Vermont and Virginia. Having sold tires for over 45 years, he always answered as the ire man. Woody never met anyone he didn like or who didn like him. Woody had an unending love of race cars and auto racing. He was a member of STAR-Senior Tour Auto Racers, as well as various other vintage racing organizations. Woody is survived by his wife of 31 years, Susan; two daughters, Shari Herron and her husband, David of Salt Lake City, UT and Lynn Crawford and her husband, Rusty of Ruther Glen; daughter-in-law, Teresa Leavitt and her companion, Ralph Roy of Winchester, NH; grandsons, Tyler Herron, Colton Herron, and Joseph Woodbury; granddaughter-in-law, Candase Leavitt; and great granddaughter, Sophia Leavitt; siblings, Sharon Kendall and her husband, Bruce of Fair Haven, VT; Bernard Woodbury and his companion, Sherry Riffenburg of Bomseen, VT, Deb Woodbury of New Haven, VT, Kathryn Breznick and her husband, Ed of Poultney, VT; sister-in-law, Leila Brown of Keene, NH; brother-in-law, David Dorry and his wife, Robin of Mesa, AZ; brother-in-law, James Beaureguard of Keene, NH. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Woody is predeceased by his parents, a sister, Marguerite Cole; a brother, Anthony Fred Woodbury; a son, Joseph Leavitt; a grandson, Theron Leavitt and a sister-in-law, Patricia Beauregard. Obituary: Benjamin Halsey Woodbridge Jr., 80, of Fredericksburg died of heart failure on , 4, 2015. Born May 2, 1935, in New York, N.Y., he was the only son of Benjamin Halsey Woodbridge Sr. and Helen Frances Flansburgh of Arlington. Ben graduated from the University of Virginia in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree and the University of Virginia School of Law in 1963. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta fraternity. Ben served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1958. Ben practiced criminal defense and personal injury in Fredericksburg and statewide for more than 50 years. He was an active member of the Virginia State Bar and Virginia Trial Lawyers associations. He was an elected member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1970 to 1974. During his tenure, he served on the Roads and Internal Navigation, Auditing, Corporations Insurance and Banking, Courts of Justice and Mining and Mineral Resources committees. Throughout his life, Ben devoted his time to many service and community organizations. He was an active member of Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity, served on the University of Mary Washington board of visitors from 1980 to 1985 and as a member of the VA Medical Malpractice Review Panel from 1980 until his death. Ben was active in the Big Brothers of America, serving as a former member of the board of directors. He was a former secretary and treasurer of the 39th Judicial Circuit Bar Association and a former vice president of the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad. An avid sports fan, Ben enjoyed watching football with his family and attending Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles games. Ben is survived by his four sons, Benjamin Halsey Woodbridge III of Midlothian, and his children, Mary and Lauren; John Coult Woodbridge of Las Vegas; Matthew Charles Woodbridge and his wife, Stacey, both of Ashland, and their children, Harrison, Gabrielle and David Randolph Woodbridge of Fredericksburg, Family will receive guests from 4 to 7 p.m. , 16, at Mullins and Thompson Service, Fredericksburg. She was born on 15, 1935 in Pensacola, FL and was the daughter of the late Cheatum and Jesse Lee Kennedy and the wife of Earle B. Woodberry. She was predeceased by a sister, Glenda F. Wood. Beside her husband, she is survived by children Laura (Anthony) Carter, Richmond; Jennifer (James) Barr, Chesapeake; and Timothy (Shannon )Woodberry, New Franklin, OH; Brothers James (Joyce) and Richard (Debria) Kennedy, Pensacola, FL; 7 grandchildren, Justin, Zachery, Jonathan, Benjamin, Samuel, Addie and Kennedy; 1 great-granddaughter, Gemma; and numerous Brothers-in Law, Sisters-in Law, Nieces and Nephews. She was a Registered Nurse by profession and retired after 23 years of service at Tidewater Physicians for Women in Norfolk.
