Obituary: Dorothy Marcille Wood 10, 1921 \ 17, 2014 Dorothy Marcille Wood was born in 1921 near Ballinger, Texas, where she was raised to value hard work and to respect the land that sustained her family. Dorothy and her husband, Alvis Marion, worked for 25 years as the foreman of the Hall Ranch in Water Valley, Texas, where they raised their two children David Marion and Joy Louise. During that time, Dorothy was active in their local church and taught beginners school for over a decade. In 1969 the couple had saved enough to realize their dream of owning their own ranching operation, and purchased their own cattle ranch in Hamilton , where they lived for the next 20 years. Dorothy later moved, in retirement, to Wimberley, Texas for 14 years, then finished out her life in Burnet since 2003. In addition to working the land, Dorothy was known county wide as the go-to ranchers wife for all seasonal employees to find a hot meal and a warm bed, her hospitality was known from West Texas to Mexico. An accomplished seamstress, she also ran the cutting department at Pattys of Texas. Dorothy passionately loved gardening, birds and wildlife, and had a knack for cultivating all three wherever she lived. She was a tremendously grateful woman who was often heard saying she felt sorry for the city folk during the Great Depression, for as poor as her family was, they never wanted for anything as they grew all of their own food, and made all of their own clothes. Dorothy was preceded in death by her 3 sisters and 1 brother. She is survived by her daughter, Joy Shirley of Burnet, TX, son and daughter-in-law, Marion and Mark Wood of Burnet, TX, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grand-children and Teddy, the wild and loving Teddy Roosevelt Terrier. The funeral service will be held at the Hoover's Valley Chapel and , 7235 Park Road 4 West, Burnet, Texas, , 26, at 2:00pm. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful and caring staff of Circle of Hands, and Bertram & Rehab. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation in her honor to the Dorothy Marcille Wood Foundation, a non-profit run by her grand-daughter to preserve wildlife habitat in Texas at 3713 Bellaire Drive South, Fort Worth, TX 76109, or to the Hoover's Valley Association at 7235 Park Road 4 West, Burnet, TX 78611. by Clements-Wilcox in Burnet, Texas. Obituary: Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend to many, Dorothy Marie Wood passed away peacefully in her sleep at Arlington Villa Skilled . She was born in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the daughter of Joe Hatcher and Ida Lilian Maxwell Hatcher. She graduated from Birdville High School in 1940. One of our nations Rosie the Riveters during World War II, she lived a life full of love and experiences. Preceding her in death are her husband, Winston John Wood, and her son, Allen Patrick Wood. She is survived by four children: Danny Wood, Dianne Williams, Deborah Martin, and Ray Wood, seventeen grandchildren, and twenty-five great grandchildren as well as one sister, Margie Castleman and sister-in-law Bonnie Hatcher. During her lifetime, Dorothy was known for many things, but one thing that seems to be at the forefront of each persons mind when her name is mentioned is her quilts. She loved making and giving them. She will be missed every single day without her, and her quilts will remind us of the love she shared with each of us. My Grannys Quilts I didn always see her quilts as love. I first saw them as comfort. I saw her hands holding scissors cutting out patterns, then sewing them together. The bright shapes were carefully stacked and pinned. I saw her with needle and thread, hand-quilting each piece. This one with French knots, that one with ties. I slept under her quilts growing up. kept me warm, they protected me. My fingers would absently trace the outlines of the bonnet girls. When I was sad, they offered a sense of comfort. As I grew older, I saw them as art. The bright bold colors she chose challenged life and called your eyes to them. were things of beauty and I proudly showed them to my friends. Art has a special power to make moments stand still. and more often than not, those still captured moments are snapshots that look suspiciously like ordinary life. But when I had my own children and wrapped them in a quilt my Granny sewed, I realized that while her quilts were art and comfort, more than that, her quilts were love. Her quilts, with flowers and birds and girls and boats, were pieces of love sewn carefully together. Sometimes, wrapped in those quilts made with a thousand moments of Grannys life and love, I feel her strength and I think some part of her spirit watches over us as we sleep. My Granny, Dorothy Marie Wood, was the strongest woman Ive ever known. For all of us who had her in our life, she was strong and constant. I remember going to her home to spend the night, sleeping next to her in the king sized bed in her room. I remember talking her ear off until one of us dropped off to sleep. Those slumber parties always involved ice cream and Hawaiian punch and pickles and pimento cheese. She was such a good cook! She would make biscuits and gravy, and pot roast, and mashed potatoes and pies. At Grannys house, people never went hungry. Guests didn use the formal living room or sitting area, everyone gathered in the kitchen, my uncles often sneaking around trying to get samples of food before it was ready, Granny swatting them away. Its really hard for me to imagine a world without my Granny in it. She was a landmark in the lives of everyone she knew. She played 42 and Skip Bo. Her friendships were life-long. When Ive talked to them, I laughed when they told me stories about Granny and Grandaddy - or Dorothy and Johnny. Dorothy and Johnny had the most fun game night. would make us laugh until we cried. Those two were quite a pair! My Grandmama, Margaret Martin, told me stories about Granny making her giggle during choir practice or laugh so hard during their game nights until she couldn catch her breath. Even when my Grandaddy left her side too early, Granny resolutely held fast to her independence and courage. She travelled the world, she embraced adventure, and she reminded us that we were never far from her heart by bringing back gifts from her travels to us. Granny didn write books or stand in front of a crowd, but she shared her wisdom generously by telling stories to us, and to our children and to our childrens children about life: She left us those stories in her quilts. She taught us lessons about breathing deeply. About slowing down and giving up parts of yourself to love. She taught us lessons about life and loss and carrying on. She taught us perseverance. I think theres really only one lesson that life teaches us all, and that is how to say goodbye. Love was more than words to her, it was action. Her love wasn conditional: once she gave it to you, it would always be yours. Hers was a practical art, filled with all the things that made her joyful: friends, laughter, good food, family, novels, dominos, cutting up, sewing, remembering, creating, warming, and feeding us all. Her children grew up to be strong and independent, but full of the same compassion and love she carried. I have a bit of her stubborn streak in me. She would not accept no for an answer when it was something she had her mind set on. She greeted each challenge that came her way with a quiet, resolute strength. She simply put her shoulders back and her chin up and moved forward. She didn crumble in defeat or self-pity when she faced obstacles, she simply kept walking, and as she walked, she left people smiling at a joke she told, or comforted from a shared hug, or warmed by a gift of her cooking continued... |
