Obituary: Quiet, reserved and logical are trademark qualities that friends and family might use to describe Donald Mack Williamson Jr. Don was an intuitive person. He was the type of person who could comfortably get lost in his thoughts, someone who had tremendous problem solving abilities. Always conscientious and focused on details, Don was a person who loved to imagine the possibilities of life.

Don was born on 7, 1957 at St. Josephs Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of Donald and Dolly Williamson. He was raised in Baltimore, Florida and Virginia. Don did not have to surround himself with people to be content. He was the type of person who enjoyed being alone rather than be part of a large crowd. He could be content for hours in some activity or be lost in his own imagination.

He had two younger brothers, Steve and Jeff.

In grade school, Don gravitated toward others who shared similar interests and enjoyed academics more than physical activity. He was always curious about what made things work, and he would excel at the things that called more for "brain" power. He delighted in the projects that required planning, exploration and solution.

Don graduated from Faruquire High School in 1975. His favorite class in high school was History.

Although Don had a small group of friends, they were a close knit group and he enjoyed spending time with them. Those who knew him well might describe Don as a good listener who could bring out a type of understanding from those around him that even surprised them. While growing up, some of his best friends were Dwayne Nashwinter, Joel Morgan and Bill Patchet. Later in life, he became best friends with Kevin and Michele Rager.

Don finally found connection and fulfillment when on 18, 1980; he exchanged wedding vows with Deborah Wildman at the Community United Methodist Church of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Deborah was influential in Dons life and brought a dimension of emotion and feelings to a man who mostly lived in his intellect. Don grew, blossomed and became more balanced because of their love and compassion.

Don was a hard worker and a good provider who loved his family. Don was blessed with two daughters, Ashton Danielle and Chelsea Ann. always knew how much their daddy loved them.

Fortunately, Don found a career path where he could use his natural intellect and his critical thinking skills. His primary occupation as a Regional Engineer, of 29 years with the Federal Government, provided opportunity to travel abroad for many years. Don was a dedicated and valued employee and was respected by his colleagues for his ability to grasp and understand difficult tasks.

Don was in the United States Navy from 1977 - 1983. He was assigned to the USS Barney DDG-6 and later the Fleet Training Unit stationed at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base as an instructor. Through his hard work and dedication, he achieved the rank of Electronic Warfare Second Class. He received several awards including a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Battle E. Ribbon, good conduct Award and Navy Expeditionary Medal. Don was an asset to the military system. He had the ability to appreciate the logic necessary to succeed in a regimented life style.

Hobbies were more than fun for Don because he challenged himself to learn the theory behind the actual activity. Knowing how things worked was more incentive than just performing and completing the task. His favorite pursuits were flying, boating, motorcycle riding and electronics.

The people who served with Don recognized his quiet strength and his practical, logical, and discerning abilities. He was awarded numerous honors throughout his life. Some of his most prestigious awards included several outstanding performance awards.

Travel was a way of life for Don and something that he took great pleasure in doing. Don was at his best in the planning stages, as he did research and learned all about the places that he would be visiting or working. Favorite vacations included Egypt, Austria, Scotland, Germany and The San Blas Islands. Don loved St. Croix.

Don especially enjoyed time with Lukka his German Shepherd dog. spent many hours walking in the woods.

Don planned well for retirement so when it finally arrived in 2007, he was well prepared. He worked out many of the details in advance so that he could enjoy the time. His new life involved relocating to Sneads Ferry, North Carolina to enjoy the beach and sailing. In retirement, he found new pleasure in boating, landscaping and riding his motorcycle.

Donald Mack Williamson Jr. passed away on 18, 2009 at New Hanover Regional Medical in Wilmington, North Carolina. He suffered a pulmonary embolism following surgery. He is survived by his wife Deborah W. Williamson, two daughters, Ashton and Chelsea, two brothers, Steve and Jeff . His parents, Don and Dolly Williamson. Services were held at Smith and Williams . Don was laid to rest in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans in Suffolk, Virginia.

Friends and family will remember Donald Williamson, Jr. for his good listening skills, his loyalty and commitment to his family. Those who knew and loved Don will miss his quiet gentleness, his reliability and encouragement. He leaves all those who knew him with many wonderful memories.

Obituary: WILLIAMSON, David Eugene, 75, of Richmond, left us to join the Good Lord on May 18, 2017. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Raymond L. and Ida V. Williamson; and his sisters, Mary Ellen Burley and Viola Mae Hyman. Dave's older brother, Raymond L. Williamson Jr. (Jona Ra) also passed away the same day in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. Family envision both brothers as now whole again and reunited for Eternity, proudly marching with their trumpets down those Golden Streets in Heaven. Dave is survived by his wife, Jean Morris Williamson; son, David E. Williamson Jr.; and daughter, Joanna "Jolie" W. Hathaway. Jolie's son Hayden, Dave's beloved grandson, is pictured here with his Parpy on May 10, just four days before his grandfather's stroke. Dave's sister, Sarah "Sis" Liggan and husband, Joseph "Doodle," survive him as well as his brother-in-law, John Hyman of Maine. He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews. Dave graduated from John Marshall High School ('60), attended U of R for four years, served six years in the National Guard ('64-'70) and graduated from MCV School of Pharmacy ('69). He practiced full time until late '73 when the home building company he co-founded, Dunnavant & Williamson, started booming and demanded his full-time involvement. From '73 through '85 they built over 500 homes. One home he built was for his oldest sister, Mary Ellen and her husband, Walter, on a wooded plot of family land. Dave was born into a musical family the youngest of five. At age six he began playing trumpet and at 13 was leading a band of his peers, the Junior Debonaires. At JMHS he played trumpet in the band. During high school, college and beyond he was a member of several Rock 'N Roll bands, best known as The Grandeurs, The Yeomen and The Dynamic Deadbeats. For many years he was a reserve member of the Shrine Band. Upon his retirement in 2011 he was finally able to join old friends in the JMHS Cadet Alumni Band, who regularly make public performances throughout Richmond. At 21 he joined the Masons, advancing on to Scottish Rite and ACCA Temple for more than 50 years. He was also a Rotary member and sponsored four foreign exchange students. In retirement he enjoyed volunteering with Jean for St. Paul's downtown community outreach and luncheon programs. To keep current in his profession while working full-time in home building, he continued to work most s for an independent drug store. In '86 Dave went back into pharmacy full-time. He continued part-time building, buying and selling real estate. He had a kind and caring way with old and young alike. For this precious final picture May 10, Dave urged Hayden to go get his Uncle David to come take a picture of the two of them together. The next day in a particularly prescient moment Dave giddily thanked David, adding "Now aren't you glad I had you take that picture of Hayden and me yesterday? That one will be for the paper." And so here it is as today's lasting tribute. For 14 years he led family journeys to Schoodic Lake in Maine, twice each summer to the lakeside family cottage that his mother-in-law, Joanna Morris, purchased for her two daughter's families to experience life as she knew it on beautiful Schoodic Lake overlooking Mt. Katahdin. During those three to four weeks spent annually in Maine, Dave loved leisurely paddling the canoe along the shoreline, often with family members or the dog aboard, grilling out, teaching the kids to water ski and driving the boat around the lake. He became licensed to practice pharmacy in Maine and always worked a few days each summer while there with family. There will be a memorial service held at 2 p.m. , 30, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 E. Grace St., followed by a Celebration of Life reception in Scott Hall, featuring a live performance in his memory by the JMHS Cadet Alumni Band. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Stroke Association or the JMHS Cadet Alumni Band. Online condolences can be registered at www.nelsencares.com.
