Obituary: Harlen Alfred Winter, 81, local sculptor, painter and dog trainer, died 12, 2016, in Austin after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born 24, 1934 in Schulenburg, Texas, where he attended grammar school, graduating from Austin High School when his family moved to Austin. He completed his Bachelors Degree in Art at the University of Texas after two years in the Army and also did his Masters Degree work at the University of Texas at Austin.

While attending the University, Harlen had several part-time jobs. He worked in the University Library, painted murals for various people and became a dance instructor for the Arthur Murray Studio where he met his future wife, Kay, also an instructor. married in 1961 and, after several years with Murrays, they left to manage the Fred Astaire Studio.

Harlen opened his own dance studio/art gallery, Winter Studio, at 12th & Lamar in 1965 showcasing his sculptures during the day and teaching ballroom dancing at night. In his spare time he created bronze, stainless steel, and wood sculptures while building a house on weekends. He was diagnosed with cancer at age 34 necessitating the closure of the studio. defeating the cancer, he continued to create welded and carved wildlife sculptures from his home studio which he sold through art galleries in Houston, San Antonio and Austin. His sculptures are the possessions of former governors of Texas, senators, representatives, a former president of Mexico, and many other distinguished people throughout the country. Some of his later works can be viewed at www.winterartgallery.com.

Harlen got involved with bird dogs as a way to relax from the hours of work that went into each sculpture. He found that working with pointers, training them and showing the dogs ability in field trials where he had many winners was a great antidote to the very exacting carving and welding needed to create his pieces. As his dogs did better and better in trials, he was asked by many dog handlers for advice on training. Over the next few years, Winter Kennels was born as he trained more and more, finally training over thirty five hundred dogs to hunt birds. Always creative and innovative, if he could not find a tool he needed for the job at hand, he made one. If he could not find a remedy for a problem, he invented one. Harlen hated the fact that a large number of dogs were killed by rattlesnakes while hunting, and in 1980 developed his snake avoidance training to keep the dogs safe while hunting. This is something that is now being done all across the country and while not quite the same training he developed, the idea is the same, to keep the dogs safe. He taught his daughter Cory his method of snake avoidance training so that she could continue his mission to protect dogs from snake bites.

Harlen was preceded in death by his daughter, Amara Kay Winter; his parents, Alfred and Anna Winter; and his father-in-law, Fred A. Hubbard. He is survived by his wife of fifty five years, Kay Hubbard Winter; his daughter, Tanya Marie (Cory) Winter; his sisters, Mrs. Joann Dye of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Jeanette Nass of San Antonio; his mother-in-law, Ruth B. Hubbard; his sister-in-law, Linda Hubbard; his brother-in-law, Fred Hubbard and wife, Wyone; ten nieces and nephews; twelve great nieces and nephews and two great, great nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
