Obituary: Harold A. Warren, 99, died peacefully on 4, 2015 at 11:30 pm. Mr. Warren worked with the Virginia Department of Highways for over 30 years, and retired as an Assistant Resident Engineer in 1980. His beloved wife of 52 years, Martha Emily Warren, with whom he raised their five children, predeceased him in 1994. Mr. Warren is survived by one daughter (Fleet Lownsbery of Richmond), and four sons (H. William Bill of Weems, VA; S. Nicholas Nick of Richmond; Junius P, of Martinsville, VA; and Randolph J. Randy of Raleigh, NC). He is also survived by nine grandchildren (Christopher, David, Patrick, Anne, Spencer, Lauren, Blair, Whitney, and Jake), and 7 great grandchildren (Walker, Ellie, William, Henry, Meriwether, Sydney, and Taylor). Mr. Warren was a World War II veteran, and served in the Pacific for 2 years as a sergeant within the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He was one of the last surviving members of C263rd Medical Battalion. He was also a life member of the VFW, and regularly met with his friends at Richmond VFW Post 6364 and Richmond Elks Lodge 45. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1980 (then the Department of Highways) after more than 30 years of service. At VDOT, he held numerous positions, and was assigned to Northern Virginia, South Central Virginia, and the Richmond areas. While working in the Richmond district, he and his family lived in Chase City for more than 10 years. He was an active member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, and the VFW in Chase City. During the latter part of his career at VDOT, he served as Assistant Resident Engineer for Chesterfield and Powhatan counties. Mr. Warren was born and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He maintained life-long friendships with his Rocky Mount High School classmates, and attended numerous reunions. He left Rocky Mount in 1941 to serve in the U.S. Army, and married his high school sweetheart from nearby Tarboro, NC, Martha Emily Walker, in 1942. Mr. Warren, the patriarch of his extended family, was truly part of he greatest generation. He loved life, and greatly enjoyed his family and friends. For the last 25 years, he organized an annual family reunion to celebrate his birthday in . Known for his lively sense of humor, he was quick to remind everyone his could be my last birthday. He was proud of all his children, his only regret being that none of them inherited his renowned dancing ability. His family plans to continue the annual reunion in his honor. Services will be held on , 9, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Church of the Holy Comforter, where Mr. Warren was an usher and longtime member. Interment ceremony for family members will follow at the Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Church of the Holy Comforter, 4819 Monument Ave., Richmond VA, 23230. |
